Bibliotheca Anglo-Judaica by Joseph Jacobs Pdf

Excerpt from Bibliotheca Anglo-Judaica: A Bibliographical Guide to Anglo-Jewish History IN the following pages we have attempted to bring together the raw materials of the history of the Jews in England, hitherto scattered among many thousand volumes or tracts, but some day, we hope, to be properly digested and suitably presented in artistic form. Our aim has been to prepare the way for this consummation, by arranging our materials in such a way as to make them most easily available for the students of anglo-jewish history - ii any such there be. We have accordingly classi fied the entries, and under each class we have arranged them alphabetically or chronologically, according as we considered either method of arrangement more suitable, letting uniformity give way to utility. As so much of the work is already arranged alphabetically, and so much else is anonymous, and as our immediate purpose is to subserve history rather than bibliography, an Index did not seem necessary. We have prefixed to the lists of books some account of the mss. Containing information on anglo-jewish history. Here we have been working on almost entirely virgin soil, which was scarcely even touched by the investigations connected with the late anglo-jewish Historical Exhibition. Where possible it has been our aim to give some short account of the contents of the various mss., so that the student may judge whether it is worth consultation. The bibliography itself is divided into three parts, deal ing respectively with the Pre-expulsion period up to 1290. Historic Parallels in Jewish History by H. Graetz Pdf

Excerpt from Historic Parallels in Jewish History: A Discourse Delivered at the Anglo-Jewish Historical Exhibition, 16th June, 1887 This mighty memory is enshrined in the historic tablets of the Jewish people. No other people on earth can compare with this in the duration of its historical memory. It has seen the lofty forms of antiquity rise and pass away. It has lived through the wild chaos of the Middle Ages, which pressed on it like a mountain, and it has helped to cause this chaos to vanish like the visions of a dream. It has seen the dawn of Modern Times arise, and this same people, almost unchanged, has a hold upon the present, bound into a community by holy memories and religious institutions, even though without a common land. The history of this community runs parallel with that of the world on which it has often actively worked, and by which it has been passively influenced. The history of Israel is a miniature history of the world. They bear the same relation to one another as the microcosm to the macrocosm. Israel has received light or shade from all the important events of the world's history, and has, too, cast them back upon the world. A Century and a Half of Jewish History by Charles H. L. Emanuel Pdf

Excerpt from A Century and a Half of Jewish History: Extracted From the Minute Books of the London Committee of Deputies of the British Jews Some introduction is necessary to this book, if only to explain its title. The Jewish Board of Deputies attains the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of its foundation this year. The Minute Books, which contain a record of its work from the date of its first meeting on the 19th November, 1760, are stored away, practically neglected, in my safes, and it occurred to me that to peruse these records and publish an extract from them might form an inter esting though modest contribution to the celebra tion of the anniversary in question. Seeing that the Board has, throughout, been the only representative Body of the Jews in this country, its history inci dentally comprises the greatest part of the civil history of anglo-jewry, and this is my excuse for the title. A History of the Jews in England (Classic Reprint) by Albert Montefiore Hyamson Pdf

Excerpt from A History of the Jews in England But the story of the ]ews in England is something more than a mere illustration of the general for tunes of the Jews. The unparalleled preservation of mediaeval records in England enables the historian to trace more clearly than elsewhere the peculiar position of the ]ews under the Feudal System. Then, again, the stages in jewish emancipation in England are very accurately marked. We see the ]ews earning by civic virtues the claim for political rights. Emanci pation in England was not granted in obedience to abstract principles; it was a practical concession made by practical men. In other ways, too, the story told in this book has its importance not merely as a record of the past but as a guide and hope for the future. The tale unfolded may not be brilliant, but the moral pointed is inspiring. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The History of the Jews (Classic Reprint) by Gotthard Deutsch Pdf

Excerpt from The History of the Jews IT is not frequent that an author on any Jewish subject receives the encouragement of a demand for a second edition of his book. My volume of Jewish history which is again submitted to the public, in tended primarily as a manual of instruction, is re vised chiefly by being brought up to date. This re vision became necessary owing to the great changes which the World War has produced in Central and Eastern Europe. Desiring not to enlarge the book too much, I have added merely the most important facts and names in modern Jewish history. In the chap ters dealing with the older epochs, only a few in significant additions have been made. Other changes are merely textual. It still remains for the intelligent teacher to explain the facts given in the book which, by the very nature of its intention, makes dry read ing for the uninitiated. Every history, no matter how large, is bound to be selective. My book, therefore, like every other on the subject, will be Open to criticism in regard to omissions. In the modern period especially, I have no doubt that some one will find certain names omitted, but I have conscientiously weighed the question in every instance and believe to have been impartial and to have deserved from fair-minded critics the Tal mudic compliment - that an author is to be com mended both for what he includes and for what he excludes. History of the Jews in England (Classic Reprint) by Robert Chambers Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Jews in England After the battle of Lewes, reports became current that the Hebrews at Northampton, Lincoln, and London had sided with the king against the barons. This of course roused the latter in their turn to plunder and destroy; while Henry annulled his bargain with his son, and for a while treated them with greater lenity. But again one of the usual excuses for persecution - in sult offered by the Jews to some symbol reverenced by the Gatho lies - found voice, and not only were extortions renewed, but a solemn statute was passed, disqualifying the Jews from possess ing any lands or even dwellings. They might not erect any new habitations, only repair their present homes, or rebuild on the same foundations. Studies in Anglo-Jewish History by H. P. Stokes Pdf

Excerpt from Studies in Anglo-Jewish History The writer desires to express his obligations to Mr. Israel Abrahams, Reader in Rabbinic in the University of Cambridge, who has written the last chapter and has kindly read through the whole work, making many helpful suggestions. It will be seen that much use has been made of Mr. Riggs valuable volumes on The Exchequer of the Jews. Miss M. M. C. Calthrop was good enough to copy several of the Appendices from documents in the Record Office. Thanks are also due to the authorities of Merton College, Oxford, the Pitt Press, Cambridge, the British Museum, the Cambridge Antiquarian Society, and Mr. Frank Haes, for permission to reproduce documents and illustrations. British Projects for the Restoration of the Jews (Classic Reprint) by Albert Montefiore Hyamson Pdf

Excerpt from British Projects for the Restoration of the Jews The Jews once settled in the country, the Christian population were afforded more and more frequent Opportunities for satisfying their interest and curiosity in matters Jewish. One or two unsuccessful attempts to secure their ejection, the occasional prominence of some individual Jew, the great Naturalization Bill agitation of 1753, all helped to keep the Jew well under the eye of the Englishman. This English interest in the Jews was known outside of the kingdom, for when at the end of the seventeenth century, a Dane, Holger Paulli, who believed himself to be of Jewish descent, announced himself as the forerunner of the Messiah, he relied mainly on the King of England to assist him. Another individual who was active in keeping alive the interest of the English in the Jews was the dramatist, Richard Cumberland, who created Jewish characters deliberately thinking it high time that something should be done for a persecuted race. These are one or two instances of English interest in Jewry picked out almost at random. There are others which might, without difficulty, also be cited. Nevertheless, the attention given to Jewish affairs by Englishmen before the dawn of the nineteenth century was, with very few exceptions, academic. Jewry as a concrete reality seldom occurred to them, and, with very rare exceptions, the connexion between the Jews and Palestine was remote from their minds. The nineteenth century, however, saw a notable change. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
