American Missionaries, Christian Oyatoi, and Japan, 1859-73 by Hamish Ion Pdf

Japan closed its doors to foreigners for over two hundred years because of religious and political instability caused by Christianity. By 1859, foreign residents were once again living in treaty ports in Japan, but edicts banning Christianity remained enforced until 1873. Drawing on an impressive array of English and Japanese sources, Ion investigates a crucial era in the history of Japanese-American relations the formation of Protestant missions. He reveals that the transmission of values and beliefs was not a simple matter of acceptance or rejection: missionaries and Christian laymen persisted in the face of open hostility and served as important liaisons between East and West.

The Works of John Knox, Volume 5: On Predestination and Other Writings by John Knox Pdf

John Knox (1514-1572) was more a reformer of the Scottish Kirk than he was a systematic theologian, as his collected works will attest. Knox had a profound influence upon theological and ecclesiological developments in Scotland both purely by the force of his personality and by the role he played in shaping the Scots Confession and the Book of Common Order. Knox was an ordained priest and served as a tutor prior to his conversion to Protestantism. Volumes One and Two: Knox's famous 'History of the Reformation in Scotland'. Apologetics as much as history, 'History of the Reformation in Scotland' was immediately seized and suppressed when it initially appeared, yet it has remained available in various editions for over 400 years. Volume Three: 'Earliest Writings', 1548-1554 Volume Four: 'Writings from Frankfurt and Geneva'. These writings in exile include Knox's famous 'First Blast of the Trumpet against the Monstrous Regiment of Women', his violent diatribe against Mary of Guise. Volume Five: 'On Predestination' and other writings. 'On Predestination, in Answer to the Cavillations by an Anabaptist' is Knox's longest theological work and presents a position of rigid predestinationism. Volume Six: Letters, Prayer, and other shorter writings with a sketch of his life.

Early English Composers and the Credo by Wendy J Porter Pdf

This book develops an innovative approach for understanding the relationship between music and words in the works of five major composers of the English Renaissance: John Taverner, Christopher Tye, John Sheppard, Thomas Tallis, and William Byrd. Focusing on these composers’ settings of the Latin Credo, the author shows how musical and linguistic emphasis can be used to understand the composers’ theological interpretations of the text. By combining markedness theory with style analysis, this study demonstrates that the composers used their musical skills to not only create beautiful music but also raise certain elements of the text to the foreground of perception and relegate others to supporting roles, inviting listeners to experience the familiar words of the liturgy in unique ways. Providing new insights into the changing musical and religious world of the sixteenth century, this book is relevant to anyone researching music or religion in early modern England, while offering a flexible and widely adaptable tool for the analysis of musical-textual relationships.

Shakespeare Studies by Susan Zimmerman,Garrett A. Sullivan Pdf

Shakespeare Studies is an international volume published every year in hard cover that contains essays and studies by scholars and cultural historians from both hemispheres. Although the journal maintains a focus on the theatrical milieu of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, it is also concerned with Britain's intellectual and cultural connections to the continent, its sociopolitical history, and its place in the emerging globalism of the period. The journal also includes substantial reviews of significant publications dealing with these issues, as well as theoretical studies relevant to scholars of early modern culture. This issue features another Forum, entitled "The Universities and the Theater." Organized and introduced by John H. Astington, the Forum includes commentary considering the relationship between theater in the universities and the Renaissance public stage. Volume XXXVII also features articles on the Fortune contract, and Titus Andronicus and the New World, as well as a review article on women and the early modern stage. There are nineteen reviews in this volume on such varying topics as angels in the early modern world, Shakespeare and the nature of love, and Shakespeare in French theory. Susan Zimmerman is Professor of English at Queens College, City University of New York. Garrett Sullivan is Professor of English at Pennsylvania State University.

Carmel: Interpreting A Great Tradition by Ruth Burrows OCD Pdf

One of the outstanding Carmelite authors of today has now written on the vision and aspirations of the great foundress of her order,St Teresa of Avila. The key to that vision was passion - not some state of heightened religious emotion, but an all-engrossing preoccupation with God. But, as Ruth Burrows points out, what all too often happens in practice is that the day-to-day lifestyle becomes adapted to non-passion: she argues, passionately, that faithful observance - the horarium, the 'detachment from created things' obedience, the relationship between sisters - provides an almost perfect situation for receiving a very great love of God, and that the structure must not be adapted to a lesser love. This, perhaps her most important book to date, is written primarily for fellow members of her own Order. But this particularly, and the detail and clarity with which she expresses it, makes Carmel a book of profound interest to all contemplatives, to priests and religious with more active apostolates, and to laypeople - in a word, to all Christians who see the 'passionately pursued' contemplative life not only as a core vocation in the Church, but as a source of inspiration for their own spiritual lives.

History of the Christian Church & Ecclesiastical History by Philip Schaff,Eusebius Pdf

"History of the Christian Church" is an eight volume account of Christian history written by Philip Schaff. In this great work Schaff covers the history of Christianity from the time of the apostles to the Reformation period. "Ecclesiastical History" of Eusebius, the bishop of Caesarea, was a 4th-century pioneer work giving a chronological account of the development of Early Christianity from the 1st century to the 4th century. The result was the first full-length historical narrative written from a Christian point of view. It was written in Koine Greek, and survives also in Latin, Syriac and Armenian manuscripts.
