Love Lyrics from the Carmina Burana by P. G. Walsh Pdf

Walsh's book should be a vade mecum for anyone who would teach the Carmina Burana on any level and be of considerable value in general to medievalists, comparatists, and those in related disciplines.--New England Classical Newsletter and Journal "Teachers, students, and any reader interested in medieval lyric will find this volume a clear and useful approach to intrinsically interesting texts.--Renaissance Quarterly "The most scholarly and most helpful presentation of a group of these captivating lyrics that has yet appeared in English.--Peter Dronke, University of Cambridge "A superb volume, fully worthy of these famous but often misunderstood poems. P. G. Walsh's unmatched erudition in Latin literature furnishes lucid grammatical explanations, incisive analysis of goliardic literary values and technique, and illuminating references to ancient and medieval parallels. His prose translations make the poems accessible also to those with little or no Latin.--Janet M. Martin, Princeton University

Cana enjoy you smiling and laughing as we're having fun? Cana hold you? Cana console you? Cana love you? Cana woo you to the point that the L word has more meaning? Cana feel your touch that I crave so much? Cana see you daily as the highlight, like needed sunlight in my day? Cana be the one to listen to your heart on a part of each day as it syncs to mine?

Only Love Can Bring You Peace by Simon Joyner (Vocalist) Pdf

Poetry. Music. For twenty-five years, Nebraska songwriter Simon Joyner has crafted haunting, honest songs about the unsettled dust of lovers and strangers. A pioneer of the Omaha music scene, Joyner has earned the praises of Conor Oberst, Beck, Gillian Welch, John Peel, John Darnielle, and more. As Dennis Callaci explains in his heartfelt foreword, Joyner has spent those years and earned those praises for songs about the "sorrow and southbound turns" of "the put- upon, the tortured, builders of arcs." ONLY LOVE CAN BRING YOU PEACE is the first selection of Simon Joyner's lyrics (assembled and edited by Simon and his wife Sara) to appear in book form, showcasing the images and characters of over 15 albums, EPs, and rare releases. ONLY LOVE CAN BRING YOU PEACE also features two interviews with Joyner and full illustrations for each section. Whether you're new to Joyner's work, or you've had his songs stuck in your head since 1992, this book serves as a sturdy companion to what Callaci calls the "the grass, branch and bone of a lifetime."

Arabic-Andalusian Poetry and the Rise of the European Love-Lyric by ‘Abdulwāħid Lu’lu’a Pdf

The idea of this book goes back to the author's college days in the Department of Foreign Languages in Baghdad, where he learned that English poetry developed under the influence of foreign types of poetry, including classical, medieval, and Renaissance. He began to wonder whether Arabic poetry had a role in that development, especially in the love lyric, its main aspect. He researched during a sabbatical year in 1971-1972 in Cambridge, UK, and collected more material during summer vacations and conferences in Europe. By 2010, he had enough material to write this book and a probable second edition. The book covers European poetry in the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, especially the rise of the first poetry in non-Latin, and on non-ecclesiastical subjects as seen in the love lyrics of the troubadours. The 12th-century troubadour love lyric shows a clear influence of Arabic-Andalusian poetry, especially the new and non-European attitude to love and women. This new poetry spread to Sicily, Italy, and was popularized by Dante and his disciples. A further development reached England in the 16th century, best represented by Shakespeare. '

The American Love Lyric After Auschwitz and Hiroshima by B. Estrin Pdf

Citing the massive horrors of the Nazi death camps and the domestic violence behind a woman's suicide, Adrienne Rich challenges a fellow poet: 'would it relieve you to decide/Poetry doesn't make this happen?' In this provocative reassessment of the modern American love lyric, Barbara L. Estrin chronicles the return of three major American poets (Wallace Stevens in the late forties and fifties, Robert Lowell in the Seventies, and Adrienne Rich in the nineties) to the mid-century catastrophes that gave rise to such thorny questions. Through close readings of individual poems (and drawing upon the gender and genre theories of Jean François Lyotard, Judith Butler, Melanie Klien, and Jacques Lacan), Estrin counters the usual presuppositions that the lyric remains sequestered in a-political isolation, and offers a new, revisionist critique of American poetry.

Hispano-Arabic Literature and the Early Provencal Lyrics by J. A. Abu-Haidar Pdf

As the distinctive contribution of Islamic Spain to Arabic literature, the strophic muwashshahand zajal are still viewed by some as a development from putative Romance prototypes. No less than seven theories of origin of the Provençal lyrics have been proffered, foremost among them being the Arabic origins theory. This book lets the strophic muwashshah tell its own tale of a natural development in the context of classical Arabic literature.

Browning's Lyrics by Eleanor Cook Pdf

Browning's lyrics are favourite choices for anthologies but are rarely examined closely. This is the first full-length study of the lyrics, and includes detailed analyses of such well-known poems as Love Among the Ruins, Two in the Campagna, A Serenade at the Villa, A Toccata of Galuppi's, By the Fireside, and James Lee's Wife. Eleanor Cook explores Browning's use of repeated images and themes in the lyrics, examines these patterns in other poems and in his letters, and analyses their growth and change in all his work. She demonstrates how the lyrics may be linked with Browning's other work and shows something of his essential artistic unity. His imaginary is found to be more consistent and complex than is usually assumed. Students of Browning will find this work stimulating and instructive, while lovers of Browning will read it with pure pleasure. The reader will return to many of the poems with a rciher sense of their continuing vitality. In an earlier form this study was awarded the first A.S.P. Woodhouse Prize by the University of Toronto.

Songs of Love and Horror: Collected Lyrics of Will Oldham by Will Oldham Pdf

The definitive collection of lyrics from three decades of songwriting. As a performer, songwriter, and actor, Will Oldham has carved a singular path through the worlds of indie folk and cinema. Now the critically acclaimed, enigmatic artist presents his life’s work: the lyrics to more than two hundred songs spanning the 1980s to the present, each with annotations that impart new meaning to his music. Oldham’s aphoristic meditations—on death, patience, and turning carelessness into a virtue—are, like his lyrics, profound, earthy, and often funny. They reveal flashes of Oldham’s philosophy, the sources and circumstances that inspired his lyrics, and the literary ambition of his songwriting. Separated from their aural form, Oldham’s lyrics become a new kind of poetry—candid, awkward, and wise—with influences as diverse as Rabindranath Tagore and The Mekons. A book that will delight his longtime fans and inspire young songwriters, Songs of Love and Horror reveals an artist who has captured extraordinary poetry in music despite being "a stranger among my own language."
