The Psychology of Saving by Karl Erik W‹rneryd Pdf

Some people save and others with similar incomes and wealth do not. Why? Whilst psychology has devoted little attention to the forward looking dimension of human behavior, it contributes theories and techniques for studying the cognitive, motivational, and social factors that affect saving. The book examines the assumption that man is forward looking and desires to provide for the future. It summarizes theories and behavioral research in the area of saving and explores the psychological insights and findings of economists and interprets them in terms of modern psychology. The Psychology of Saving will be welcomed as a major contribution to economic psychology which brings together research and analysis, developing our understanding about rationality, expectations, and consumer behavior.

On the Commodity Trail by Alison Hulme Pdf

Following the journey of eight bargain store objects, Alison Hulme reveals the complex story behind society’s simplest and cheapest commodities. Inspired by Walter Benjamin’s Arcades Project, On the Commodity Trail explores the colourful and fascinating histories of everyday objects.Along the way, we observe raw materials on municipal rubbish dumps in China, newly re-made products in the world’s largest wholesale market, and take a journey across the seas, to bargain stores in Europe and North America, arriving finally in the homes of consumers. Weaving together narratives from the people we meet at different parts of the commodity chain – waste peddlers, wholesalers, store owners, and shoppers – the book examines the places and people at the heart of these localized yet immense global networks.Unlike other investigations of commodity chains, this study does not chart a straightforward trajectory from production to consumption. Instead, it demonstrates that the low-end commodity chain is one of constant rupture in which products are made and re-made, blurring the dividing line between producing and consuming. An ethnography of material culture as well as an examination of commodity culture at a time of economic downturn, this deeply-engrossing book makes a unique contribution to our understanding of commodity chains and consumer culture.

Myths about Suicide by Thomas Joiner Pdf

Around the world, more than a million people die by suicide each year. Yet many of us know very little about a tragedy that may strike our own loved onesÑand much of what we think we know is wrong. This clear and powerful book dismantles myth after myth to bring compassionate and accurate understanding of a massive international killer. Drawing on a fascinating array of clinical cases, media reports, literary works, and scientific studies, Thomas Joiner demolishes both moralistic and psychotherapeutic clichŽs. He shows that suicide is not easy, cowardly, vengeful, or selfish. It is not a manifestation of "suppressed rage" or a side effect of medication. Threats of suicide, far from being idle, are often followed by serious attempts. People who are prevented once from killing themselves will not necessarily try again. The risk for suicide, Joiner argues, is partly genetic and is influenced by often agonizing mental disorders. Vulnerability to suicide may be anticipated and treated. Most important, suicide can be prevented. An eminent expert whose own father's death by suicide changed his life, Joiner is relentless in his pursuit of the truth about suicide and deeply sympathetic to such tragic waste of life and the pain it causes those left behind.

Thrift and Its Paradoxes by Catherine Alexander,Daniel Sosna Pdf

Thrift is a central concern for most people, especially in turbulent economic times. It is both an economic and an ethical logic of frugal living, saving and avoiding waste for long-term kin care. These logics echo the ancient ideal of household self-sufficiency, contrasting with capitalism’s wasteful present-focused growth. But thrift now exceeds domestic matters straying across scales to justify public expenditure cuts. Through a wide range of ethnographic contexts this book explores how practices and moralities of thrift are intertwined with austerity, debt, welfare, and patronage across various social and temporal scales and are constantly re-negotiated at the nexus of socio-economic, religious, and kinship ideals and praxis.

Gesture and the Dynamic Dimension of Language by Susan D. Duncan,Justine Cassell,Elena T. Levy Pdf

Each of the 21 chapters in this volume reflects a view of language as a dynamic phenomenon with emergent structure, and in each, gesture is approached as part of language, not an adjunct to it. In this, all of the authors have been influenced by David McNeill's methods for studying natural discourse and by his theory of the human capacity for language. The introductory chapter by Adam Kendon contextualizes McNeill’s research paradigm within a history of earlier gesture studies. Chapters in the first section, Language and Cognition, emphasize what McNeill refers to as the intrapersonal plane. Many of the chapters adduce evidence for McNeill's claim that gestures can serve as a window onto the speaker's mind. Chapters in the second section, Environmental Context and Sociality, emphasize the interpersonal plane and exemplify McNeill's focus on how moment-to-moment language use is determined by contextual factors. The final section of the volume, Atypical Minds and Bodies, concerns lessons to be learned from studies of aphasic patients, autistic children, and artificial humans.

The Independent Dentist by Dr. Ben Warnock, D.D.S.,Jennifer Warnock Pdf

Practicing dentistry has a high burn-out rate for many reasons, but the Alliance for Integrity in Dentistry has a solution—one that can transform the daily burdens of practicing dentistry: Dental offices should remain dentist owned, not corporate owned. Dr. Ben Warnock, D.D.S. with Dr. Nader Bazzi D.M.D., created the Alliance for Preserving the Integrity in Dentistry. The Alliance is a group of dentists who have joined forces to help keep dental offices dentist owned and dentist run. The Alliance has become a revolutionary group in the dentistry field. With private practices being bought up by corporations, the solo practitioner and dentist owned group practices are in immediate danger. If the pace of infiltrating corporate dentistry doesn’t meet opposition, the integrity of dentistry and patient dental health are in jeopardy. The Independent Dentist teaches the Alliance Triple-Win, which provides a path to a better way for practicing dentistry so that dentists can minimize stress and optimize satisfaction. Dentists will be able to complete all administrative tasks, help their patients achieve optimal dental and overall health, and still have time to spend with family and friends, and pursue hobbies. These strategies will enrich the field of dentistry while preserving its integrity. The Independent Dentist is a guide for practitioners who want to fulfill the dreams that spurred them toward dentistry in the first place.

The idea behind this book is to shine a light on as many artists and wordsmiths as possible. It is to allow them to freely express themselves. They were not bound to form, subject matter, or even agreement with one another, so as to truly reflect the diversity of this community. This book contains both stark realism and wondrous beauty. There are poems on love, loss, pain, struggle, justice, peace, revolution, art, and many poems that celebrate our city, its people, and its places. There is a subject index at the end of this book if you’d like to skip around. You’re sure to find something that suits your fancy. Fair warning to parents who wish to shield their children, this is not a book for little kids. No one was censored. Each contributor was encouraged to be themselves, to use whatever words they saw fit, and while it is a book that came together on a common theme of Vallejo, it also contains many other subjects that each poet was passionate about. Their words will make you think about the world and its many varying perspectives, experiences, and people. All contributors were embraced and accepted, even those with the tiniest of connections to the Vallejo community or merely only connected to myself in some cases. Anyone who submitted was welcome. Their writings remain their intellectual property, so reprint requests should go to the original authors of these pieces. This book is merely an opportunity of artistic unity that reaches across all boundaries. The most important part of writing, in this editor’s humble opinion, is the heart of the writer, and this book contains loads of it. These are the pure, uncensored expressions of the hearts of each writer, just as contradictory as life itself, so full of personal and universal truth. Collectively, this book is better than anything each of us could write on our own, and I am honored to have been its editor. Even if I had not been its editor, this is a book I would enjoy reading. The views expressed in this chapbook are those of the individual poets, not necessarily always shared by the city of Vallejo, its poet laureate, the Vallejo Peace Project, or perhaps, even yourself. You may vehemently disagree with some of their words. Please keep an open mind and heart anyways. Their poetry, personalities, backgrounds, and ideas are as gorgeously diverse as our city, and this book aims to welcome everyone within its pages, to give each artist total creative freedom for whatever vision they may wish to express, and to expose each reader to the beauty of their words.

Archaic Greece by Brian M. Lavelle Pdf

An introductory guide to the Archaic period in ancient Greece—the people, their society, and their culture. Excerpts from literary and other texts give voice to the interests, concerns, and emotions of the Archaic Greeks themselves. This book provides a brief but comprehensive introduction to the society and culture of the Archaic period in the Greek world from c. 750 to c. 480 BCE. It focuses on the persistent and often-conflicting themes, topics, and controversies of the Archaic Age (e.g., elite and non-elite, religion and science, tradition and humanism). It seeks to lead the reader to a broader and deeper understanding of the period by placing themes and topics in a mutually supportive contextual network that will underscore their significance. Archaic Greece: The Age of New Reckonings begins with a chapter on how sources for the period are evaluated and deployed, and goes on to offer a concise yet thorough historical overview of the Archaic period. Subsequent chapters cover polis and politics; war and violence; religion; science; philosophy; art; literature; festivals and games; social forces, values, and behaviors; and gender and sex. The book: Offers a novel approach to a very significant period that foregrounds literary evidence and the words voiced by Archaic Greeks, combining scholarship with readability; Conceptualizes Archaic Greek culture and society by focusing substantially on topics that supplement the history of the period; Combines diverse elements of society and culture, including religion, art, literature, games and festivals, gender, sexuality, and politics in order to develop a unique picture of Greece during the Archaic period; Includes a summarizing essay that draws chapters together, emphasizing the implications of their topics and themes. Archaic Greece: The Age of New Reckonings should appeal to college-level instructors as a book to assign to students enrolled in courses involving Archaic Greece and to others interested in this intriguing and pivotal period in ancient Greece.
