Short Talks With Young Mothers, on the Management of Infants, and Young Children by Charles Gilmore Kerley Pdf

Excerpt from Short Talks With Young Mothers, on the Management of Infants, and Young Children The aim of this book is to help the young mother to a closer acquaintance with and a more intelligent appreciation of the nature and demands of the little life entrusted to her care. In its preparation the author has kept in mind and has endeavored to answer the personal questions of many thoughtful young mothers. Under management are given such suggestions as may be carried out by the mother or nurse and in no way do away with the necessity of a physician. Suggestions relating to medical treatment are intentionally avoided. A mother should know all the details of the child's feeding, clothing, bathing, and airing, and what to do in an emergency. She should also be able to recognize symptoms of illness and appreciate their significance. She is not supposed to be skilled in the use of drugs. Better Babies by Samuel A. Visanska Pdf

Excerpt from Better Babies: A Guide to the Practical Care of the Mother and Young Child I feel it is due my readers to explain why I have written better babies. Of course, my basic reason for so doing is my ever-pres ent desire to see a world filled only with bet ter babies, and toward that end I have worked for years, devoting myself almost exclusively to the treatment of infants and young children. I felt that the medical profession would never fully perform any real service for humanity until the diseases of children were given the universal care, attention, and interest which they merit. Our Baby by Ralph Oakley Clock Pdf

Excerpt from Our Baby: A Concise and Practical Guide for the Use of Mothers in the Care and Feeding of Infants and Young Children The acute infectious diseases (diphtheria, scarlet fever, chicken pox, measles, etc.) have not been mentioned because they are, without exception, conditions which should be treated by a physician. In case of sickness, no mother or nurse should depend upon any book in caring for a baby, but upon the advice of a physician, who should be one well trained and experlenced in diseases peculiar to children. If a baby is sick, the physician ought to be summoned at once; and in no case should a mother attempt to prescribe for her child - disregard of this rule has caused thousands of lives to be lost. This book is not intended to supplant or to be a substitute for the physician; therefore prescrip tions have not been given. Creative Management of Small Public Libraries in the 21st Century by Carol Smallwood Pdf

Creative Management of Small Public Libraries in the 21st Century isan anthology on small public libraries as centers of communities serving populations under 25,000 that make up most of the public library systems in the United States. A wide selection of topics was sought from contributors with varied backgrounds reflecting the diversity of small public libraries. The thirty-two chapters are arranged: Staff; Programming; Management; Technology; Networking; Fundraising; User Services and provide tools to lead a local public library with relevant and successful services. This volume shares a common sense approach to providing a small (in staff size or budget) but mighty (in impact and outcome) public library service. The contributors demonstrate that by turning the service delivery team outward to the community with enthusiasm and positive energy, it is possible to achieve significant results. Many chapters summarize best practices that can serve as checklists for the novice library director or as a review for the more seasoned manager working through new responsibilities. Chapters are tactical, focusing on specific issues for managers such as performance evaluations, effective programming, or e-reader services. Time management is crucial in a small or rural public library as well as the challenges associated with managing Friends and volunteers. While most public libraries do not have the resources to satisfy customer expectations for instant gratification, ultra-convenience and state-of-the-art technologies, The authors of this book details strategies and methods for providing top-notch customer service while moving beyond customer service to the creation of meaningful customer relationships. This volume makes an important contribution to the literature by reminding us that public libraries transform communities of every size. In fact, never before has the role of the public library been a more critical thread in the fabric of community life.

The Care of the Baby by J. P. Crozer Griffith Pdf

Excerpt from The Care of the Baby: A Manual for Mothers and Nurses, Containing Practical Directions for the Management of Infancy and Childhood in Health and in Disease IT seems often to be taken for granted that the young mother will understand by a sort Of intuition the care which her baby requires, as though it needed no more than a newborn animal Of some lower order of life. The fact is that such a little animal, slight though its needs are when compared with those Of a baby, has a parent which by instinct is far better able to care for it than is the human mother for her child. The Young Mother Management of Children in Regard to Health by William A. (William Andrus) Alcott Pdf

The Young Mother Management of Children in Regard to Health William A. (William Andrus) Alcott It is far from being in the power of every young mother to procure a suitable room for a nursery. In the present state of society, the majority must be contented with such places as they can get. Still there are various reasons for saying what a nursery should be. 1. It may be of service to those who have the power of selection. 2. Information cannot injure those who have not. 3. It may lead those who have wealth to extend the hand of charity in this important direction; for there are not a few who have little sympathy with the wants and distresses of the adult poor, who will yet open their hearts and unfold their hands for the relief of suffering infancy. Among those who have what is called a nursery, few select for this purpose the most appropriate part of the building. It is not unfrequently the one that can best be spared, is most retired, or most convenient. Whether it is most favorable to the health and happiness of its occupants, is usually at best a secondary consideration. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 by National Research Council,Institute of Medicine,Board on Children, Youth, and Families,Committee on the Science of Children Birth to Age 8: Deepening and Broadening the Foundation for Success Pdf

Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Parenting Matters by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education,Board on Children, Youth, and Families,Committee on Supporting the Parents of Young Children Pdf

Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.
