THE FLEDGLINGS by Howard Adkins Pdf

The Fledglings relates the maturation of three young men in the crucible of the terrifying and bloody Great War, World War I. Of course, their loss of innocence is not unique to war alone, but such an arena accelerates the process and is a much harsher forum than any other. The time period is one of revolutionary change throughout the world but nowhere is the transformation in the early Twentieth Century more pronounced than in warfare and here the curtain has opened on the aerial theater and rapidly become more refined day by day. Flight techniques, combat philosophy and the planes themselves evolved at a breathtaking pace over scarcely more than a decade following the first controlled and successful powered flight at Kitty Hawk in 1903. Only the extremely high mortality of fledglings and the specter of sudden, violent death, even for seasoned airmen, remained unchanged.

Meteors and How to Observe Them by Robert Lunsford Pdf

In this era of high-tech instruments, meteor observing is the one facet of astr- omy that needs nothing more than your naked eye. Meteors can be easily seen without the aid of cameras, binoculars, or telescopes. Just ? nd a comfortable chair and lie back and watch for the surprises that await high above you. It is a great way to involve the family in science where everyone is active at the same time, not wa- ing to take turns at the eyepiece. The kids especially enjoy the hunt for “shooting stars,” oohing and ahing at each streak of light that crosses the sky. While gazing upwards, it is also a great way to get more familiar with the sky by learning the constellations and seeing if you can see the warrior among the stars of Orion or the scorpion among the stars of Scorpius. Until just recently, one could simply go outside and watch for meteors from his or her yard. Unfortunately, humankind’s fear of the dark and the widespread use of lighting as advertisement have lit the nighttime scene in urban areas so that only the brightest stars are visible. Serious meteor observing under such conditions is nearly impossible as the more numerous faint meteors are now lost in the glare of urban skies. Today, a serious meteor observing session entails organizing an outing to a country site where the stars can be seen in all their glory and meteors of all magnitudes can be viewed.

Don’t Go Into the Cellar, Mr Holmes! by Jonathan Goodwin Pdf

This book contains five scripts, three of which I owe a great debt of gratitude to Tony Reynolds as they are adaptations of stories taken from his wonderful book of Sherlock Holmes stories ‘The Lost Stories of Sherlock Holmes’ - The Adventure Of The Medium, The Giant Rat of Sumatra and The Adventure of The Amazonian Explorer. As for the others, “Holmes Alone” is a light-hearted romp, that borrows elements and characters from several other Conan Doyle tales. “The Mazarin Malediction” is my attempt to embellish that oft-maligned story, “The Mazarin Stone”. Almost always it’s this story in particular that is singled out for harsh criticism. Yet I have always enjoyed the tale, and the others in the collection entitled “The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes”. “Malediction” is my homage to ACD’s original, written and performed with great affection and enjoyment. To paraphrase Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I have wrought my simple plan if I brought one hour of glee to the Sherlock fan, and the Doyle devotee.

The Sword and The Staff by Raymond Mayotte Pdf

An exciting action adventure for both the young and old. The serenity of a spring morning encompassing Ebony Castle and its surrounding village suddenly becomes chaotic when out of a clear blue-sky comes a fire breathing creature of destruction. The creature none other than a fabled dragon, a myth made up through the years by the old ones to awe and thrill the children. Yet here is the dragon belching tongues of fire that shatter the hard stones of the castle like they are made of sand. ******* When I return to check my snares the sun's dwindling light is casting long shadows of the trees across the crystallized snow and to my dismay I find five of the snares empty, but when I approach the sixth and find a rabbit caught in it I hurry forward to claim my dinner. Suddenly a sound causes me to glance up and see a gray shape launch itself from a mound of snow, when with a terrifying growl an enormous gray wolf, of almost my own weight, strikes me with enough force to splay me face down in the snow and clamp its jaws onto my shoulder. Suddenly an unbearable pain courses through me as the wolf's fangs dig deep into my flesh, two into my chest and two into my back, my complete right shoulder deep inside the wolfs maw. With a quick motion of his head the wolf tries to tear the flesh from my bones, and if it had not bitten over the bone it surely would have succeeded. The fear of what is happening arouses a strength in me I don't know I had, as I push to my knees and grab the snout of the wolf's open jaw and yank the fangs from my chest. While with the other hand I reached over my shoulder to claw and pull on the wolf's ear until I feel my thumb in the jelly like softness of its eye and squeeze. With a howl of pain the wolf jumps clear of me, but before I can make a move I am aware of at least four other gray shapes bearing down on me. Almost instantly a howl of pain escapes my own lips when another of the gray shapes clamps its jaws onto the calf of my left leg causing a river of fire to run through me, its fangs deep into the flesh trying to tear the meat away. Now everything seems to be moving in slow motion and I see the wolf, with the eye I gouged, limping away, while the huge gaping jaws of another is hurtling towards my head. Behind me, over my shoulder, I also ss the other wolf savagely tearing at the calf of my leg while my blood sprayed out to cover the snow for a large area around me. Suddenly a beam of bright light, about the thickness of a good staff, shoots from the pouch I carry the crystal in and strike the wolf hurtling towards my head. In that instant the gray form disintegrates in a shower of sparks and is no more. Over my shoulder the wolf tearing at my leg also disappears as in succession the beam lash out until all the wolves are vanquished and silence fills the forest. Astounded by this sudden turn of events I fall forward onto the snow as the pain wells up in me until I lose consciousness. Some time later I awake to find my body shaking uncontrollably with cold, the blood in my veins like it's turned to ice. In the darkness of the forest I can see where my blood stains the snow and realize I lost a lot of blood and my body is racked with fever. No matter I know I must move away from this place where the scent of the blood will attract more wolves, and with all the strength I can muster I crawl to a nearby tree and pull myself up only to find I can't put weight on my left leg, however I do manage to hold on and break a good size branch from the tree to use as a staff, then in my delirium hobble forward using the staff to help drag me along. *****

Michael Snow by Annette Michelson,Kenneth White Pdf

Essential texts on the work of the influential artist Michael Snow: essays and interviews spanning more than four decades. Few filmmakers have had as large an impact on the recent avant-garde film scene as Canadian Michael Snow (b. 1928). His works in a range of media—film, installation, video, painting, sculpture, sound, photography, drawing, writing, and music—address the fundamental properties of his materials, the conditions of perception and experience, questions of authorship in technologically reproducible media, and techniques of translation through written and pictorial representation. His film Wavelength (1967) is a milestone of avant-garde cinema and possibly the most frequently discussed “structural” film ever made. This volume collects essential texts on Snow's work, with essays and interviews spanning more than four decades. From its earliest issues, October has been a primary interlocutor of Snow's work, and many of these texts first appeared in its pages. Written by such distinguished critics and scholars as Annette Michelson, Hubert Damisch, and Malcolm Turvey, they document Snow's participation in postwar discourses of minimalism, postminimalism, photo-conceptualism, and avant-garde cinema, and examine particular works. Thierry de Duve's essay on linguistics in Snow's work appears alongside Snow's response. The volume also includes other writings by Snow, images from his 1975 work Musics for Piano, Whistling, Microphone, and Tape Recorder, and an interview with the artist conducted by Annette Michelson. Essays and interviews Jean Arnaud, Érik Bullot, Hubert Damisch, Thierry de Duve, Andrée Hayum, Annette Michelson, Michael Snow, Amy Taubin, Malcolm Turvey, Kenneth White

The Necessary War, Volume 1 by Tim Cook Pdf

Co-winner of the 2014-2015 Charles P. Stacey Award Tim Cook, Canada’s leading war historian, ventures deep into World War Two in this epic two-volume story of heroism and horror, of loss and longing, sacrifice and endurance. Written in Cook’s compelling narrative style, this book shows in impressive detail how soldiers, airmen, and sailors fought—the evolving tactics, weapons of war, logistics, and technology. It gauges Canadian effectiveness against the skilled enemy whom they confronted in battlefields from 1939 to 1943, from the sweltering heat of Sicily to the frigid North Atlantic, and from the urban warfare of Ortona to the dark skies over Germany. The Necessary War examines the equally important factors of morale, discipline, and fortitude of the Canadian citizen-soldiers. The war was an engine of transformation for Canada. With a population of fewer than twelve million, Canada embraced its role as an arsenal of democracy, exporting war supplies, feeding its allies, and raising a million-strong armed forces that served and fought in nearly every theatre of war. The nation was mobilized like never before in the fight to preserve the liberal democratic order. The six-year-long exertion caused disruption, provoked nationwide industrialization, ushered in changes to gender roles, exacerbated the tension between English and French, and forged a new sense of Canadian identity. Canadians were willing to bear almost any burden and to pay the ultimate price in the pursuit of victory. As with his award-winning two-volume series on WWI, Tim Cook uses original sources, letters from soldiers, rare documents, and maps of battlefields to illustrate the contributions and sacrifices made by what is often called the greatest generation. Magisterial in its scope, The Necessary War illuminates Canada’s past as never before. From the Western Front to the home front, Canadians served many roles in a war that had to be fought and won.

Feather, Brush and Longtail by Andrew Teal Pdf

On Ermin’s rite of passage to become the leader of the foxes, he experiences a ghostly intervention from an unexpected source that saves his life. Ermin did not forget this experience but did not understand the reasons for it until strange things start happening in and around the Lofthouse copse, the place Ermin calls home. Rats, known as longtails for some considerable time, have been plotting to take over Lofthouse copse, they had been breeding in vast numbers, savage hunters led by a vicious regime. A previous failed attempt to take over a fishing village on the east coast of England proved that lessons needed to be learned and sure enough they learned well. Ermin, as he watched closely to what was happening, discovered that there was a higher order of animals called biggars. These were the protectors of animals and the Lofthouse copse fields. He learned that the reason he was helped and his life saved was that he had been chosen as a biggar. As the threat from the longtails increases, plans had to be made. The biggars united and rose to the challenge, but it became clear that their combined powers would not be enough and more help would be needed. The biggars journeyed to Scotland to summon help from the mighty golden Eagle but to convince the Eagle to help all the biggars offered her a gift unique and special to each of them. Familiar faces from Ermin’s past also joined the fight that became a full-blown battle for survival.
