The volume offers a concise introduction to and chronology of the Reconstruction period, scores of entries composed by subject experts, and an appendix that features key primary documents. The entries have been carefully chosen for their importance and relevance, are written in language accessible to high school students, and supply useful references for further investigation. Rebuilding the Nation by Catherine Mcgrew Jaime Pdf

During the first twelve years after the Civil War the United States was involved in its "Reconstruction" efforts. Out of that era came three amendments to the U.S. Constitution, a Freedmen's Bureau that came and went, and a variety of Civil Rights bills. This project started as a look at many of the important documents from the Reconstruction Era (a 200+ page book, Rebuilding the Nation: Reconstruction Era Documents and Cartoons which should be available soon. In the meantime, this portion of it soon took on a life of its own - focusing on dozens of illustrations, primarily political cartoons, many of them from Thomas Nast's work during this era. Thomas Nast, "Father of the American Cartoon," was especially well known for his political cartoons during this era and beyond. A note of warning about Nast's cartoons - they can be a bit "in your face." It is important to keep in mind the time period that he drew these in, and the messages he was trying to convey. Some of his cartoons appear more like racial caricatures, but as a general rule, he was extremely pro-minorities, and used his incredible drawing ability to focus on difficult issues of his day. His political cartoons, like the other drawings that I have chosen to include here, are generally full of complex messages. Please do not dismiss these works too quickly. The cartoons and other illustrations are arranged chronologically. By themselves they make an interesting pictorial look at the Reconstruction Era, or they could be combined with any number of the related documents from that time period.

Stories of the South by K. Stephen Prince Pdf

In the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, the North assumed significant power to redefine the South, imagining a region rebuilt and modeled on northern society. The white South actively resisted these efforts, battling the legal strictures of Reconstruction on the ground. Meanwhile, white southern storytellers worked to recast the South's image, romanticizing the Lost Cause and heralding the birth of a New South. Prince argues that this cultural production was as important as political competition and economic striving in turning the South and the nation away from the egalitarian promises of Reconstruction and toward Jim Crow.

Household Politics by Magdalena Fahrni Pdf

The reconstruction of Canadian society in the wake of the Second World War had an enormous impact on all aspects of public and private life. For families in Montreal, reconstruction plans included a stable home life hinged on social and economic security, female suffrage, welfare-state measures, and a reasonable cost of living. In Household Politics, Magda Fahrni examines postwar reconstruction from a variety of angles in order to fully convey its significance in the 1940s as differences of class, gender, language, religion, and region naturally produced differing perspectives. Reconstruction was not simply a matter of official policy. Although the government set many of the parameters for public debate, federal projects did not inspire a postwar consensus, and families alternatively embraced, negotiated, or opposed government plans. Through in-depth research from a wide variety of sources, Fahrni brings together family history, social history, and political history to look at a wide variety of Montreal families - French-speaking and English-speaking; Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish - making Household Politics a particularly unique and erudite study.

The Literature of Reconstruction by Brook Thomas Pdf

"In this groundbreaking new study, author Brook Thomas argues that literary analysis can enhance our historical understanding of race and Reconstruction. The standard view that Reconstruction ended with the Compromise of 1877 is a retrospective construction. Works of literature provide the perspective of those who continued to see possibilities for its renewal well past 1877. Historians have long tried to reconcile social history's emphasis on the local with political history's emphasis on the national. Literature creates national political allegories while focusing on events in a particular locale. Moreover, the debate over Reconstruction was a debate about state legitimacy as well as specific laws. It was a question of foundational myths as well as foundational legal principles. Literature's political allegories allow us to recreate those debates rather than view the end of Reconstruction as a foregone conclusion. Because many of the issues raised by Reconstruction remain unresolved, those debates continue into the present. Chapters treat how the racial issues raised by Reconstruction are interwoven with debates over state v. national authority, efforts to combat terrorism (the KKK), the paternalism of welfare, economic expansion, and the question of who should rightly inherit the nation's past. Thomas examines authors who opposed Reconstruction, authors who supported it, and authors who struggled with mixed feelings. This exciting text will set the standard in literary historical studies for decades to come"--

Reconstruction: a Very Short Introduction by Allen C. Guelzo Pdf

The era known as Reconstruction is one of the unhappiest times in American history. It succeeded in reuniting the nation politically after the Civil War but in little else. Among its chief failures was the inability to chart a progressive course for race relations after the abolition of slavery and rise of Jim Crow. Reconstruction also struggled to successfully manage the Southern resistance towards a Northern, free-labor pattern. But the failures cannot obscure a number of notable accomplishments, with decisive long-term consequences for American life: the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution, the election of the first African American representatives to the US Congress, and the avoidance of any renewed outbreak of civil war. Reconstruction suffered from poor leadership and uncertainty of direction, but it also laid the groundwork for renewed struggles for racial equality during the Civil Rights Movement. This Very Short Introduction delves into the constitutional, political, and social issues behind Reconstruction to provide a lucid and original account of a historical moment that left an indelible mark on American social fabric. Award-winning historian Allen C. Guelzo depicts Reconstruction as a "bourgeois revolution" -- as the attempted extension of the free-labor ideology embodied by Lincoln and the Republican Party to what was perceived as a Southern region gone astray from the Founders' intention in the pursuit of Romantic aristocracy. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
