Museums and Silent Objects: Designing Effective Exhibitions by Francesca Monti,Suzanne Keene Pdf

In a society where split-second decisions about the value of things are grounded on how they look, museum visitors are often drawn to visually striking or iconic objects. This book investigates the question of the treatment of items on display in museums which are less conspicuous but potentially just as important as the striking objects, arguing that it is important to show that all objects illustrate potentially interesting cultural contexts and content. The authors explore the disciplines of architecture, design, cognitive science and museology and offer a methodology by which the quality of museum exhibitions can be judged from a visitor-centred perspective. They provide new insights into the visitor-object encounter and the relationship between visitors, objects and museums. In addition the book offers a set of useful practical tools for museum professionals - for audience research, evaluating museum displays, and for designing new galleries and striking exhibitions. Richly illustrated with photos and diagrams, and based on studies of famous galleries in world-renowned museums, the book will be essential reading for all those concerned with creating effective exhibitions in museum.

The Silent Epoch by MLV Sage Pdf

In the heart of Africa, Kwame, a dedicated zoologist, wakes up to a silent and empty world. It's a New Year's Day like no other, with the sun rising over a landscape without human life. As he steps into the quiet wilderness, Kwame is faced with a haunting reality: he might be the last human left on Earth. With each day, the mystery deepens. The bustling streets and lively cities he once knew have become ghostly echoes of a world that seems to have vanished overnight. Nature, in all her untamed glory, is reclaiming her dominion, erasing the marks of human civilization and enveloping the earth in a wild new beauty. As months and years pass, Kwame's journey becomes a solitary quest for answers in this vast, silent world. Accompanied only by two cheetah cubs, Zulu and Nuru, he forges a unique bond with these majestic creatures, finding comfort in their fierce loyalty and the serene wilderness around him. 'The Silent Epoch' is a story of resilience and hope, a journey through a world transformed. It's a tale that invites us to follow Kwame's footsteps as he navigates through the remnants of a forgotten humanity, searching for signs of others, and a new meaning in this quiet, wild world. But is Kwame truly alone? Or does the silence hide secrets yet to be discovered? The answers lie ahead, as Kwame's odyssey takes us through the heart of a planet reborn, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

Tundra Plovers by Des Thompson,Ingvar Byrkjedal Pdf

There are four species of tundra plover: the Grey Plover, and the Eurasian, Pacific, and American golden plovers. They breed only in the northern hemisphere, principally on tundra, and migrate far south to coastal mudflats, saltings and agricultural landscapes. They have attracted avid interest from birdwatchers and researchers worldwide, not least the authors who have studied all four species. The Eurasian Golden Plover has a special claim to fame as questions over its flight speed first prompted the compilation of the world bestseller the Guinness Book of Records! This ground-breaking book on shorebirds (waders) examines the taxonomy, appearance, behaviour, ecology and conservation of Golden and Grey plovers, and compares and contrasts their natural history and biogeography. There are detailed accounts on all aspects of their lifestyle including feeding, mating, parental care, moults, migration and avoidance of predators. The personal touches in this book add immensely to its value, not least the authors' first hand experiences of the birds and their haunts. Most of their work presented here has not been published before, adding to the significance of this highly original book. Long-awaited considerations of differences in plumage, vocalisations, habitat use, breeding, movements and food are included. The links between phylogeny, biogeography and behaviour are bound to excite interest. The comparative approach is highly detailed and refreshing, and marks the book as a classic. Ingvar Byrkjedal has also contributed all of the wonderful colour and line illustrations. Over fifty-five photographs, over one hundred and twenty tables and figures, and many other embellishments complete this definitive book.

The Silent Experiences of Young Bilingual Learners by Caroline Bligh Pdf

Many teachers are increasingly concerned with how to best support the learning of the rising numbers of bilingual learners in schools – particularly those children who are new to English and therefore cannot yet communicate with the teacher or their peers in their first language – during the silent period. This book offers an alternative insight to that which is most commonly available to teachers and researchers, as instead of examining language acquisition purely from a linguistic approach; it explores the learning that is occurring through a sociocultural lens and even more significantly, from the young child’s perspective – the worm’s eye view. Investigated through the experiences of young bilingual learners allows the reader to make sense of the making meaning that occurs when the child cannot make sense of his/her new ‘world’; nor communicate verbally in the language of instruction in the classroom. Remarkably, learning through the silent period is revealed as both complex and ‘messy’ as the bilingual child mediates his or her own learning through a synthesis of alternative learning pathways. The silent period is presented as a crucial time for learning; distributed through a synthesis of close observation, intense listening and most significantly copying the practices of others. Throughout the silent period the children are not only seen to be learning but also contributing to the classroom practices. The book not only initiates new understandings of second language learning, but also offers creative ideas on how to raise the achievement of children who are learning English as an additional language.

The Silent Language of Psychotherapy by David M. Young Pdf

Therapeutic changes occur in many places, and among animals as well as humans. A theory that attempts to explain therapeutic changes should be based on principles that apply not only to those changes occurring during the hour, but also to those observed in the educational process, in interpersonal relations, and in the social milieu, as well as with animals. It would be desirable to discover principles broad enough to provide a deeper understanding of therapeutic change in this wide variety of situations. Experienced therapists appear to be similar in what they are doing, although they may disagree as to why they do it. In spite of the arguments about theoretical formulations, it can be observed that during an hour with a patient many psychotherapists may not follow their own theories too well. There probably is some relevance in a comparison of psychotherapy with a concept formation test: the subject gives the correct answers but is unable to state why he did so or what principles he followed in making his choices. The therapist, too, may help a patient but he is often uncertain as to "why" and "how." It is very likely that the effective principles in therapeutic work rest on processes that are more general than the specific principles advanced by different schools. This volume combines the elements of psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral therapy in a theoretical system that focuses on the importance of patient-therapist interaction, especially in terms of the exchange of subtle or covert communication cues. In this significantly updated and expanded edition of their classic text, Beier and Young analyze recent developments in new areas of practice facing today's therapist: managed care and the clinical impact of the control of healthcare delivery; and biological intervention and other issues related to psychotropic medication.

The Silent Child by Jeanne Magagna Pdf

This book arose out of the need to work with emotionally regressed non-talking children who entered hospital in full retreat from the external world. It helps parents and professionals compassionately comprehend the child's difficulties in depending on someone to receive communication.
