Construction Health and Safety in Developing Countries by Patrick Manu,Fidelis Emuze,Tarcisio Abreu Saurin,Bonaventura H. W. Hadikusumo Pdf

The global construction sector is infamous for high levels of injuries, accidents and fatalities, and poor health and well-being of its workforce. While this record appears in both developed and developing countries, the situation is worse in developing countries, where major spending on infrastructure development is expected. There is an urgent need to improve construction health and safety (H&S) in developing countries. The improvement calls for the development of context-specific solutions underpinned by research into challenges and related solutions. This edited volume advances the current understanding of construction H&S in developing countries by revealing context-specific issues and challenges that have hitherto not been well explored in the literature, and applying emergent H&S management approaches and practices in developing countries. Coverage includes countries from the regions of sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe. This book, which is the first compendium of research into construction H&S issues in developing countries, adds considerable insight into the field and presents innovative solutions to help address poor H&S in construction in developing nations. It is a must read for all construction professionals, researchers and practitioners interested in construction and occupational H&S, safety management, engineering management and development studies.

The Political Economy of Post-COVID Life and Work in the Global South: Pandemic and Precarity by Sandya Hewamanne,Smytta Yadav Pdf

This edited volume highlights cascading effects of the pandemic and lockdown on informal economies of varied countries in the Global South. Uneven development after colonization, imperialism, and externally influenced conflict have caused many countries in the formally colonized or semi-occupied countries in the world to lag behind in wealth accumulation, investments in manufacturing, and technology. The fact that these countries were dragged into world market dynamics on an equal footing with already developed countries exacerbated these inequalities and saw the rapid burgeoning of informal economies. COVID-19 and the lockdown of western countries unravelled global production chains, resulting in hordes of workers in the Global South losing their livelihoods. Even people engaged in traditionally locally-bound economic activities, such as domestic work and sex work, found their livelihoods disappear. This volume brings together case studies from India, Brazil, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka to analyze global economic disruptions as they affected informal sector workers who were already largely invisible within state development policies. The chapters question whether existing models of neoliberal development are still conducive within the post-pandemic Global South as it grapples with rebuilding economies, livelihoods, institutions, and systems of governance.

PRINCIPLES OF INDUSTRIAL SAFETY MANAGEMENT by DAS, AKHIL KUMAR Pdf

Safety or the effects of its absence are often attributed to fate and loosely termed as “acts of God”. In reality, incidents occur when one or more components of a system or their mutual linkages fail to perform satisfactorily. It is not a simple task to analyse a system failure scenario wherein multiple components interact and it certainly is not a layman's job. Therefore, it is imperative to give top-most priority to the safety management in industries. The book, systematically organised in fifteen chapters, addresses all components of industrial safety management and explains their principles with the aim to help readers develop good understanding of the subject. KEY FEATURES • Special focus on Indian scenario • Use of student-friendly language as well as spoken-style approach • Ample illustrations—figures and tables—to enrich fruitful learning • Chapter-end summary for quick recap of the concepts • Chapter-end questions to assess students' understanding of the concepts

Cutting the Gordian Knot by T N Hari,Hari Menon Pdf

Cutting the Gordian Knot discusses India's quest for prosperity through job creation. The underlying pieces of this quest are complex and intertwined-an education system that has outlived its shelf life with misplaced aspiration for white-collared jobs. India got educated before it got skilled. Skilling along with micro-entrepreneurship needs to be rejuvenated. Rapid developments in technology are changing the nature of jobs and employment itself. We are living in truly interesting times. The country's youth bulge makes it one of the youngest nations in the world. A youthful demographic profile is necessary but not a sufficient condition for economic growth. It needs to be harnessed well. Some miscalculations and wrong moves could very easily transform a demographic dividend to a recipe for mass discontent. The country has a long way to go, and global disruptions due to rapidly changing technologies are creating hazards on the way. New ways will have to be found, and dominant narratives will have to be challenged. The book presents these views, data and insights with an intent to spark dialogue, awareness and, eventually, change.

Farewell To The Good Old Days by David R. Greatrix Pdf

Farewell to the Good Old Days is a lively and intimate tale by David Greatrix, a man who has lived a dynamic professional life, first as an aerospace engineer and then as a professor of the subject. The book, leaning heavily on the actual life experiences of Greatrix and a number of his academic colleagues close and far away, is divided into two discrete parts; the book’s narrator for both parts is nominally a fictional consolidated representation of Greatrix, drawing from various sources in addition to the author. Part One covers the narrator’s childhood and early adulthood, followed by his moving into his years of growth as a professional breaking into the challenging field of aerospace engineering. Part Two tracks the narrator’s subsequent twenty-five-year academic career as a professor of aerospace engineering at a university in a major urban centre. Prominent in this story are the many challenges the narrator encounters in his navigation of academe in a high-profile setting for engineering education. In an emotional narrative that never strays far from various shades of humour, the narrator shares the details of his teaching and research experience at his institution, frequently bumping up against the pointy bits of an evolving cosmopolitan academic culture. In colourful detail, the narrator reveals the small successes, notable failures, unexpected events, and crushing disappointments that describe his tenure at his university. The narrator is especially candid in his revelations about episodes of betrayal. He takes aim at big targets, including the Canadian government, university administrators, and the academic superstructure as a whole. The result is an enlightening view into an individual’s complicated experience in a demanding world that serves as a microcosm of society at large.
