A Philosophy of Social Progress by E. J. Urwick Pdf

Excerpt from A Philosophy of Social Progress I ask the reader's pardon for a lengthy preface and introduction. It is not necessary, for an understanding of the argument, that either should be read; most readers will do wisely to omit them - as I think they usually do. But both are necessary in order to justify the unusual treatment of the subject which I have adopted, and to explain the object of the book. For my aim is a double one: I have attempted to introduce students and general readers to a point of view which may increase their interest in the study of social life, and perhaps, too, their understanding of the issues involved in all progress and reform; I have attempted also to attack the usual conception of social science, and the usual methods of presenting that science. Of these two aims, the former has resulted in a treatment of some of the principles of sociology which is at any rate unusual. There is, I believe, no book on general sociology which is satisfactory for ordinary people; and in view of the extraordinary vagueness of the subject, it is unlikely that any satisfactory introductory book will be produced. The History of Social Development (Classic Reprint) by Franz Carl Müller-Lyer Pdf

Excerpt from The History of Social Development The whole work comprises in the first five parts the Special principles, and in the conclusion the general principles of social development, and consequently covers the whole science of culture, or what is to Auguste Comte the same thing, the whole Of social science or Sociology. At the same time it will acquaint the reader with the results of this new and glorious, although unfortunately still imperfect, science. Since Sociology, in spite of its brief existence, has already increased to such a gigantic extent that a complete state ment would perhaps require as many volumes as this work contains leaves, only the most important fundamental principles Of development will be considered throughout, and all details which are not absolutely necessary for the characterization of the phases and for the comprehension Of the process of development will be conscientiously excluded. Each part is composed Of a series of detailed statements, which although members of a whole, are yet written as independent works, each one of which can be read and understood by itself, although naturally not with the same profit as if read in their entirety. The Social Problem by J. A. Hobson Pdf

Excerpt from The Social Problem: Life and Work Tms volume is designed to be an informal introduction to the science and art of social progress. It does not profess to furnish any sufficient outline of sociology or politics, but seeks to ask and answer certain preliminary questions which confront thinking men and women who are interested in work of social reform, and wish to reach satisfactory intelligible principles for their guidance in such work. Its primary object is to enforce the recognition of the organic unity of the problem of social progress by showing the interactions of the many concrete questions and movements which divide the attention of social reformers. Health and Social Progress (Classic Reprint) by Rudolph Michael Binder Pdf

Excerpt from Health and Social Progress Roughly speaking, two forms of answers have been given - that of the pessimist and that of the Optimist. Among the pessimists we may reckon all those whose profession or attitude compels or inclines them to look backward. They have paid a heavy price for doing so, Since no one can look into the past constantly without getting a wry neck and having his thought twisted. These people gloomily predict an increasingly more severe struggle, since, if it is only with the utmost difficulty that the present population maintains itself, what must happen if the population is nearly three times as large? Civiliza tion will be doomed, or be confined to a few favored spots; anarchy will prevail, and the second state of man kind will be infinitely worse than the first, because men have learned how to do more harm than ever before. Poverty and Social Progress (Classic Reprint) by Maurice Parmelee Pdf

Excerpt from Poverty and Social Progress A scientific study of poverty shows how fatuous are most of the measures whose familiar shibboleths are philanthropy, social service, moral reform, and religion. An effective pro gram for the prevention of poverty cannot be devised and car ried out until an intensive and accurate analysis of the mani fold causes of poverty has been made. Such a study requires an extensive knowledge of human nature and social organization. It is obviously impossible to make an exhaustive study within the limits of one book. But I have endeavored to give a com prehensive survey of the problems Of poverty which shows the one-sided character of many of the explanations of its causation and which will at least furnish the starting point for an effective program of prevention. Chapters III-V, inclusive, discuss the biological factors in the causation of poverty. Readers not interested in this aspect of the subject may omit these chapters and yet not be seriously inconvenienced in reading the remainder of the book. While all of the important causes of poverty are discussed, it goes without saying that the outstanding ones are the economic factors, since poverty is primarily an economic condition. Con sequently the discussion centers in the main around the two fundamental economic problems, namely, those of the production and the distribution of wealth. This book should be useful to many persons who are interested in these important social questions. It furnishes data of great value for the solution of many of the problems of citizenship and statesmanship. It is also suitable for use as a textbook for college and university courses on charities, poverty, pauperism, dependency, social pathology, etc. It will give the student an insight into the nature and causes of these great social evils and will furnish a basis for a more detailed study of special topics within this field. Feminism and Dialogics: Charlotte Perkins, Meridel Le Sueur, Mikhail M. Bakhtin by Carolina Núñez Puente Pdf
