The Journal of the Horticultural Society of London, 1851, Vol. 6 (Classic Reprint) by Horticultural Society Of London Pdf

Excerpt from The Journal of the Horticultural Society of London, 1851, Vol. 6 Though, however, the influence of the sex of the parent is not in general exhibited, as in animals, by any outward signs, yet there is often a great difference in the inward constitution of the plants produced by cross impregnation. It is, for instance, by no means a matter of indifference whether Nicotiana rustica be impregnated with the pollen of N, paniculata, or the contrary. In the former case the mule is more fruitful than in the latter, and other similar instances might be adduced. Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, 1908-9, Vol. 34 (Classic Reprint) by F. J. Chittenden Pdf

Excerpt from Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, 1908-9, Vol. 34 Auckland and its environs may truly be said to be a horticulturist's paradise, but the conditions here are also greatly varied, more perhaps in respect to the soil than temperature. We find two distinct classes Of soil, one Of which is heavy clay and forms the true soil Of the district the other is volcanic and overlies the heavy soil in those localities where volcanic action took place. The burnt lava, or scoria, as it is called, overspreads large portions Of country, and in process of time has become decomposed, and forms a soil Of variable texture, sometimes a light puffy material, which is liable to be blown away by the slightest breeze and sometimes a soil of a more adhesive character, while there are soils of all intermediate grades between the two. One peculiar feature of the soil is that, excepting in the volcanic districts, it is free from stone, which makes it much easier to work. Volcanic soil is peculiarly suitable for the growth Of the various Narcissi, being warmer than the Clay, and on this account most Of the successful exhibitors at our spring show grow their flowers on this soil. But though the earliest they are not always the finest, as the flowers grown on the heavier land are, as a rule, when properly cultivated, of much greater substance, and more durable when out. A Daffodil conference has recently been held in Auckland, where the varied experiences Of different growers were exchanged. Among other matters allusion was made to the length Of time which was covered by the different varieties, and it was remarked by some who had seen a schedule Of a Daffodil show in England that nearly all the varieties, both early and late, were exhibited at the one Show, while here there is a difference Of 7 or 8 weeks in the blooming Of the early and late varieties. The Journal of the Horticultural Society of London, 1847, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by Horticultural Society Of London Pdf

Excerpt from The Journal of the Horticultural Society of London, 1847, Vol. 2 It appears that if two stigma-bearing lobes of a triple or even tripartible style are cut Off, the whole germen may be fertilized by the one left. In such cases, therefore, the pollen tubes from one lobe must be able to penetrate all the cells of the germen. In cases such as I have seen, where both natural and hybrid seeds have been produced in one capsule, I cannot state whether the two sorts of pollen acted through the same or dif ferent lobes. I have in no instance succeeded in Obtaining any multiplicate cross by blending the pollen of two or more kinds intimately before their application. Mr. Knight thought he had given at the same time the curl of one cabbage and the red colour of another to a third variety. My invariable failure in such attempts induces me to think his recollection was inaccurate, 1f he meant that he had done so at one fructification. He might easily have Obtained the twofold features by two successive crosses, but I believe not in one generation by simultaneous application of different pollens: for I do not think that two grains even of the same pollen can get effectual access to the foramen of one and the same ovule. I now understand, nearly at least to my own satisfaction, in what manner the pollen of Rhododendron may in the fertilization of the ovules supersede the pollen of Azalea previously applied because I do not believe that they are always fertilized so soon as has been usually supposed. The stimulus may have been given to the germ or outer coat of the seed-vessel, and yet the fertilization may not have reached the ovule, and the operation which produces a living embryo may remain suspended till a change of weather and a moist atmosphere afford a supply of carbon, or whatever is needful thereto; and therefore that pollen which has perfect affinitytto the plant may develop itself effectually at a later period on a change in the state of the atmos phere; but, when the pollen has once reached and stimulated the foramen, further access will be assuredly denied. I have repeatedly observed in dry seasons the pollen of Rhododendron very parched and seemingly deficient, the stigmas dry, and the germens remain ing for weeks nearly stationary after flowering, as if no seed would be produced; but, upon a change of weather inducing moisture, universal fertility of the pods soon became apparent. I suspect that in such cases the fertilization has remained incom plete from want of the food necessary to the elongation of the tubes. If such views have any foundation in truth, it is possible that, in addition to mere water, a supply of the chemical ingre dients which are the food Of plants to the style may facilitate difficult impregnations. It is certainly desirable, where dry pollen is to be tried, to moisten the stigma to which it is about to be applied. Royal Horticultural Society Gardener's Notebook by Royal Horticultural Society Staff Pdf

Good records are as important to gardening as good soil. With detailed notes, a gardener knows what tasks were completed and when, which seed strains grew and which failed to thrive, when the tomatoes were set out, and what works in their particular plot of earth and what doesn't. Proper recordkeeping is much easier -- and far more enjoyable -- with the "The Royal Horticultural Society Gardener's Notebook." This handsome, structured record book includes an undated journal section that allows for flexible recording of day-to-day activities, crop rotation charts for the vegetable patch, space to record dates and yields of crops, graph paper to plan out beds, and even a section for expenses and suppliers. Spiral-bound, with an elastic closure and eight tabbed dividers, and illustrated throughout with color images from the Royal Horticultural Society's Lindley Library, the journal is a thoughtful gift for any gardener.

Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, Vol. 11 (Classic Reprint) by D. Morris Pdf

Excerpt from Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, Vol. 11 Petals. - We may roughly classify the Saxifrages under three groups, according to the colour of the petals: pure white, as in hypnoides and granulata white dotted with small spots of red, as in umbrosa and stellaris; and bright red or bright purple or bright yellow, as in aizoides, Hirculus, and oppositifolia. I should like to ask whether this difference in the colour of the flower is at all correlated with its attractiveness to insects. According to the observations of Hermann Muller, some of the bright-coloured species, in their native homes amongst the mountains, are Visited by an extraordinary number and variety of insects. He gives a catalogue of 126 Species which he has observed to visit the bright yellow flowers of S. Aizoides. Eight of these are Coleoptera (beetles), 85 Diptera (flies), 20 Hymeno ptera (bees), and 13 Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths). To what extent are the flowers of the garden Saxifrages Visited by insects '2 What relation, if any, have the red dots on the white petals of several of the Species to insect fertilisation. The glandulosity of the calyx must interpose a barrier to small wing less insects creeping up into the flower from below.
