Relaxing and Contracting Factors by Paul M. Vanhoutte Pdf

It is an exciting task to be the editor of the first monograph covering a new area of the biomedical sciences. Since the first report in 1980 by Robert Furchgott and colleagues (see Chapter 1) of the evidence of endothelium-dependent relaxation in isolated arteries, there are ever increasing numbers of vascular physiologists and pharmacologists who are scraping away the endothelium to look into its role in cardiovascular con trol. And the more one looks, the more one discovers. Not only is the list of substances that can induce endothelium-dependent relaxations im pressively long, but these intriguing cells can also secrete vasoconstrictor substances. The ability of the endothelium to modulate the degree of con traction of the underlying smooth muscle is an ancestral property of the blood vessel wall, illustrating the logic of nature, since the endothelial cells are located in the best possible strategic location to continuously monitor the properties (chemical or physical) of the blood. And more and more data emerge suggesting that in several cardiovascular diseases per turbations in endothelium-dependent responses are one of the early signs of the abnormal process. Thus, the importance of endothelium-dependent responses, triggered by the intellectual curiosity of one of the pioneers of vascular physiology and pharmacology, is now recognized not only by basic scientists, but also by all concerned with the cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of this monograph is to provide them with a reference work, so that they know where to start.

Mediating Nature by Sidney I. Dobrin,Sean Morey Pdf

Mediating Nature considers how technology acts as a mediating device in the construction and circulation of images that inform how we see and know nature. Scholarship in environmental communication has focused almost exclusively on verbal rather than visual rhetoric, and this book engages ecocritical and ecocompositional inquiry to shift focus onto the making of images. Contributors to this dynamic collection focus their efforts on the intersections of digital media and environmental/ecological thinking. Part of the book’s larger argument is that analysis of mediations of nature must develop more critical tools of analysis toward the very mediating technologies that produce such media. That is, to truly understand mediations of nature, one needs to understand the creation and production of those mediations, right down to the algorithms, circuit boards, and power sources that drive mediating technologies. Ultimately, Mediating Nature contends that ecological literacy and environmental politics are inseparable from digital literacies and visual rhetorics. The book will be of interest to scholars and students working in the fields of Ecocriticism, Ecocomposition, Media Ecology, Visual Rehtoric, and Digital Literacy Studies.

Geographies of Urban Sound by Dr Torsten Wissmann Pdf

Taking into account both the urban soundscape and the impacts of sound on the urban dweller, this book examines sound not as a by-product of urban life, but as a fundamental part of the urban experience that is crucial to understanding the city’s sense of place. Illustrated by case studies from Europe and North America, these range from on-site measurements to the construction of audio tours for local tourism, from media analysis of popular culture audio drama to sound-identity and city branding, and from the classification of noise in city planning to a consideration of the complex relationship between sacred sound and the creation of a sense of place.

Recent Advances in Coronary Circulation by Yukio Maruyama,Fumihiko Kajiya,Julien I.E. Hoffman,Jos Spaan Pdf

Coronary circulation research is advancing at a rapid rate. Not only are inno vative techniques for studying myocardial perfusion being developed, new mechanisms related to coronary blood flow control and mechanics are also being discovered. The progress in this field justifies an update in the form of this new monograph. The book is divided into the following sections: "Measurement of Coronary Blood Flow and Assessment of Myocardial Per fusion" discusses advances in perfusion measurements in humans as well as nonradioactive microsphere methods. . "Coronary Flow Dynamics" elucidates the effect of heart contraction on coronary flow, perfusion, and reserve distribution as well as systolic-diastolic interaction. Models-a frequent topic of debate-are used to quantify hypotheses. "Models of Coronary Circulation" attempts to elucidate the concept of tissue pressure. "Regulatory Mechanisms of Coronary circulation and its Clinical Relevance": N u.merous mechanisms affecting coronary flow have been defined and studied at the level of isolated vessels and whole organs. The chapters in this section provide an in-depth analysis of a selection of these mechanisms and their inter actions. "Pathophysiology of Coronary Circulation in Ischemic Heart Disease" considers important aspects of factors which restrict perfusion of the myocardium in ischemic heart disease. An understanding these factors is of crucial importance in the management of patients. "Small Vessel Disorder in Coronary Circulation" describes circulatory flow and how it can be influenced by drugs.

Women’s Health in Menopause by P.G. Crosignani,Rodolfo Paoletti,P.M. Sarrel,N.K. Wenger Pdf

Few topics in women's medicine today are as fraught with confusion and controversy as the question of appropriate treatment for menopausal symptoms and the prevention of negative long term health outcomes common to post-menopausal women. Cardiovascular disease (CVD), osteoporosis, and cancer -- the most common causes of death, disability and impaired quality of life for women -- can potentially be prevented or forestalled by dietary, behavioral, and drug interventions. A better understanding of the natural history of the menopause is critical to providing better care. If women and their physicians have a better understanding of predictors of risk, they could make more informed decisions about interventions related to menopausal symptoms, CVD, osteoporosis and gynecologic and breast cancer. Few other recently introduced medical interventions have as great a potential of affecting morbidity and mortality as does hormone replacement therapy (HRT). HRT has produced effect on health risk: some are reduced, some are raised, and some uncertain, and these data are interpreted differently by various scientific, medical and consumer groups.
