The scholarly researches, the cogent reasoning, the fervent pleading of the German authoress can not but arouse the attention and awaken a responsive zeal. In my attempt to bring this work of intrinsic merit before the English reading public I have endeavored to convey the ideas of the writer rather than to give a literal translation. Some chapters of this work deal largely with the various occupations of women, and there I met with a peculiar difficulty, originating in the fact that in contradistinction from other modern tongues the English language in some cases does not possess, in other cases does not admit the use of, feminine endings in the designation of female practitioners of the different professions. Excerpt from The Jewish Woman in America The dreadful tribunal spared neither age nor sex, and so we find old women, like Dona Catalina Enriquez of Vera Cruz, con demmed as Jewish heretics, at the age of eighty. She died in her cell September 25, 1644. At the trial of Gabriel of Grenada, which took place in the City of Mexico in 1642, no less than thirty-four Jewish women are mentioned; several of these are described as having died in prison, others as tortured by the Inquisition. As several of the fam ily names subsequently appear in the his tory of our thirteen colonies, it may not be amiss to mention a few of the names of such victims: Dona Blanca Mendes de Rivera, Beatrice Henriquez, Clara de Sylva, Maria Gomez, Isabel Nunez and others. Excerpt from Prayer in Bible and Talmud The following pages, with but few alterations, were written by Frau Nahida Remy, a Christian, who has made a study of Judaism, even to a thorough knowledge of the Hebrew language. She is also the author of "Culturstudien über das Judenthum" (which has now absorbed the present work) and "Das Jüdische Weib." In both productions the greatest sympathy with our people is shown. I consider that we are under an everlasting obligation to this noble-minded woman. Since reading the original, I have been anxious that "Das Gebet in Bibel and Talmud" should circulate among the English-speaking public. Hence my translation. In 1895 Frau Nahida Remy adopted the Jewish faith and became the wife of the renowned Prof. Moritz Lazarus. As Nahida Ruth Lazarus - she wrote "Ich Suchte Dich," (1898) an autobiography of peculiar interest to Jews.
