The Sunday Story Club by Kerry Cue,Doris Brett Pdf

'I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cry. But the salons have given me the opportunity to look back and think about my life...I don't talk to anyone about these feelings outside of the salon.' We all carry stories within us - wrenching, redemptive, extraordinary, and laced with unexpected and hard-won wisdom. These are the real-life stories that a group of women tell each other when they gather for a deep and structured conversation - once a month in a suburban living room - about the things that really matter. They discover that life can be a heartbeat away from chaos; that bad things happen to good people; that good people do outrageous things; that the desire for transformation is enduringly human. A mother tells of the heartbreaking loss of control when her daughter develops anorexia. A sister reveals the high psychological cost of being hated by a sibling over the course of her life. Husbands leave wives; wives take lovers; friendships shatter; wrong choices turn out to be right ones; agency is lost and re-claimed. Profound, layered and clear-sighted, this collection of real-life stories reveals the emotional untidiness that lies below the shiny surface of modern life and reminds us of the power of real conversation to enlighten, heal and transform.

My Gal Sunday by Mary Higgins Clark Pdf

Topping her bestselling success with Alvirah and Willy, in The Lottery Winner,America's Queen of Suspense introduces a new sleuthing couple , Henry and Sunday, an ex-president and his young congresswoman bride. Henry Parker Britland IV is wealthy and worldly -- a beloved former president who, still youthful, is enjoying early retirement. His new wife, Sunday, is beautiful, smart and seventeen years younger than he, and has just been elected to Congress in a stunning upset victory that has made her the darling of the media. Henry and Sunday make a formidable team of sleuths -- and never more so than when they set out to solve crimes occurring among their friends in political high society. When Henry's former secretary of state is indicted for the murder of his mistress, Henry and Sunday suspect he is taking the fall for a crime of passion he did not commit. With cases ranging from a crime on the presidential yacht to a kidnapping that brings Henry back to the White House as he races against time to unravel the plot, there is never a dull moment for the ex-president and his bride -- or the reader. With her wit and gift for characterization, the creator of the popular Alvirah and Willy stories brings us another marvelously endearing sleuthing duo, destined to return again and again

Steward of Stories by JoAnn Post Pdf

Drawn from three decades of parish ministry experience, Steward of Stories opens the delightfully complex and nuanced world of the congregation to a wider audience beyond, but including, local parish pastors. Each chapter brings together dramatically different stories about ordinary ministry situations organized around a core thematic connection, including pastoral incidents focused on topics like "Paying Attention," "Marry Me," and "Time to Go." Linking these together is the interwoven wisdom of an experienced pastor who encourages readers to consider the theological and ministry challenges at stake for us all. Clearly written and highly accessible, these vignettes are meant for lay and clergy audiences alike, especially as they come together in their mutual life in Christian community. These are stories about real people drawn from actual events--accounts that will prompt thoughtful contemplation and conversation among the faithful about saints and sinners in everyday congregations and situations. Each chapter concludes with helpful questions for use in both educational settings and individual study. This book is ideal for personal reflection or group discussion and will stimulate a richer awareness of the challenges and opportunities we all face in the ministries we share.

The Olden Time: Stories for Betty by Elizabeth Hawley Pdf

This project is based on the reminiscences of Elizabeth Hawley Bowen Everett (1857-1940). She originally compiled these stories, records, and reflections about her life and her family in response to curiosity expressed by her grand-daughter, Betty Bowen Hanes. Her collection is called, The Olden Time or Stories for Betty. As we immersed ourselves in this family’s history, we became convinced that the experiences of its various members represented those of countless Americans. Their participation in this country’s struggle for independence, the western migration, the establishment of towns on the prairie, in school teaching from Maine to Mississippi and Nebraska, make this story significant beyond its interest to the family’s descendents. In consequence, we made the decision to annotate the collection in an effort to aid the modern reader with obscure references and to provide some historical background. We have presented Elizabeth Hawley’s own work with only the slightest editing and occasional rearrangement, and we have clearly identified our additions as footnotes, by brackets or a change in typeface. Several observations should be mentioned here. The influence of New England culture on the prairie society is marked. The interest in education is attested by both the number of schools established in these small towns and the number of students who enrolled. Women and girls attended school as well as boys and young men. Women taught, even in male preparatory schools, and ran their own schools. Religion, in the form of protestant denominations, was a strong influence and along with it temperance societies. Little distinction was made among the various protestant traditions as long as the preaching was “faithful” and “effective,” for the church of one’s family might well be unrepresented in a new town. Customs of dress and manners were transported from New England along with the settlers. Land divisions took similar forms as did the governing bodies of townships. As a family history, this is an odyssey of school teachers. Their devotion to education is represented first in Maine, by The Reverend Reuben Nason’s Gorham Academy, now located on the campus of the University of Southern Maine, and finally, at the end of the western journey, by the presence of the family home facing the campus of the University of Nebraska. There were teachers in each generation, both men and women, in preparatory schools and seminaries from Maine and New York to Mississippi, Iowa, and Nebraska and, beginning with Reuben Nason’s graduation from Harvard in 1802, students at Bowdoin and Dartmouth Colleges, at the University of Illinois and finally the University of Nebraska, where the young Hawleys studied. We offer this collection of memories, stories, and anecdotes to all who are interested in this period of American history and to the descendents of these hardy folk.
