Applications of High Temperature Superconductors to Electric Power Equipment by Swarn S. Kalsi Pdf

The only one-stop reference to design, analysis, and manufacturing concepts for power devices utilizing HTS. High temperature superconductors (HTS) have been used for building many devices for electric grids worldwide and for large ship propulsion motors for the U.S. Navy. And yet, there has been no single source discussing theory and design issues relating to power applications of HTS—until now. This book provides design and analysis for various devices and includes examples of devices built over the last decade. Starting with a complete overview of HTS, the subsequent chapters are dedicated to specific devices: cooling and thermal insulation systems; rotating AC and DC machines; transformers; fault current limiters; power cables; and Maglev transport. As applicable, each chapter provides a history of the device, principles, configuration, design and design challenges, prototypes, and manufacturing issues, with each ending with a summary of the material covered. The design analysis and design examples provide critical insight for readers to successfully design their own devices. Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) designers, industry and utilities users, universities and defense services research groups, and senior/postgraduate engineering students and instructors will rely on this resource. "HTS technology reduces electric losses and increases the efficiency of power equipment. This book by Swarn Kalsi, a leading expert on the HTS subject, provides a survey of the HTS technology and the design rules, performance analyses, and manufacturing concepts for power application-related devices. It compares conventional and HTS technology approaches for device design and provides significant examples of devices utilizing the HTS technology today. The book is useful for a broad spectrum of professionals worldwide: students, teaching staff, and OEM designers as well as users in industry and electric utilities." —Professor Dr. Rolf Hellinger, Research and Technologies Corporate Technology, Siemens AG

Rules of Thumb in Engineering Practice by Donald R. Woods Pdf

An immense treasure trove containing hundreds of equipment symptoms, arranged so as to allow swift identification and elimination of the causes. These rules of thumb are the result of preserving and structuring the immense knowledge of experienced engineers collected and compiled by the author - an experienced engineer himself - into an invaluable book that helps younger engineers find their way from symptoms to causes. This sourcebook is unrivalled in its depth and breadth of coverage, listing five important aspects for each piece of equipment: * area of application * sizing guidelines * capital cost including difficult-to-find installation factors * principles of good practice, and * good approaches to troubleshooting. Extensive cross-referencing takes into account that some items of equipment are used for many different purposes, and covers not only the most familiar types, but special care has been taken to also include less common ones. Consistent terminology and SI units are used throughout the book, while a detailed index quickly and reliably directs readers, thus aiding engineers in their everyday work at chemical plants: from keywords to solutions in a matter of minutes.

Alien Blues by JR Peer Pdf

Alien Blues This story is about a university professor Josh with unique views about physics and a reputation for refuting any possibility of the existence of alien life. Yet he has an alien encounter where he is given energy technology meant as a gift for the planet. The technology eventually confirms many of his controversial thoughts about physics. But Josh is unable to reconcile his beliefs with what has happened, attributing it to mushrooms and dream sequences. Eventually, he decides to keep their existence a secret and claims the technology came to him in his dreamssince no one would believe it came from aliens anyway. He has an exceptional girlfriend Sarah who helps him and his business grow, but the secret he is keeping from her (the aliens) threatens to break them apart. But despite this, they travel all over the world in style, selling the manufacturing rights to corporations, presidents, and kings and having the time of their lives. However, she is a practical woman and has had her own share of trauma, so when she finally finds out about the aliens, she has no trouble accepting them or accepting Joshs reasons for keeping their existence a secret from her and from the world. In fact, she is enraptured by the aliens as she learns from them the secrets of the universe! There are complications such as Nu, who sees exposing the aliens as a way to become famous, and Jonathan, whom the aliens gave the technology to while having difficulty with Josh, and Dayton, the reporter whose sanity is questioned by conflicting information regarding Josh. Woven through this is another story about converting gasoline vehicles to hydrogen; the second business started by Josh and is the real reason I, the author, wrote this book.

Open Circuits by Windell Oskay,Eric Schlaepfer Pdf

Open Circuits is a photographic exploration of the beautiful design inside everyday electronics. Its stunning cross-section photography unlocks a hidden world full of elegance, subtle complexity, and wonder. Our phones, computers, and appliances are made of hundreds of internal components, each precisely engineered to perform a certain function, but none intended to actually be seen. Through painstakingly executed, vividly detailed cross-section photography, Open Circuits reveals the surprising—and often accidental—beauty hiding inside the electronic components that drive our everyday devices. From resistors to LEDs, USB cables to headphone jacks, stepper motors to nixie tubes, the book’s arresting imagery transforms more than 130 components into delightful works of art. As you visually dissect the components’ insides, you’ll learn about how they work and how they were made. Open Circuits has something for everyone to appreciate, whether you’re a seasoned electrical engineer, an amateur tinkerer, or simply a lover of art and photography.

Robotic Nondestructive Testing Technology by Chunguang Xu Pdf

The content of this book includes a variety of nondestructive testing (NDT) methods, with many introductions to testing and application cases. The book proposes new ultrasonic testing technology for complex workpieces. It is hard for traditional NDT technology to realize the automatic detection of complex curved components, especially the automatic high-precision nondestructive detection of curved-surface components with variable curvature, variable thickness and complex contour. Therefore, the robotic NDT technique as a combination of manipulator technique and NDT technique can further improve the efficiency and accuracy of NDT. Robotic NDT Technique combines the physical principle of nondestructive testing with the flexible motion control of spatial attitude of articulated manipulator. With NDT as the constraint, it controls the motion attitude and azimuth angle of a transmitting and receiving transducer. Thus traditional NDT technique has developed from plane to curved surface, from 2D to many dimensions and from artificiality to intelligence, into a unique and systematic interdisciplinary robotic NDT technique.

China's Green Religion by James Miller Pdf

How can Daoism, China's indigenous religion, give us the aesthetic, ethical, political, and spiritual tools to address the root causes of our ecological crisis and construct a sustainable future? In China's Green Religion, James Miller shows how Daoism orients individuals toward a holistic understanding of religion and nature. Explicitly connecting human flourishing to the thriving of nature, Daoism fosters a "green" subjectivity and agency that transforms what it means to live a flourishing life on earth. Through a groundbreaking reconstruction of Daoist philosophy and religion, Miller argues for four key, green insights: a vision of nature as a subjective power that informs human life; an anthropological idea of the porous body based on a sense of qi flowing through landscapes and human beings; a tradition of knowing founded on the experience of transformative power in specific landscapes and topographies; and an aesthetic and moral sensibility based on an affective sensitivity to how the world pervades the body and the body pervades the world. Environmentalists struggle to raise consciousness for their cause, Miller argues, because their activism relies on a quasi-Christian concept of "saving the earth." Instead, environmentalists should integrate nature and culture more seamlessly, cultivating through a contemporary intellectual vocabulary a compelling vision of how the earth materially and spiritually supports human flourishing.
