Rough Ride on a High Horse by Jessie Irene Fernandes Pdf

Sixty-three year old Minty Whitman has been looking forward to a summer enjoying the freedom of her friendship with privileges with the brother of her deceased husband. Instead, her plans are derailed by a series of calamities: her lovers unexpected proposal, a threat to the ancestral home, her married daughters enthusiasm for the tango, the disappearance of two LaMancha goats and the recurring appearance of her philandering husbands ghost. Within a society tainted by the remnants of antebellum tradition in small town Virginia, Minty copes with the peculiar ways in which people deal with fractious relationships. Her efforts to solve all their problems range from heroic to hilarious, but lead to unintended consequences which alter the course of her life.

Figurative Language by Dmitrij Dobrovol'skij,Elisabeth Piirainen Pdf

The book develops a Theory of the Figurative Lexicon. Units of the figurative lexicon (conventional figurative units, CFUs for short) differ from all other elements of the language in two points: Firstly, they are conventionalized. That is, they are elements of the mental lexicon – in contrast to freely created figurative expressions. Secondly, they consist of two conceptual levels: they can be interpreted at the level of their literal reading and at the level of their figurative meaning – which both can be activated simultaneously. New insights into the Theory of Figurative Lexicon relate, on the one hand, to the metaphor theory. Over time, it became increasingly clear that the Conceptual Metaphor Theory in the sense of Lakoff can only partly explain the conventional figurativeness. On the other hand, it became clear that “intertextuality” plays a far greater role in the CFUs of Western cultures than previously assumed. The book’s main target audience will be linguists, researchers in phraseology, paremiology and metaphor, and cultural studies. The data and explanations of the idioms will provide a welcome textbook in courses on linguistics, culture history, phraseology research and phraseodidactics.

A Dictionary of Anglo-American Proverbs & Proverbial Phrases Found in Literary Sources of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries is a unique collection of proverbial language found in literary contexts. It includes proverbial materials from a multitude of plays, (auto)biographies of well-known actors like Britain's Laurence Olivier, songs by William S. Gilbert or Lorenz Hart, and American crime stories by Leslie Charteris. Other authors represented in the dictionary are Horatio Alger, Margery Allingham, Samuel Beckett, Lewis Carroll, Raymond Chandler, Benjamin Disraeli, Edward Eggleston, Hamlin Garland, Graham Greene, Thomas C. Haliburton, Bret Harte, Aldous Huxley, Sinclair Lewis, Jack London, George Orwell, Eden Phillpotts, John B. Priestley, Carl Sandburg, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Jesse Stuart, Oscar Wilde, and more. Many lesser-known dramatists, songwriters, and novelists are included as well, making the contextualized texts to a considerable degree representative of the proverbial language of the past two centuries. While the collection contains a proverbial treasure trove for paremiographers and paremiologists alike, it also presents general readers interested in folkloric, linguistic, cultural, and historical phenomena with an accessible and enjoyable selection of proverbs and proverbial phrases.

Could It Be? by Joseph C. Way Pdf

Could It Be? focuses on twelve biblical passages. Most of them have been denigrated or disregarded, either by those who want nothing to do with organized religion or by others who claim to be genuinely Christian. The author reclaims those discarded gems, proclaims those stories as relevent, countermands erroneous interpretations and counteracts the results of misinformation about their meaning and purpose. The book is designed to stir the status quo and begins the stirring process by reexamining old passages from a new approad. Its author believes the only road leading to intellectual and spriritual growth runs through the crowded and musty city of "Old Ideas" and winds through the treacherous valley of "New Possibilities." That is the basic outline for every chapter in this book. Each chapter identifies problematical interpretations of some ingrained religious ideas and offers new possibilities that enrich Christian living. Biblical requirements considered impossible to follow are interpreted as very doable. The uppermost question for each reader to keep in mind is, "Could it be this passage is very different than I originally thought?" Throughout the book, the author repeatedly affirms God is at work in common places, events and things. Biblical stories about personal deliverance and radical change were frequently facilitated by something quite ordinary. What we called a miracle was often an ordinary act for God. If that is how God works, he regularly offers "miracles" to everyone, not just to special people in special situations. These passages about miracles, admonitions and probing questions are prototypes of the human condition, making them extremely relevant because they are "OUR STORY" too.

Victorian Animal Dreams by Deborah Denenholz Morse,Martin A. Danahay Pdf

The Victorian period witnessed the beginning of a debate on the status of animals that continues today. This volume explicitly acknowledges the way twenty-first-century deliberations about animal rights and the fact of past and prospective animal extinction haunt the discussion of the Victorians' obsession with animals. Combining close attention to historical detail with a sophisticated analytical framework, the contributors examine the various forms of human dominion over animals, including imaginative possession of animals in the realms of fiction, performance, and the visual arts, as well as physical control as manifest in hunting, killing, vivisection and zookeeping. The diverse range of topics, analyzed from a contemporary perspective, makes the volume a significant contribution to Victorian studies. The conclusion by Harriet Ritvo, the pre-eminent authority in the field of Victorian/animal studies, provides valuable insight into the burgeoning field of animal studies and points toward future studies of animals in the Victorian period.
