Honey in Traditional and Modern Medicine by Laïd Boukraâ Pdf

The use of honey can be traced back to the Stone Age. Evidence can be found for its nutritional and medicinal use beginning with prehistoric and ancient civilizations. Currently, there is a resurgence of scientific interest in natural medicinal products, such as honey, by researchers, the medical community, and even the general public. Honey in Traditional and Modern Medicine provides a detailed compendium on the medical uses of honey, presenting its enormous potential and its limitations. The book covers honey’s ethnomedicinal uses, chemical composition, and physical properties. It discusses the healing properties of honey, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It also examines the botanical origin of honey, a critical factor in relation to its medicinal use, along with the complex subject of the varying composition of honey. Honey’s antibacterial qualities and other attributes are described in a chapter dedicated to Leptospermum, or Manuka honey, a unique honey with potential for novel therapeutic applications. Chapters explore a variety of medicinal uses for honey, including its healing properties and use in burn and wound management. They review honey’s beneficial effects on medical conditions, such as gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular diseases, diabetic ulcers, and cancers as well as in pediatrics and animal health and wellness. The book also examines honey-based formulations, modern methods for chemical analysis of honey, and the history and reality of "mad honey." The final chapters cover honey in the food industry, as a nutrient, and for culinary use.

It was an ingredient in medicinal compounds and cures made by Egyptian physicians 5,000 years ago, and its medical use has been found in other ancient practices from traditional Chinese medicine and Indian Ayurveda to Mayan shamanism. In the past ten years there has been an explosion in scientific research on honey as medicine at universities, research centers, and medical clinics around the world. Presenting the very latest scientific and medical evidence of the healing properties of honey--including that from the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand--Nathaniel Altman explores the broad spectrum of medicinal uses of honey and how these remedies can be used safely at home as well as by licensed health practitioners. He includes an extensive selection of honey-based recipes that can be used to treat common health problems--from burns, conjuctivitis, and ulcers to tooth decay, diabetes, and cystic fibrosis. He explains the physiological reasons why honey is so effective in treating antibiotic-resistant diseases with no side effects and honey’s ability to kill “superbugs” like E. coli and MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). Drawing on centuries of material from historical and folk medicine sources, he also examines the sacred role of bees from ancient Egypt onward and the modern problem of Colony Collapse Disorder, including methods for protecting our precious hives.

Manuka by Cliff Van Eaton Pdf

New Zealand's manuka honey is known around the world. It fetches extremely high prices, and beekeepers do everything in their power to produce as much of it as they can. Wound dressings containing manuka honey are used in leading hospitals, and it has saved the lives of patients infected with disease-causing bacteria that are resistant to standard antibiotic drugs. In so doing, it has forced the medical profession to re-think its position on the therapeutic properties of natural products. This book chronicles the remarkable 'rags-to-riches' story of manuka honey, as seen through the eyes of a beekeeping specialist who watched it unfold from the very beginning. It's a great science tale of an unassuming university lecturer and his hardworking lab assistant who found something totally unexpected in a product everyone had written off. And it's an entertaining account of the way that simple discovery magically caught the international media's attention, helping some enterprising New Zealanders with a love of bees to develop manuka honey-based products and take them to the rest of the world. The book describes the remarkable antibacterial and therapeutic properties of manuka and the range of uses it has.

Honey and Healing by PROFESSOR PAMELA. MUNN,Jones Richard Pdf

This book was derived from papers given at the meeting organised by the International Bee Research Association entitled: "Honey and healing: from the hive to the hospital" which was held at the University of Cardiff on 7 October 2000. The programme for the meeting stated: "Man has known the curative properties of honey from the earliest times. We may have forgotten, in latter years, just what medicinal benefits the golden harvest of the hive can bring. Perhaps with bacteria ever more resistant to antibiotics and viruses that seemingly defeat the medical world it is time to look once again to one of nature's own medicines that has a scientifically proven track record." The book was originally published in 2001, but has been out of print for a number of years. Sadly, Peter Molan, who contributed two chapters, died in 2015. In his obituary published in Bee World, his colleague Prof. Rose Cooper wrote: "I met Peter Molan by chance late in 1996 when I was collecting wound swabs from outpatients attending the Wound Healing Research Unit's clinic at the University Hospital of Wales. He was visiting his mother in Cardiff (where he was born and brought up) and had come to the hospital to promote the use of manuka honey in treating wounds. We chatted for about an hour and he offered to send me some samples of honey when he returned to New Zealand. I did my first experiments on the antibacterial activity of honey in 1997, and it marked the start of a wonderful collaboration that changed the course of my professional life." It is thus fitting that we republish this popular book.

Honey and Health by Bodog Felix Beck Pdf

Excerpt from Honey and Health: A Nutrimental, Medicinal and Historical Commentary For someone who knows the extraordinary merits of honey, it is difficult to comprehend the reason why this salutary substance has suffered such a setback. For sixty centuries, throughout his toric ages and undoubtedly even in prehistoric times, honey was man's only sweetener and his most favored food, delicacy and medicine. But Nature's own sweet was displaced by one of man's inferior, nay, objectionable products. Upon the intrusion of re fined sugars, honey declined in use and now, instead of being an important household necessity, it has become an article of luxury. Civilization and even science often post only dim lights as warn ing signals before deep chasms; on the other hand, they neglect to mark with road - signs abandoned paths which lead to a better life. The culpable disregard of honey is a grave and lamentable error of the present generation and a sad reflection on its intelligence. It is almost unbelievable that such an ideal and nourishing food, with its delightful bouquet, is almost entirely missing from our tables. If honey were ever rehabilitated, man would wonder how he could ever have gotten along without it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
