The promise of land and progeny to the patriarchs-Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob-is a central, recurring feature of the Pentateuch. From the beginning of the story of Abraham to the last moment of Moses's life, this promise forms the guiding theological statement for each narrative. Yet literary and historical inquiries ascribe the promise texts to a variety of sources, layers, and redactions, raising questions about how the promise functioned in its original manifestations and how it can be used to understand the formation of the Pentateuch as a whole. Joel S. Baden reexamines the patriarchal promise in its historical and contemporaneous contexts, evaluating the benefits and drawbacks of both final-form and literary-historical approaches to the promise. An excerpt from the INTRODUCTION - General Character of the Book: The book purports to give the last words, at the approach of death, of each of the twelve patriarchs to his sons. It is evident that the general idea of the book is based upon Jacob's last words to his sons as recorded in Gen. xlix. 1-27. Just as Jacob portrays the character of his sons and declares to them what shall befall them, so in our book each of the patriarchs is represented as describing, in some sense, his own character and as foretelling what shall come to pass among his posterity in the last times. From this latter point of view the book partakes of the character of a prophetic-apocalyptic work. In six of the testaments, those of Reuben, Simeon, Judah, Dan, Naphthali and Joseph, there is a certain correspondence between our book and Gen. xlix. regarding the characters of the patriarchs; as for the remaining six patriarchs no such correspondence exists.

Excerpt: ...Ephron answers: ' The piece of land is worth four hundred shekels of silver," at least four times its value, "what is that betwixt me and thee?"--words exactly repeated to me many times when the price asked was a conscious swindle. Abraham, however, was in no mood then to haggle over the price, and the bargain was concluded. Abraham then weighed to Ephron the silver, four hundred shekels, current money, with the merchant. The text could not have read counted out the silver, for this must have been at least fifteen hundred years before money was counted and not weighed in mercantile transactions. Money values, indeed, were settled at distinct and different periods in history, so that the approximate age of the Book of Job may be inferred by the pieces of gold which made Job rich again after his great disasters, as we will show in a future article on that very ancient book. One item in this real-estate transaction may strike us as singular, and that is that it included the trees that were in the field. With us the trees of course go with the land, but in Palestine an olive grove which takes a century to become remunerative in its yield, and is then worth much more than the ground it covers, would have to be included in the terms of the purchase. When Abraham was first called, God said to him, "I will make thy name great." To the actual fulfilment of these words we can ourselves testify. There is no final resting-place which is held sacred by so many millions of men as the cave of Machpelah at Hebron. There are the graves of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob with Translation of the Inscription: "This is the Grave of the Prophet Jacob.
