Regional Disparities in India's Socio-economic Development by Kanak Kanti Bagchi Pdf

Regional imbalances in a country may be natural due to unequal distribution of natural resources and/or man-made in the sense of neglect of some regions and preference for others for investment and infrastructural facilities. India's successive Five Year Plans have stressed the need to develop backward regions of the country. In promoting regional balanced development, public sector enterprises were located in backward areas of the country during the early phase of economic planning. In spite of pro-backward areas policies and programmes, considerable economic and social inequalities exist among different States of India, as reflected in differences in per capita State Domestic Product. While income growth performance has diverged, there is welcome evidence of some convergence in education and health indicators across the states. This book contains 14 research papers authored by experts on the subject. They provide deep insights into the various dimensions of inter-state and intra-state economic and social inequalities in India.

Maharashtra Human Development Report 2012: TOWARDS INCLUSIVE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT by Jayachandran Usha,Kurian, Oommen C,Suryanarayana M. H.,D. P. Singh,Anuja Jayaraman Pdf

The present Maharashtra Human Development Report (MHDR) 2012 keeps the spirit of the Eleventh and Twelfth Five Year Plans of ‘faster, sustainable and more inclusive growth’ at the core of its analysis. MHDR 2002 was the state’s first effort in focusing on the prevailing human development scenario in the spheres of growth, poverty, equity, education, health and nutrition. Since then the state has come a long way in the last decade, achieving near-complete enrolments at the primary school level, a wide coverage of health infrastructure and initiation of new incentives, to name a few. The 2012 Report goes beyond being just a situation-analysis of the current human development scenario to a more analytical exercise in facilitating a deeper understanding of what and where the inequalities are, how capabilities can be enhanced, what has been the progress, where the shortfalls are and where the thrust of efforts to promote human development should be. Recognizing the centrality of inclusive growth processes to human development, the need to study human development outcomes disaggregated by gender, rural–urban, regional and social groups is the focal point of this Report. The outcome would be the identification of specific human development goals, evidence-based policy recommendations and directions to how those excluded from the growth and human development processes can be included to reap the benefits of the same.

The Making of Navi Mumbai by Annapurna Shaw Pdf

This book uses the case of the Navi Mumbai urban project to bring out many of the problems inherent in the urbanisation process and in the nature of urban policy-making in post-colonial India. It illustrates how even a new city, built from scratch, is riddled with social and economic contradictions---well-planned and serviced areas coexisting with slums and shanties. The work questions some of the accepted solutions to urban policy especially with regard to urban land and distribution of civic infrastructure. Navi Mumbai is being used as a model for building new towns outside other cities in India. This detailed case study of Navi Mumbai reveals the strengths and weaknesses of this model of urbanisation and indicates the policy directions that can obliterate the duality that has characterised the Indian city all through the twentieth century.

REGIONAL IMBALANCES IN AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT (A case study of Uttar Pradesh) by Dr. Sangeeta Sirohi Pdf

The increasing interest of academicians in studies regarding regional disparities in development is the outcome of the First and Second World War when many colonies attained political independence and consequently became conscious of the distressing disparity between them and their erstwhile colonial masters. The world is divided into the developed North and developing South, with many shades of disparities at varying regional levels. This dualism could not escape the attention of academicians, decision-makers and administrators. In developing countries, the problem of regional disparity is explosive. So all countries have been attempting to find ways and means to analyze and reduce the regional disparities in development. For this, they could refashion the structure and composition of growth so that it would meet the demands of social justice.

Regional Planning in India by Mahesh Chand,V.K. Puri Pdf

Although a few books dealing with some specialised aspects of regional planning have appeared in India, there has been no systematic treatment of the subject from the teaching angle, embracing the whole field of regional planning, drawing attention to to the work done by Indian scholars and focusing on Indian problems. The present book is an attempt in this direction. The 12 chapters of the book, besides dealing with the concepts, methods and techniques of regional planning, have been devoted to specific problems in regional development such as regional imbalances, rural development, backward area development and tribal area development. This provides the necessary orientation to the directions in which regional planning is relevant.

Liberalization, Growth and Regional Disparities in India by Madhusudan Ghosh Pdf

Upon the backdrop of impressive progress made by the Indian economy during the last two decades after the large-scale economic reforms in the early 1990s, this book evaluates the performance of the economy on some income and non-income dimensions of development at the national, state and sectoral levels. It examines regional economic growth and inequality in income originating from agriculture, industry and services. In view of the importance of the agricultural sector, despite its declining share in gross domestic product, it evaluates the performance of agricultural production and the impact of agricultural reforms on spatial integration of food grain markets. It studies rural poverty, analyzing the trend in employment, the trickle-down process and the inclusiveness of growth in rural India. It also evaluates the impact of microfinance, as an instrument of financial inclusion, on the socio-economic conditions of rural households. Lastly, it examines the relative performance of fifteen major states of India in terms of education, health and human development. An important feature of the book is that it approaches these issues, applying rigorously advanced econometric methods, and focusing primarily on their regional disparities during the post-reform period vis-à-vis the pre-reform period. It offers important results to guide policies for future development.
