As the follow-up to the Bram Stoker Award winning collection Soft Apocalypses, it contains plenty of darkly imaginative tales. Many of these stories, including the title piece, are heavily influenced by the work of H.P. Lovecraft and The King in Yellow mythos. They whisper madly among each other creating weird echoes. Born in Toronto, he holds degrees in mining and geology, and worked as an engineer, university professor, and textbook author before he started writing fiction. He began his career as a novelist by writing young adult books, starting with The Odd-Lot Boys and the Tree-Fort War (1976). He wrote his last young adult novel, Murder in the Market, in 1985, by which time he had begun writing for adults, starting with the four-novel Richard Hagen series. In 1992, Janes published Mayhem, the first in the long-running St-Cyr and Kohler series for which he is best known. These police procedurals set in Nazi-occupied France have been praised for the author’s attention to historical detail, as well as their swift-moving plots. Englishman Frederick William Burbidge (1847-1905) was a legendary and intrepid collector of tropical orchids, traveling in Borneo, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Australia, and the Fiji Islands in search of specimens. His experience trying to cultivate these tropical plants in more temperate regions led him to publish "Cool Orchids" in 1874, which focused on successful orchid growing in cooler climates. Burbidge, who worked for Victorian orchid distributor James Veitch and Sons, was named Curator of the Trinity College Botanic Gardens at Dublin, Ireland in 1879.
