Strategies for Survival by William Dusinberre Pdf

Strategies for Survival conveys the experience of bondage through former enslaved people's own words. The source of this landmark content is a remarkable series of interviews conducted in Virginia in 1937 by WPA workers. Most of the interviewers were themselves Black; as a result, the subjects spoke with exceptional candor. William Dusinberre explores these interviews to re-create for the modern reader enslaved people's strategies for survival within the severe constrictions bondage imposed upon their lives. Religion and escape were the chief ways of coping with the indignity of family disruption, contempt, and the harsh realities of slavery. We see great creativity and variety in such responses to oppression, but we are forced to acknowledge the dispiriting realties of enslaved existence and the limits of enslaved people's resistance and agency.

Kim Jong-un's Strategy for Survival by David W. Shin Pdf

In Kim Jong-un’s Strategy for Survival, David W. Shin contends that Kim Jong-un's consolidation of power at home and the leveraging of Beijing, Moscow, Seoul, and Washington, and others abroad show that he is not a madman and, like the two earlier Kims, has consistently been underestimated. Shin presents an alternative framework for Kim Jong-un’s behavior through his analysis of Kim's background and his development as the successor to his father, Kim Jong-il; the evolution of the totalitarian system Kim inherited from his grandfather, Kim Il-sung; and the security environment after Kim Jong-il’s death in 2011. This book is recommended for scholars and students of political science, Asian studies, international relations, and history.

The Human Scaffold by Josh Berson Pdf

Humanity has precipitated a planetary crisis of resource consumption—a crisis of stuff. So ingrained is our stuff-centric view that we can barely imagine a way out beyond substituting a new portmanteau of material things for the one we have today. In The Human Scaffold, anthropologist Josh Berson offers a new theory of adaptation to environmental change. Drawing on niche construction, evolutionary game theory, and the enactive view of cognition, Berson considers cases in the archaeology of adaptation in which technology in the conventional sense was virtually absent. Far from representing anomalies, these cases exemplify an enduring feature of human behavior that has implications for our own fate. The time has come to ask what the environmental crisis demands of us not as consumers but as biological beings. The Human Scaffold offers a starting point.

Survival Strategies of the Almost Brave by Jen White Pdf

Survival Strategy #50: If You Can, Be Brave It's easy to be brave when your eight-year-old sister, Billie, looks up to you as her protector. Twelve-year-old Liberty feels it's her job to look after Billie once they are sent to live with their father, whom they haven't seen since they were very young. Dad is unpredictable on his best days, but when he abandons the girls at a gas station in the middle of nowhere, Liberty's courage is truly put to the test. As she and Billie struggle to make it home on their own, they encounter a cast of both helpful and not-so-helpful characters, including a man with caterpillar eyebrows, a lady dressed entirely in lavender, a tattooed trucker with a soft spot for cats, a kid who is a little too obsessed with Star Wars, and a woman who lives with a houseful of nontraditional pets. Along the way, they learn that sometimes you have to get a little bit lost to be found.

Organizational Survival: Profitable Strategies for a Sustainable Future by Gregory Balestrero,Nathalie Udo Pdf

BOOST LOYALTY, PROFITABILITY, AND GROWTH WITH A STRATEGY OF SUSTAINABILITY Organizational Survival provides a rational, research-based approach to creating a durable business strategy designed to meet the needs of today's customers and position an organization to outperform while positively impacting society, the environment, community, and the bottom line. Balestrero and Udo present an airtight argument for sustainability being essential to any business strategy going forward. Illustrating how successful companies around the globe are already deliberately changing--including Coca-Cola, BMW, BASF, and Walmart--the authors take you step-by-step through the processes of developing a new strategy, or altering an existing one, to integrate sustainability into core business goals. Organizational Survival provides the tools needed to apply risk management, scenario planning, and due diligence to sustainability initiatives via their innovative SEEE model framework--developed in conjunction with International Institute for Learning, Inc.--which encompasses the social, economic, environmental, and ethical factors of strategic change. Learn to build adaptive foresight and steer the future of your company based on: SOCIAL COMMITMENT: Integrate individual and community stakeholder interests into your strategy and align them with your company's values ECONOMIC COMMITMENT: Develop a business model that will generate profits through sustainability ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT: Honestly assess the company's impact on the environment and take requisite action ETHICAL COMMITMENT: Build trust among all stakeholders through openness, transparency, and accountability Embrace the changes businesses are facing, and implement a strategy now that will meet market demand and ensure your Organizational Survival. PRAISE FOR ORGANIZATIONAL SURVIVAL: "Fine book! What I find most impressive is the authors' success at achieving balance: Neither simply optimistic nor pessimistic, they offer grounds for hope. The book balances the need for sustainability with opportunities for its achievement. Well researched, their stories and their data come from both the developed and the developing world. The book is both deeply principled and highly pragmatic." -- Jay Ogilvy, Dean and Chief Academic Officer, Presidio School of Management "There's no shortage of corporate sustainability books or leaders. The rarity is corporate sustainability books by leaders: people who truly understand the institutional dynamics that get in the way of change, and that can be harnessed to make change happen. Greg Balestrero and Nathalie Udo plug this gap admirably in Organizational Survival." -- Storm Cunningham, author of The Restoration Economy and reWealth "Organizational Survival is a comprehensive approach to supporting and leading change within an organization. The practical insights, in-depth research, and business cases the authors present provide a valuable perspective on the business need for sustainability, as well as the practical assessment model and framework needed to successfully implement sustainability/Corporate Social Responsibility within an organization." -- Lisa Shambro, Executive Director, Foundation for Strategic Sourcing "Far more than a compelling case for change, Organizational Survival is a step-by-step road map for how to transform your corporate destiny and build a sustainable future for all." -- Simon Mainwaring, author of the New York Times bestseller We First: How Brands and Consumers Use Social Media to Build a Better World

Children in Street Situations by Riccardo Lucchini,Daniel Stoecklin Pdf

This book provides new insights on the lives of children in street situations by providing analyses from a qualitative perspective on the sociology of childhood. It proposes some insightful perspectives on the current discussion about the rights of children in street situations. It includes a unique selection of texts, which were initially published in French, written by the authors of this volume, on the lives of children in street situations in Latin America and China, that are now available to an English readership. It challenges obstacles, linked to macrosocial issues such as inequalities, images of the child, the separation of public/private spheres, urban dynamics and structural adjustments, as well as to microsocial dimensions such as identity, motivation, and activities that are constitutive of street situations. The book discusses the situations experienced by children, highlighting children’s reflexivity and strategies as social factors, and shedding new light on the debate “agency within structure”.

Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival by Institute of Medicine,Board on Health Sciences Policy,Committee on the Treatment of Cardiac Arrest: Current Status and Future Directions Pdf

Cardiac arrest can strike a seemingly healthy individual of any age, race, ethnicity, or gender at any time in any location, often without warning. Cardiac arrest is the third leading cause of death in the United States, following cancer and heart disease. Four out of five cardiac arrests occur in the home, and more than 90 percent of individuals with cardiac arrest die before reaching the hospital. First and foremost, cardiac arrest treatment is a community issue - local resources and personnel must provide appropriate, high-quality care to save the life of a community member. Time between onset of arrest and provision of care is fundamental, and shortening this time is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of death and disability from cardiac arrest. Specific actions can be implemented now to decrease this time, and recent advances in science could lead to new discoveries in the causes of, and treatments for, cardiac arrest. However, specific barriers must first be addressed. Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival examines the complete system of response to cardiac arrest in the United States and identifies opportunities within existing and new treatments, strategies, and research that promise to improve the survival and recovery of patients. The recommendations of Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival provide high-priority actions to advance the field as a whole. This report will help citizens, government agencies, and private industry to improve health outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest across the United States.
