A History of British Birds, Vol. 1 of 3 (Classic Reprint) by William Yarrell Pdf

Excerpt from A History of British Birds, Vol. 1 of 3 From the lateness of the period, in reference to the printing of these volumes, at which the occurrence of two examples of this Species in Ireland became known to me, I was only able to introduce a figure and a short notice on a single leaf in its place among the Eagles. The fur ther particulars here inserted may prove acceptable. This Eagle, very similar in its appearance to our well known Golden Eagle, but almost one-third smaller in size. A History of British Birds, Vol. 8 (Classic Reprint) by F. O. Morris Pdf

Excerpt from A History of British Birds, Vol. 8 The Cormorant is a bird of almost universal distribution, and belongs to each of the four quarters of the globe. It is also accommodating in the situations it frequents, and makes itself equally at home on sea or land, both near the shore and farther from it, in barren and rocky places, as well as in those that are wooded, the neighbourhood of buildings, and the most lonely wilderness, rivers and lakes, fresh-water and salt. In Europe it occurs on the shores of Norway and Iceland, and then in the south is seen in the Black Sea and the Grecian Archipelago, as also on the Swiss and other lakes and rivers. In Asia, in Siberia, Russia, and the Icy Sea, the Caspian Sea, and India; in America, from Greenland and Hudson's Bay to Canada and the United States. The Cormorant used formerly to breed near the lighthouse at Flamborough Head, in Yorkshire, as it does still, or did not long since, in the neighbouring rocks of Rainelifie, before Buckton Hall. Excerpt from A History of British Birds, Vol. 3: With Coloured Illustrations of Their Eggs We may therefore leave the question of the classification of birds to the decision of the future, and, whilst recognizing its supreme import ance, regard it as a subject somewhat outside the scope of our present inquiry. The progress of ornithology in Britain may be conveniently studied in periods - the first comprising a century, the second half a century, and the third, fourth, and fifth each a quarter of a century. Excerpt from History of British Birds, Vol. 2: Containing the History and Description of Water Birds To point out the paths which lead to happiness, however remote they may lie from common observation, and at the same time to forewarn the inexperienced stranger against approaching those which terminate in vice and misery, is a task worthy of the most enlightened understanding. The learned in every age have laboured for these ends: they have set up their works like beacons and guide-posts, to direct their fellow-travellers in the journey of life. History of British Birds, Vol. 3 of 4 (Classic Reprint) by William Yarrell Pdf

Excerpt from History of British Birds, Vol. 3 of 4 This Fourth Edition of Yarrell's 'History of British Birds' was commenced by Professor Newton in 1871, and continued by him until May 1882, during which time the account of the Accipitres, Passeres, and Picari was completed. In June 1882 I undertook to finish the work - not willingly or with a light heart, but after considerable pressure and at much personal sacrifice. There were various difficulties which could be foreseen, and not the least among them was the conviction that my portion of the work must necessarily appear at a disadvantage when compared with the high standard of excellence attained by my predecessor. There was, moreover, a stipulation for the completion of the work by June 1885; and, allowing for a pre-arranged and necessary absence of six months from England, this left only two and a half years for writing the history of nearly 200 species. The accomplishment of the task within the allotted term may be allowed to extenuate some slips of the pen which are corrected in the Errata. The Second and Third Editions were little more than reprints with additions, of the First, which appeared just forty-two years ago. Excerpt from A History of British Birds, Vol. 1: The Figures Engraved on Wood; Containing the History and Description of Land Birds It may be'proper to obferve, that while one of the editors of this work was engaged in preparing the cuts, which are faithfully drawn from Nature, and engraved upon wood, the compilation of the defcriptions (of tbe Land Birds) was under taken by the other, fubject, however, to the corrections of his friend, whofe habits had led him to a more intimate acquain tance with this branch of Natural Hiflory: the compiler, therefore, is anfwerable for the defects which may be found in this part of the undertaking, concerning which he has lit tle to fay, but that it was the production of thofe hours which could be fpared from a laborious employment, and on, that account he hopes the feverity of criticifm will be fpared, and that it will be received with that indulgence which has been already experienced on a former occafion. A Pocket-Book of British Birds (Classic Reprint) by E. F. M. Elms Pdf

Excerpt from A Pocket-Book of British Birds As introductory to this little book, I think it is desirable that its object should, in the first place, be explained. It is intended solely for the purposes of reference in the field, and has been very carefully compiled by the combined aid of well known ornithological works, coupled with practical observa tions and notes made by myself from 'time to time in various parts of the British Isles. The book is of a small size, and should be carried in the pocket, where it would always be handy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A History of British Birds, Vol. 1 by Henry Seebohm Pdf

Excerpt from A History of British Birds, Vol. 1: With Coloured Illustrations of Their Eggs Interbreeding may or may not mean cross-breeding. Wherever the interbreeding which habitually takes place between the individuals of a species has not ceased, any differences between them can only be subspecific. Subspecies may be defined as groups in which the interbreeding which habitually takes place between individuals in a Species has not yet ceased, but takes place along the whole line of its geographical distribution, though seldom between the two extremes.xii IN troduction.
