IRON MAKING AND STEELMAKING by AHINDRA GHOSH,AMIT CHATTERJEE Pdf

This authoritative account covers the entire spectrum from iron ore to finished steel. It begins by tracing the history of iron and steel production, right from the earlier days to today’s world of oxygen steelmaking, electric steelmaking, secondary steelmaking and continuous casting. The physicochemical fundamental concepts of chemical equilibrium, activity-composition relationships, and structure-properties of molten metals are introduced before going into details of transport phenomena, i.e. kinetics, mixing and mass transfer in ironmaking and steelmaking pro-cesses. Particular emphasis is laid on the understanding of the fundamental principles of the processes and their application to the optimisation of actual processes. Modern developments in blast furnaces, including modelling and process control are discussed along with an introduction to the alternative methods of ironmaking. In the area of steelmaking, BOF plant practice including pre-treatment of hot metal, metallurgical features of oxygen steelmaking processes, and their control form part of the book. It also covers basic open hearth, electric arc furnace and stainless steelmaking, before discussing the area of casting of liquid steel—ingot casting, continuous casting and near net shape casting. The book concludes with a chapter on the status of the ironmaking and steelmaking in India. In line with the application of theoretical principles, several worked-out examples dealing with fundamental principles as applied to actual plant situations are presented. The book is primarily intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students of metallurgical engineering. It would also be immensely useful to researchers in the area of iron and steel.

Operations and Basic Processes in Steelmaking by Luis Felipe Verdeja González,Daniel Fernández González,José Ignacio Verdeja González Pdf

This book describes the operations and industrial processes related to the production of steel. The chapters cover the second part of the iron and steelmaking process, called steelmaking, presenting the stages of the process until obtaining the finished steel product in different formats for distinct applications. This book reports significant operating variables of the processes and basic operations of the steelmaking. The chapters contain numerous solved exercises conceptually supported on the thermodynamic and kinetic fundamentals of the production of steel from the pig iron in the Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) and the production of steel and ferroalloys in Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF). The thermal and mechanic fundamentals of the hot rolling operations and the mechanical fundamentals of the cold rolling, forming, and wire drawing to obtain different steel products are also reported. The book summarizes the strengths and uncertainties of steel as a structural material.

Ironmaking and Steelmaking by Zushu Li,Claire Davis Pdf

Steel is a critical material in our societies and will remain an important one for a long time into the future. In the last two decades, the world steel industry has gone through drastic changes and this is predicted to continue in the future. The Asian countries (e.g. China, India) have been dominant in the production of steel creating global over-capacity, while the steel industry in the developed countries have made tremendous efforts to reinforce its global leadership in process technology and product development, and remain sustainable and competitive. The global steel industry is also facing various grand challenges in strict environmental regulation, new energy and materials sources, and ever-increasing customer requirements for high quality steel products, which has been addressed accordingly by the global iron and steel community. This Special Issue, “Ironmaking and Steelmaking”, released by the journal Metals, published 33 high quality articles from the international iron and steel community, covering the state-of-the-art of the ironmaking and steelmaking processes. This includes fundamental understanding, experimental investigation, pilot plant trials, industrial applications and big data utilization in the improvement and optimization of existing processes, and research and development in transformative technologies. It is hoped that the creation of this special issue as a scientific platform will help drive the iron and steel community to build a sustainable steel industry.

Theory and Practice of CO2 Utilization in Steelmaking by Rong Zhu Pdf

This book analyzes the mechanism of the application of CO2 in steelmaking, by looking at the thermodynamics and kinetics of the reactions of CO2 with the elements present in molten steel. This book is the first academic monograph either at home or abroad on the application of CO2 in the steelmaking field. The thermodynamic conditions of the reactions of CO2 with silicon, manganese, phosphorus, chromium, nickel, vanadium, and other elements were calculated and analyzed using the FactSage thermodynamic software, and the selective oxidation law of the above multiple elements by CO2 was also analyzed. In terms of kinetics, the interfacial reaction mechanism of CO2 was analyzed via gas isotope exchange technology, and the O2 transfer process and transfer rate between the CO2, slag, and steel were studied. In terms of materials and energy balance, how to use the high-temperature characteristics of CO2 to control the temperature of the molten pool, improve the reaction conditions of molten iron, reduce the evaporation of molten iron, and reduce the amount of steelmaking dust were introduced. Based on the experimental data, theoretical models of unit operation for the application of CO2 in steelmaking were established, including decarburization, denitrification, dephosphorization, decarburization and chromium retention, vanadium extraction, and carbon preservation, and these theoretical models were applied to the steelmaking production process, which is an important step in going from theory to practice. The above research work has opened up a new solution for energy saving and liquid steel cleaning in the iron and steel production process and represents progress in steelmaking technology. This book is used as a reference book for managers, engineering and technical personnel, and related professional teachers and students of Iron & Steel enterprises, government departments, consulting services and evaluation agencies, colleges, and secondary professional schools.

Small-Scale Steelmaking by R. D. Walker Pdf

The contents of this volume cover all the major activities associated with small-scale steelmaking in mini-steelworks (except Direct Reduction, on which two comprehensive volumes have recently appeared - see refs 11 & 12, Chapter 2). There is, of course, an immediate problem of agreeing on a suitable definition of mini-steelworks and the entrepreneurial nature of many businesses based on the mini-steelplant route compounds this problem. Nevertheless, as is shown by the lucid review in the opening chapter, it is quite possible to derive a working definition of a mini steelworks. The succeeding chapters deal with steelmaking in a linear fashion; a survey of raw materials supply being followed by independent analyses of arc furnace practice, casting and rolling. The volume is rounded off by a consideration of the important topics of energy costs and environmental factors. As anyone associated with iron and steelmaking well knows, the indus try is not the exclusive preserve of the metallurgist, although he plays a prominent role in its activities. For this reason, it is hoped that the level of treatment will commend the book to a wide readership. that includes non-metallurgical professionals in plant management and elsewhere, as well as industrial metallurgists. Lecturers in universities, polytechnics and colleges of further education should find this volume useful as a course reader for final year and postgraduate studies of steelmaking.
