Atlas of Mammalian Chromosomes by Stephen J. O'Brien,Alexander S. Graphodatsky,Polina L. Perelman Pdf
THE UPDATED NEW EDITION OF THE POPULAR COLLECTION OF HIGH-RESOLUTION CHROMOSOME PHOTOGRAPHS—FOR GENETICISTS, MAMMOLOGISTS, AND BIOLOGISTS INTERESTED IN COMPARATIVE GENOMICS, SYSTEMATICS, AND CHROMOSOME STRUCTURE Filled with a visually exquisite collection of the banded metaphase chromosome karyotypes from some 1,000 species of mammals, the Atlas of Mammalian Chromosomes offers an unabridged compendium of the state of this genomic art form. The Atlas??contains the best karyotype produced, the common and Latin name of the species, the published citation, and identifies the contributing authors. Nearly all karyotypes are G-banded, revealing the chromosomal bar codes of homologous segments among related species. The Atlas brings together information from a range of cytogenetic literature and features high-quality karyotype images for nearly every mammal studied to date. When the Atlas was first published, only three mammals were sequenced. Today, that number is over 300. Now in its second edition, this book contains extensive revisions and major additions such as new karyotypes that employ G- and C- banding to represent euchromatin and heterochromatin genome composition, new phylogenetic trees for each order, homology segment chromosome information on published aligned chromosome painting. Summaries of the painting data for some species indicate conserved homology segments among compared species. An invaluable resource for today's comparative genomics era, this comprehensive collection of high-resolution chromosome photographs: Assembles information previously scattered throughout the cytogenetics literature in one comprehensive volume Provides chromosome information and illustrations for the karyotypes of 300 new species Addresses the mandate of the Human Genome Project to annotate the genomes of other organisms Serves as a basis for chromosome-level genome assemblies Offers a detailed summation of three decades of ZooFish (chromosome painting) Presents high-resolution photos of karyotypes that represent more than 1,000 mammal species Written for geneticists, mammalogists, and biologists, the Atlas of Mammalian Chromosomes offers a step forward for an understanding of species formation, of genome organization, and of DNA script for natural selection.

Asian American Film Festivals by Erin Franziska Högerle Pdf
Responding to a lack of studies on the film festival’s role in the production of cultural memory, this book explores different parameters through which film festivals shape our reception and memories of films. By focusing on two Asian American film festivals, this book analyzes the frames of memory that festivals create for their films, constructed through and circulated by the various festival media. It further establishes that festival locations—both cities and screening venues—play a significant role in shaping our experience of films. Finally, it shows that festivals produce performances which help guide audiences towards certain readings and direct the film’s role as a memory object. Bringing together film festival studies and memory studies, 'Asian American Film Festivals' offers a mixed-methods approach with which to explore the film festival phenomenon, thus shedding light on the complex dynamics of frames, locations, and performances shaping the festival’s memory practices. It also draws attention to the understudied genre of Asian American film festivals, showing how these festivals actively engage in constructing and performing a minority group’s collective identity and memory.
AS ALEX PRUD’HOMME and his great-aunt Julia Child were completing their collaboration on her memoir, My Life in France, they began to talk about the French obsession with bottled water, which had finally spread to America. From this spark of interest, Prud’homme began what would become an ambitious quest to understand the evolving story of freshwater. What he found was shocking: as the climate warms and world population grows, demand for water has surged, but supplies of freshwater are static or dropping, and new threats to water quality appear every day. The Ripple Effect is Prud’homme’s vivid and engaging inquiry into the fate of freshwater in the twenty-first century. The questions he sought to answer were urgent: Will there be enough water to satisfy demand? What are the threats to its quality? What is the state of our water infrastructure—both the pipes that bring us freshwater and the levees that keep it out? How secure is our water supply from natural disasters and terrorist attacks? Can we create new sources for our water supply through scientific innovation? Is water a right like air or a commodity like oil—and who should control the tap? Will the wars of the twenty-first century be fought over water? Like Daniel Yergin’s classic The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money & Power, Prud’homme’s The Ripple Effect is a masterwork of investigation and dramatic narrative. With striking instincts for a revelatory story, Prud’homme introduces readers to an array of colorful, obsessive, brilliant—and sometimes shadowy—characters through whom these issues come alive. Prud’homme traversed the country, and he takes readers into the heart of the daily dramas that will determine the future of this essential resource—from the alleged murder of a water scientist in a New Jersey purification plant, to the epic confrontation between salmon fishermen and copper miners in Alaska, to the poisoning of Wisconsin wells, to the epidemic of intersex fish in the Chesapeake Bay, to the wars over fracking for natural gas. Michael Pollan has changed the way we think about the food we eat; Alex Prud’homme will change the way we think about the water we drink. Informative and provocative, The Ripple Effect is a major achievement.

Regarding Educacion by Bryant Jensen,Adam Sawyer Pdf
The “Latino Education Crisis” not only threatens to dash the middle class aspirations of the nation’s largest immigrant group, it is also an ominous sign for democratic engagement and global competitiveness for U.S. society as a whole. This timely book argues that this crisis is more aptly characterized as a “Mexican Education Crisis.” This book brings together voices that are rarely heard on the same stage—Mexican and U.S. scholars of migration, schooling, and human development—to articulate a new approach to Mexican-American schooling: a bi-national focus that highlights the interpersonal assets of Mexican-origin children. Contributors document the urgency of adopting this approach and provide a framework for crossing national and disciplinary borders to improve scholarship, policy, and practice associated with PreK–12 schooling. Contributors: James D. Bachmeier, Frank D. Bean, Susan K. Brown, Benilde García Cabrero, Cynthia García Coll, Regina Cortina, Ivania de la Cruz, Guadalupe Ruiz Cuéllar, Claudia Galindo, Francisco X. Gaytán, Edmund T. Hamann, Nadia Huq, Mark A. Leach, Gabriela Livas Stein, Carmina Makar, Mary Martinez-Wenzl, Vilma Ortíz, María Guadalupe Pérez Martínez, Leslie Reese, Rosaura Tafoya-Estrada, Edward Telles, Ernesto Treviño, Víctor Zúñiga “This volume is one of a kind. . . . It represents a first step in what we hope will be an ongoing relationship between the institutions and the researchers on both sides of the border who have both an appreciation for the importance of this work and a dedication to improving the educational opportunities of those students that we share in time, space, and culture.” —From the Foreword by Patricia Gándara and Eugene García “A fresh, eye-opening array of essays that highlights how the economic and cultural vitality of the U.S. and Mexico is so tightly interwoven in colorful and breathtaking ways. Setting aside strident allegations of how immigrants differ from mainstream society, the authors illustrate our commonalities, how Mexican parents are among the most pro-family, hardest working families in our society. 'Bien educado' is not just metaphor: it animates how immigrant parents raise engaged children, along with a vibrant optimism about getting into America.” —Bruce Fuller, Professor, Education & Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley “Regarding Educación is an extraordinary achievement. World-class scholars from both the U.S. and Mexico come together to engage one of the most important developments in education in the 21st century: How do we educate the children we share across transnational borders to thrive in an ever more interconnected, miniaturized, and fragile global world? The answers they provide are timely, riveting, and humane. It is a book every teacher, every policymaker, and every engaged citizen interested in globalization and education must read.” —Marcelo M. Suárez-Orozco, Dean and Distinguished Professor of Education, UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies
