Since my return many readers of those articles have thanked me for the information that they contained and for the pleasure they enjoyed in reading them, and expressed the hope that I might expand them and publish them in book form. Very few travelers take notes when on a vacation as it seems a task to do so, but the information and pleasure one derives from them by having them at hand for future reference are worth many times the cost of making them. The writer's object in traveling has been primarily to get knowledge at first-hand and incidentally for pleasure. In selecting the material for this small book from the more than one thousand pages of original notes, the writer has had but one object in view, namely, the desire to furnish the reader with interesting information without making the chapters too long and tedious.
