Curriculum Windows by Thomas S. Poetter Pdf

Curriculum Windows: What Curriculum Theorists of the 1960s Can Teach Us about Schools and Society Today is an effort by students of curriculum studies, along with their professor, to interpret and understand curriculum texts and theorists of the 1960s in contemporary terms. The authors explore how key books/authors from the curriculum field of the 1960s illuminate new possibilities forward for us as scholareducators today: How might the theories, practices, and ideas wrapped up in curriculum texts of the 1960s still resonate with us, allow us to see backward in time and forward in time – all at the same time? How might these figurative windows of insight, thought, ideas, fantasy, and fancy make us think differently about curriculum, teaching, learning, students, education, leadership, and schools? Further, how might they help us see more clearly, even perhaps put us on a path to correct the mistakes and missteps of intervening decades and of today? The chapter authors and editor revisit and interpret several of the most important works of the 1960s by Louise Berman, Jerome Bruner, WEB DuBois, Elliot Eisner, John Goodlad, James Herndon, John Holt, Philip Jackson, Herb Kohl, Robert Mager, A.S. Neill, Philip Phenix, Neil Postman. Joseph Schwab, Hilda Taba, and Sidney Walton. The book's Foreword is by renowned curriculum theorist William H. Schubert.

A. S. Neill by Richard Bailey Pdf

A. S. Neill was probably the most famous school teacher of the twentieth century. His school, Summerhill, founded in 1921, attracted admiration and criticism from around the world, and became an emblem of radical school reform and child-centred education. Neill claimed that he was a practical man, but this book reveals that Summerhill expresses a comprehensive and distinctive set of ideas. Whether he wanted to be or not, Neill was an important educational thinker with a powerful influence on current educational approaches and philosophy. A. S. Neill is the first book to examine this philosophy of education in detail. It begins by showing how Neill's fascinating life story gives clues to the origin of his ideas, and why they mattered so much to him. It goes on to explore the main themes of his philosophy, showing how they relate to the work of other great educational thinkers, and how they are novel. It also discusses whether there are lessons that could and should be learned by other schools from the original, alternative 'free' school of Summerhill.

Summerhill And A S Neill by Vaughan, Mark Pdf

"Summerhill remains unique and different ... its underlying principles and its founding beliefs have informed and influenced generations of teachers in both sectors. It will continue to do so." - Professor Tim Brighouse, Commissioner for London Schools Summerhill is a world-renowned school in England where pupils decide when and what they will learn. The school was established in 1921 by A. S. Neill, who was named by the Times Educational Supplement in 1999 as one of the twelve most influential educators of the 20th Century. Known as 'the oldest children's democracy in the world', Summerhill allows pupils to air their views, propose new school rules and construct future plans for life at the school at the regular school meeting. This unique book contains key extracts from Neill's classic text Summerhill, a worldwide bestseller since its publication in 1962, and features contributions from A. S. Neill's daughter, Zoe Neill Readhead, who is the current Principal. She updates the story of the school - larger and more vibrant than ever before - from Neill's death in 1973 to the present day. In his contribution, Tim Brighouse discusses some of the ways in which the influence of Summerhill and A.S. Neill still extends throughout the world today. Ian Stronach, who acted as expert witness during the infamous court case, tells the story of the British Government's attempt to force untenable changes or close down the school in 2001, and the school's subsequent landmark victory in the Royal Courts of Justice. The book offers a truly inspiring account of a remarkable school, which promotes progressive change in the way pupils are taught and shows how real experiences of democracy can be created for young people. It is essential reading for teachers and trainee teachers, headteachers and school leaders, local education authorities and parents.

Decentralized Economic Social Organization by Reed Camacho Kinney Pdf

Representational government is not authentic democracy. The American Constitution cannot defend us from socioeconomic domination by centralized power. Independence means that people organize among themselves in order to meet all of their existential needs, which include more than preserving corporal survival. It means actualizing a better civil and civic organization, and adding to that a civic-economic organization (explained in my other writings) in order to afford every child the support needed to grow as individuated people. The genius my father contributed is the means of making consensus-based decision making processes a structured organization in conjunction with mutual banking, and its production-based economy, which as an organization must expand, or perish. That inbuilt expansive component is what distinguishes DESO from all other attempts to create a better lifestyle. By forcing decentralization to expand, as a structural component, consequent of consensus-based organization and its mutual banking, and its production-based economy, it will compete with mass centrist society for members, because living in real, sovereign community provides a better quality of life; a better culture. I am encouraged that there are people really interested in making this project move into its actualization, and that eventuality is nearing. My blog: http://decentralizationblog.wordpress.com

Progressive Education by John Howlett Pdf

How and why we should educate children has always been a central concern for governments around the world, and there have long been those who have opposed orthodoxy, challenged perception and called for a radicalization of youth. Progressive Education draws together Continental Romantics, Utopian dreamers, radical feminists, pioneering psychologists and social agitators to explore the history of the progressive education movement. Beginning with Jean Jacques Rousseau's seminal treatise Emile and closing with the Critical Pedagogy movement, this book draws on the latest scholarship to cover the key thinkers, movements and areas where schooling has been more than just a didactic pupil-teacher relationship. Blending narrative flair with thematic detail, this important work seeks to chart ideas which, whether accepted or not, continue to challenge and shape our understanding of education today.
