Immigration and the City by Eric Fong,Brent Berry Pdf

The majority of immigrants settle in cities when they arrive, and few can deny the dynamic influence migration has on cities. However, a "one-size-fits-all" approach cannot describe the activities and settlement patterns of immigrants in contemporary cities. The communities in which immigrants live and the jobs and businesses where they earn their living have become increasingly diversified. In this insightful book, Eric Fong and Brent Berry describe both contemporary patterns of immigration and the urban context in order to understand the social and economic lives of immigrants in the city. By exploring topics such as residential patterns, community form, and cultural influences, this book provides a broader understanding of how newcomers adapt to city life, while also reshaping its very fabric. This comprehensive and engaging book will be an invaluable text for students and scholars of immigration, race, ethnicity, and urban studies.

Heritage Language Education by Jim Cummins Pdf

Research literature concerning the effects of incorporating the heritage languages of minority students into the regular school curriculum either as subjects or as mediums of instruction is reviewed. Program evaluations from Canada, the United States, and Europe consistently show that the use of a minority language as a medium of instruction for all or part of the school day entails no long-term loss in the development of academic skills in the majority language. There is also evidence that bilingual programs can both encourage minority parent involvement in their children's schooling and facilitate the development of minority students' academic skills. However, this pattern does not invariably emerge in the evaluation data, and further research is required to understand fully the complex interactions that appear to exist between language of instruction and a range of individual, educational, and social factors. Virtually no research data are available on the academic effects of teaching heritage languages as subjects, as opposed to using the languages as a medium of instruction. Also, because most program evaluations focus primarily on academic outcomes, little or no data are available on the impact of bilingual or heritage language programs on the educational system as a whole. Three major policy implications of the research are addressed. (Author/SW)

Palimpsest by Kathryn Koromilas Pdf

This is a book about high ideals and low obsessions, truth and identity, immigration, nationality and race; about what we believe and what happens when belief degenerates into fanaticism. When thirty-year-old philosopher Kally Palamas must unexpectedly leave Coober Pedy, Australia, to attend her estranged fathers funeral in Zelopolis, Greece, all she really wants is to escape her stagnant life and her inability to participate in academia after the death of her daughter. In Zelopolis, Kally begins receiving anonymous installments of The Akindyniad, an account of her fathers life, written by the mute and deformed son of a local shepherd. She discovers that her fathers noble ambition to become a philosopher has devolved into a dark, fanatic plan to restore the life and traditions of the ancient city of Zelopolis.

Intercultural Education by Nektaria Palaiologou Pdf

This edited collection highlights the diversity of perspectives within the broad field of intercultural education, focusing on education in modern multicultural societies, as well as exploring the role of migrant populations as modern citizens. The chapters examine these themes both through historical analysis, tracing the pathway of intercultural education back to ancient Greece, before focussing on modern multicultural societies. It also discusses intercultural learning issues in multicultural contexts, dynamic approaches and practical applications in modern classrooms and the main issues in teacher training in relation to immigrant students. The volume highlights the need to design more effective social and educational policies for immigrant populations, on the basis of respecting, protecting and supporting all social groups, irrelevant of their country of origin, racial or ethnic background, sexual orientation, socio-economic class or religious beliefs. It brings together conceptual and empirical contributions from well-known authors in the field as well as from younger scholars and researchers. The result is a mixture of ideas that will provide food for thought and discussion to an international readership. This book was originally published as a special issue of Intercultural Education.

Origins of Pictures by Klaus Sachs-Hombach,Jörg R. J. Schirra Pdf

Anyone talking about pictures by necessity refers to those using pictures. It is therefore essentially the competence of using pictures that has to be considered. Such competence is not common among higher developed mammals, at least as far as we know today. This fact raises the question whether and to what extent that ability has to be conceived as a strictly anthropological one. In an interdisciplinary approach, the first international conference of the Society for Interdisciplinary Image Science (GiB) titled ›Origins of Pictures‹ has taken a closer look at the role of pictures for the conditio humana. The primary goal of the conference was to present empirical findings of the origins of picture uses, considering in particular research in paleo-anthropology, archeology, cultural anthropology, and developmental psychology. Furthermore, those findings were to be related to philosophical considerations concerning the conditions of the conceptual formation of picture competence.

Birthday Girl with Possum by Brendan Constantine Pdf

Welcome to the party. We're about to unleash the presents. Known for his dreamy abstraction and the emotional ferocity of his work both on the page and on the stage, Constantine has helped to shape the poetry scenes of Southern California. In his second collection, Birthday Girl With Possum, the poet continues to explore the illusion of knowledge and the facts of magic. Utilizing a dynamic blend of classic & colloquial diction, pop culture & historical references, this collection examines the invisible lines between wonder & disappointment, ecstasy & crime, savagery & innocence. No approach to writing (odes, codes, lectures, letters, tests & attendance sheets) is left unexploited as a means to poetry. It is a birthday card from the phenomenal world to our wildest selves.

Performance Now by RoseLee Goldberg Pdf

A landmark publication documenting the development of performance by visual artists since the turn of the twenty-first century This major survey charts the development of live art across six continents since the turn of the twenty- first century, revealing how it has become an increasingly essential vehicle for communicating ideas across the globe in the new millennium. Performance Now offers an unprecedented illustrated survey of this temporal medium which is notoriously hard to document, written by respected curator, art historian, and critic RoseLee Goldberg. Six chapters cover different themes of performance art, such as beauty, global citizenship, and activism, as well as its intersection with other media including film and technology, dance, theater and architecture—interspersed with illustrated profiles of some of the world’s best-known performance artists, including Marina Abramovic, Matthew Barney, and Laurie Simmons. Extended captions assess the importance of specific works in context. At once a wonderful introduction to the medium and a must-have sourcebook for fans, Performance Now is the go-to reference for artists, students, and historians as well as lovers of avant-garde theater and film.
