Delphi Collected Works of Proclus (Illustrated) by Proclus Lycius Pdf

Proclus the Successor was a fifth-century Greek Neoplatonist philosopher and the last major ancient Greek philosopher. He set forth one of the most elaborate and fully developed systems of Neoplatonism. Like Iamblichus, Proclus opposed Christianity and passionately defended paganism. He upheld that thoughts constitute reality, while concrete “things” are mere appearances. Ultimate reality, the “One,” is both God and the Good and unifies his ethical and theological systems. His attitudes significantly influenced the development of theology in both the East and the West. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Greek texts. Proclus by Siorvanes Lucas Siorvanes Pdf

Proclus was the most important figure in Neo-Platonism when it was established as the dominant philosophy of Late Antiquity. Neo-Platonism is not only the final flowering of Greek thought but also the mode in which it was transmitted to the Byzantine, Western European and Islamic civilisations. Stripping away the complexities surrounding this traditionally difficult philosopher, Lucas Siorvanes takes the reader through Proclus' metaphysics and theory of knowledge with original research examining all aspects of Proclus' work. This is the first book which places Proclus in his complete intellectual context and sheds new light on aspects of Proclus' thought, to which previous scholars have rarely done justice. - Presents a general survey of Proclus and his Neo-Platonism- Introduces results of original research, mainly on his metaphysics, theory of knowledge and science. All areas of Proclus' philosophical interest are covered including religion, physics, astronomy, mathematics and poetry. His philosophy is found in all these because concern with being and truth is central to all. Also introduced is the neglected area of his natural philosophy with its remarkable freshness of thought punctuated by the rejection of Aristotelian science and Ptolemy's cosmology. In this book, Proclus is shown as much more than just a metaphysician.

Proclus: On the Existence of Evils by Carlos Steel,Jan Opsomer Pdf

Proclus' On the Existence of Evils is not a commentary, but helps to compensate for the dearth of Neoplatonist ethical commentaries. The central question addressed in the work is: how can there be evil in a providential world? Neoplatonists agree that it cannot be caused by higher and worthier beings. Plotinus had said that evil is matter, which, unlike Aristotle, he collapsed into mere privation or lack, thus reducing its reality. He also protected higher causes from responsibility by saying that evil may result from a combination of goods. Proclus objects: evil is real, and not a privation. Rather, it is a parasite feeding off good. Parasites have no proper cause, and higher beings are thus vindicated as being the causes only of the good off which evil feeds.

Churning the Ocean of Milk by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky Pdf

The radiant essence of the Unknowable Deity curdles and spreads throughout the depths of the Great Breath (Space in Pralaya), the Eternal Parent, breathing out Chaos-Theos-Kosmos, an all-in-all Triple Deity. The Apsarases differ from the Gandharva Devas: the former are mere qualities and quantities. The latter, celestial singers, musicians, and instructors of mankind in the Secret Science. They are the Asuras or Daimons of the allegory. At the churning of the Ocean of Amrita, the Water of Immortality, the Suras and the Asuras twisted Shesha, the Great Serpent, rope-like round Mt. Mandara causing it to revolve. The Gods were at the one end of the serpent, the Daimons at the other.

Muses are the Nymphs of the Greek Poets by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky,Ralph W. Emerson,George R.S. Mead,Thomas Taylor Pdf

Thomas Taylor on the Muses that harmonise our triune energies by elevating them to the Noetic Unity of Spirit. Philosophy causes our psychical powers to be moved harmoniously, in symphony with real beings, and in accordance with the orderly motions of celestial orbs. Philosophy is the Greatest Music. Muses are the sources of the variety of harmonies. They impart to souls the investigation of Truth, and to bodies a multitude of powers. The Musagetes himself unfolds Truth to souls according to One Intellectual Simplicity. The Muses, the Celestial Spheres, the sensible world, the whole soul of the universe, and the souls of ordinary men, had a consubsistent progression. Ralph Emerson on Plato domesticating the soul in nature. George Mead on gods and their shaktis. Muses are intoxicated with the nectar of divine knowledge. They dance around Apollo, the splendour of one Invisible Sun. They are the powers of remembrance of spiritual knowledge enjoyed by the soul in past births. While Muses are the beneficent use of awakened spiritual powers, Sirens are the allurements of opened psychic powers. Madame Blavatsky explains how inferior goddesses emanate from superior deities.

Heraclitus on the two antithetical forces in life by Heraclitus of Ephesus Pdf

Differentiation is contrast, leading to the polarisation of contraries. So long as this mayavic state exists there will be perpetual struggle and “wars.” By adjusting the opposing forces, eternally reacting upon each other, the One Law in Nature, counterbalances contraries and produces final harmony. Says H.P. Blavatsky, founder of the Modern Theosophical Movement: “For Theosophists of our school the Deity is a Unity in which all other units in their infinite variety merge and from which they are indistinguishable — except in the prism of theistic Maya. The individual drops of the curling waves of the universal Ocean have no independent existence. In short, while the Theist proclaims his God a gigantic universal Being, the Theosophist declares with Heraclitus, as quoted by a modern author, that the One Absolute is not Being — but becoming: the ever-developing, cyclic evolution, the Perpetual Motion of Nature visible and invisible — moving, and breathing even during its long Pralayic Sleep.”
