Off-Track and Online by Holly Kruse Pdf

How horse racing's pioneering use of communication and information networks helped shape the modern media, information, and leisure environment. The horse racing industry has been a pioneer in interactive media, information networks, and their deployment. The race track and the off-track betting parlor offer interactive media environments that reconfigure the relationships among private and public space and presence and copresence. In this book, Holly Kruse explores how horse racing has used media over the last several decades, arguing that examining the history and context of horse racing and gambling gives us a clearer understanding of the development of data networks, media complexes, public entertainment, and media publics. Kruse describes an enormous industry that depends on global information and communication flows made possible by a network linking racetracks, homes, off-track betting, farms, and auction sites. Racetrack architecture now allows for the presence of screens, most showing races from other locations. Online betting sites enable bettors to wager from home. Off-track betting facilities collect wagers on races from all over the country. Odds are set interactively through the pari-mutuel market system. Kruse considers the uses of public space, and its redefinition by public screens; the effect of interactive media on the racing industry, including networked, in-home betting; the “technopanic” over online poker and the popularity of in-home pari-mutuel wagering; and the use of social media by racing fans to share information and creative work with no financial payoff.

Understanding Social Action, Promoting Human Rights by Ryan Goodman,Derek Jinks,Andrew K. Woods Pdf

In Understanding Social Action, Promoting Human Rights, editors Ryan Goodman, Derek Jinks, and Andrew K. Woods bring together a stellar group of contributors from across the social sciences to apply a broad yet conceptually unified array of advanced social science research concepts to the study of human rights and human rights law. The book focus on three key methodological and substantive areas: actors, or social and political perspectives, including behavioral economics; communication, covering linguistics, media studies, and social entrepreneurship; and groups, via organizational theory, political economy, social movements, and complexity theory. Drag Me Out Like a Lady by Jentri Anders Pdf

She was arrested in the Berkeley Free Speech Movement. She was at the Be-In when Timothy Leary told us to drop out. She was in the battle of People's Park when James Rector was killed. She was tear-gassed on campus at UC Berkeley. She was at Altamont when a Hell's Angel murdered a concertgoer. Now she has written her autobiography, describing her unusual trajectory through an unusual era. In the spirit of Howard Zinn, Jentri Anders presents her life as an activist and anthropologist. A Southerner with deep roots in Georgia and Arkansas, she went to high school in Groveland, Florida, one of the most notorious locations in black history. Expelled from both a Georgia Bible college and Florida State University for political reasons, she moved to California, participated in the antiwar movement there, then was sexually and politically harrassed out of UC Berkeley. She dropped out of mainstream culture to become a back-to-the-land hippie in what is now called the Emerald Triangle in Humboldt County, California, then dropped back in, wrote the definitive ethnography of back-to-the-land hippies, and was featured in the Academy Award-nominated documentary film, Berkeley in the Sixties. A fascinating writer, Anders is also a scholar. Drag Me Out Like a Lady is thoroughly researched, indexed, referenced, and documented, including historical material from her personal files. Cultural historians, anthropologists, activists, feminists, literate hippies, as well as people who just like weird stories, will all love this book

From Hitler Youth to American Soldier by Herb Flemming Pdf

Born in a small fishing village in East Prussia, Germany, in 1933, Herb Flemming grew up under Hitler regime, the son of devout Christian parents, third in a family of nine children. Forced to join the Hitler Youth, Herb childhood was a contrast between the good at home and the evil all around him. From Gestapo shooting to Tom Sawyer-like boyhood adventures, from fleeing as a refugee to immigrating to the United States, and finally returning to Germany as a soldier in the US Army, Herb learned of God’s love and the power of prayer. After returning to America at the end of his military service, Herb and his wife, Frieda, moved to New York City, where they started a family. The Flemmings now live in West Virginia and enjoy visiting with their grandchildren whenever possible. Herb has recently returned to his former home in the small village of Rothenen, in East Prussia, now a part of Russia, only to find that not a single street or building remains. Herb is grateful to God for the miracle of His deliverance and protection, and his life is still today a powerful testimony that God answers prayer.
