A Southern Story by Sterling Vinson Pdf

This book is an examination of a southern white family's relations with people of color in the United States from about 1650 to the present. Part autobiography, part social history, we were slaveowners, Confederate soldiers, Klansmen, and responsible for at least one lynching. During the last two generations we befriended Nisei during World War II, and since then have been increasingly active in Civil Rights in the South and Southwest (e.g., the Sanctuary Movement and Humane Borders). The book can therefore be viewed as an account of sin and redemption, especially since the author has moved from a history of alcoholism and violence to membership in the Presbyterian Church, US.

First Families of Alexander County, North Carolina by William White Pdf

Alexander County was formed in 1847 from Iredell, Caldwell and Wilkes Counties. This book provides family sketches and genealogical information on the first families to settle in Alexander County, NC. The earliest settlers date back to the early 1700s. William E. White in an unpublished manuscript dated 1926 documented many of the early settlers. This book continues his work and corrects / updates it. It also includes an index which was not included in White's manuscript and organizes his notes into a more consistent narrative. Throughout White's work there are references to other material and appendices which he evidently intended to include in the final book. Generally these materials have not been found, but where we have looked for the particular item, we will reference it in this edition.

The Source by Loretto Dennis Szucs,Sandra Hargreaves Luebking Pdf

Genealogists and other historical researchers have valued the first two editions of this work, often referred to as the genealogist's bible."" The new edition continues that tradition. Intended as a handbook and a guide to selecting, locating, and using appropriate primary and secondary resources, The Source also functions as an instructional tool for novice genealogists and a refresher course for experienced researchers. More than 30 experts in this field--genealogists, historians, librarians, and archivists--prepared the 20 signed chapters, which are well written, easy to read, and include many helpful hints for getting the most out of whatever information is acquired. Each chapter ends with an extensive bibliography and is further enriched by tables, black-and-white illustrations, and examples of documents. Eight appendixes include the expected contact information for groups and institutions that persons studying genealogy and history need to find. ""

North Carolina Musicians by Daniel Coston Pdf

Daniel Coston's career in photography began accidentally. A magazine writer, he began taking photographs for his stories when the regular photographer was unavailable, and his contacts as a writer led him to invitations to take pictures of local musicians. His life-long fascination with the sounds of North Carolina music drew him to begin documenting the musicians in his adopted state. This book is a collection of the best photographs and the stories behind them from the past sixteen years. From Doc Watson to Ben Folds, musicians of all genres are represented here in the studio, in concert, at festivals, and at home. Coston also interviewed members of the Avett Brothers, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Squirrel Nut Zippers and many more.
