Outlaw Woman by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz Pdf

In 1968, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz helped found the Women’s Liberation Movement, part of what has been called the second wave of feminism in the United States. Along with a small group of dedicated women in Boston, she produced the first women’s liberation journal, No More Fun and Games. Dunbar-Ortiz was also an antiwar and anti-racist activist and organizer throughout the 1960s and early 1970s and a fiery, tireless public speaker on issues of patriarchy, capitalism, imperialism, and racism. She worked in Cuba with the Venceremos Brigade and formed associations with other revolutionaries across the spectrum of radical politics, including the Civil Rights Movement, Students for a Democratic Society, the Revolutionary Union, the African National Congress, and the American Indian Movement. Unlike most of those involved in the New Left, Dunbar-Ortiz grew up poor, female, and part–Native American in rural Oklahoma, and she often found herself at odds not only with the ruling class but also with the Left and with the women’s movement. Dunbar-Ortiz’s odyssey from Oklahoma poverty to the urban New Left gives a working-class, feminist perspective on a time and a movement that forever changed American society. In a new afterword, the author reflects on her fast-paced life fifty years ago, in particular as a movement activist and in relationships with men.

Levi Strauss and Co by Lynn Downey Pdf

When Bavarian immigrant Levi Strauss opened his wholesale dry goods warehouse on the San Francisco waterfront in 1853, he likely had no inkling that his business would become one of the world's largest clothing companies. Levi Strauss & Co. started with imported clothing, bedding, and notions to supply the many small stores serving the Gold Rush and the expanding American West. By 1873, he and partner Jacob Davis invented the very first blue jeans, which were soon worn by working men from Los Angeles to Laramie. Strauss parlayed his business acumen into social progress by giving back to his community and embedding a company culture committed to positively impacting society. In this spirit, the Levi Strauss Foundation was created after World War II, formalizing the philanthropic work started by Strauss himself a century earlier. All the while, the company has evolved with successive generations of family owners, expanding product lines to meet the ever-changing needs of consumers around the world.

Selfish Jean by Cate Sweeney Pdf

She wants an affair with Paul, but he is the social worker assessing them to be adoptive parents. And on top of that she thinks the social worker used to be her best friend’s old flame, but decides not to tell either of them. Jeanette and Sam have been together a long time. Unable to have their own children, they have decided to adopt. However, while she is developing an obsession with Paul, the oh-so-serious social worker, Sam is involved in a thing that’s not yet a fling, but heading that way. Is her relationship with Sam in such trouble? Or do they just need some children in their life? Then everything will be all right, won’t it? Juxtaposed with Jeanette’s first person narrative is the story of Levi, a young boy trapped in the care system, who is allowed no say about his life at all. We learn how he was taken away from his mother, along with his little sister, and moved from foster home to foster home, then back to his mother, a decision that ultimately leads to tragedy.
