Makers of Modern Agriculture by William Macdonald Pdf

Excerpt from Makers of Modern Agriculture When it is remembered what a prominent part Agriculture plays in the history of all Nations, it does seem strange that so little is known of the lives of those pioneers who have been foremost in the discovery of fundamental principles, improved methods, and labour-saving machines. Perhaps it is that farmers as a whole are not specially fond of reading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Soil Culture and Modern Farm Methods (Classic Reprint) by Warren E. Taylor Pdf

Excerpt from Soil Culture and Modern Farm Methods Most virgin soils contain a goodly amount of the essential inorganic elements, and in water and air we find the four great basic elements in abundance, namely, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen and carbon. Standing between these two groups of elements, we have the man we call the farmer, who is the active dynamic force intended by the Creator to make available the actual and potential power in nature's storehouse. We find in the soil silica, phosphorus, potash, lime, magnesia, iron, sulphur and other elements which enter into the economy of plant growth. Principles of Agriculture (Classic Reprint) by Robert Patrick Wright Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Agriculture This little work is intended as an introduction to the study of the Principles of Agriculture, for the use of pupils in our Elementary Schools. A series of questions is appended to each Division, which the teacher can use or modify at his discretion. Soils, How to Handle and Improve Them (Classic Reprint) by S. W. Fletcher Pdf

Excerpt from Soils, How to Handle and Improve Them Many of the early books on farmin were written in a technical s They smacke of the lecture room and the rather than of the soil. They were scholarly rather than practical. A spirit of directness and simplicity is be ginnlng to dominate agricultural literature. The modern ty e of farm books is born of actual contact wit the soil and a desire to be of service to the men who are getting a living from the soil. They are democratic; they discuss common things in a plain way. The long and tedious tables of figures in the old books are giving place to crisp summaries. The technical lecture-room phrases are re laced by words in common use on farms. The idea is not to present less science - for nothing is so practical as sound science - but to present science in a simple and practical way. This new spirit is contemporaneous with the farmers' in stitute, the farmer's reading-course, Nature-study, elementary agriculture in the public schools and other efforts to serve the man who tills the soil. It is an expression of a general movement which aims to democracise agricultural teaching. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Future of Our Agriculture (Classic Reprint) by Henry W. Wolff Pdf

Excerpt from The Future of Our Agriculture It has been the author's lot to see a good deal of such modern methods, which are more particularly interesting in that part of the subject which applies to that important social and economic problem interlaced with the agricultural, namely, that of settling more people on the land and so increasing agricultural production, while providing a larger supply of labour, and creating ampler contentment, happiness and prosperity. The subject matter having been systematically divided under distinct heads, some recurrence to the same practices under different aspects has proved inevitable. A Global History of Pre-Modern Warfare by Kaushik Roy Pdf

This book examines the military histories of the regions beyond Western Europe in the pre-modern era. Existing works on global military history mainly focus on the western part of Eurasia after 1500 CE. As regards the ancient period, such works concentrate exclusively on Greece and Rome. So, ‘global’ military history is actually the triumphal story of the West from Classical Greece onwards. This volume focuses not only on the eastern part of Eurasia but also on South America, Africa and Australasia and seeks to explain the history and varied trajectories of warfare in non-Western regions in the pre-modern era. Further, it evaluates whether warfare in non-Western regions should be considered primitive or inferior when compared with Western warfare. The book notes that Western Europe became militarily significant only in the early modern era and argues that the military divergence that occurred during the early modern era is not unique – it had also occurred in the Bronze Age, the Classical era and in the medieval period. This was due to the dynamism and innovativeness of non-Western militaries and the interconnectedness that existed in parts of the Eurasian landmass. Further, those polities which were able to construct a balanced military force by synthesising diverse elements were not only able to survive but also became capable of projecting power across continents. This book will be of much interest to students of military history, strategic studies and world history.

On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire (Classic Reprint) by George Forrest Browne Pdf

Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses.
