Unsung Hollywood Musicals of the Golden Era by Edwin M. Bradley Pdf

The most memorable Hollywood musicals of 1930s showcased the talents of stars like Fred Astaire, Jeanette MacDonald, Bing Crosby and Alice Faye. The less memorable ones didn't. This book takes a look at the unsung songfests of the '30s--secondary or forgotten features with short-lived or unlikely stars from major studios and Poverty Row. Through analysis of films such as Lord Byron of Broadway (1930), Shoot the Works (1934), Bottoms Up (1934), Moonlight and Pretzels (1933) and The Music Goes 'Round (1936), the author profiles such performers as Dorothy Dell, Lee Dixon, Peggy Fears, Lawrence Gray, Joe Morrison and the mother-daughter team of Myrt and Marge. Behind-the-scenes figures are discussed, like the infamously profligate producer Lou Brock, whose flops Down to Their Last Yacht (1934) and Top of the Town (1937) cost him his career. Filmographies and production information are included, with background on key participants.

Just Remember This by Colin Bratkovich Pdf

I have completed this manuscript Just Remember This, or as American Pop Singers 1900-1950+, about music before the 1950s in America. It perhaps offers knowledge and insights not previously found in other musical reference books. I have moreover been working on this book very meticulously over the past twelve-plus years. It started as a bit of fun and gradually became serious as I began to listen along with the vocalists of popular music, of the era before 1950, essentially just before the dawn of rock and roll. If you can call it that! Indeed genre and labeling of American music started here, and then from everywhere. While the old adage of always starting from somewhere could be noted in every century, the 1900s had produced the technology. Understanding the necessity, more so, finds a curiosity on the part of a general public hungry for entertainment, despite 6 day work weeks, World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II.

In Their Time by Sam McClanahan Pdf

In Their Time revolves around the life and times of Harriet Arnold, mistress of Daffodil Hill. Tall, attractive, headstrong, auburn haired Harriet finds herself struggling to survive during the Union army's occupation of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. With her husband Edwin, away fighting under the command of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest, Harriet struggles to raise two teenage daughters and to protect her palatial home and property from Yankee soldiers who several time threaten to set her home ablaze. And if dealing with the Union soldiers were not enough, she also is forced to deal with Daffodil Hill's former revengeful overseer and a sex-crazed gambler bent on kidnapping her daughters and beautiful young house guests. Although this carefully researched, historically accurate novel brings a people, a place and a time alive again it goes beyond a portrayal of a particular people in a specific place while exploring the broader war, especially those battles that directly impacted Middle Tennessee. Although sorely tested, Harriet's early frontier training has prepared her well for the challenges she must face during the dark and difficult war years. Faced with events so shocking that she could never have imagined in her wildest dreams, Harriet somehow manages to courageously defend her household with grit and a fierce and indomitable spirit.

Dixie Redux by Raymond Arsenault,Orville Vernon Burton Pdf

Dixie Redux: Essays in Honor of Sheldon Hackney is a collection of original essays written by some of the nation’s most distinguished historians. Each of the contributors has a personal as well as a professional connection to Sheldon Hackney, a distinguished scholar in his own right who has served as Provost of Princeton University, president of Tulane University and the University of Pennsylvania, and the chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities. In a variety of roles–teacher, mentor, colleague, administrator, writer, and friend–Sheldon Hackney has been a source of wisdom, empowerment, and wise counsel during more than four decades of historical and educational achievement. His life, both inside and outside the academy, has focused on issues closely related to civil rights, social justice, and the vagaries of race, class, regional culture, and national identity. Each of the essays in this volume touches upon one or more of these important issues–themes that have animated Sheldon Hackney’s scholarly and professional life.

Not only are all of Kern’s stage and screen projects from 1904 to 1946 covered, but there are also entries on all the major librettists and lyricists with whom he worked, as well as producers, directors, actors, and other individuals who figured prominently in his career. Approximately 100 of Kern’s most important songs are discussed, and other entries address awards, collaborations, working methods, song styles, and other related subjects. The encyclopedia also includes a brief biography of Kern, a chronology of his life and work, and appendices on recordings, interpolations, revivals, and remakes. The most complete work on one of America’s greatest composers, this fascinating, readable, and extensive look at Kern will appeal totheatregoers, movie musical fans, students, teachers, and professionals in musical theatre.

“Fifty years after its first publication, Country Music USA still stands as the most authoritative history of this uniquely American art form. Here are the stories of the people who made country music into such an integral part of our nation’s culture. This groundbreaking work, now updated, is the definitive chronicle of the sweeping drama of the country music experience.” —Chet Flippo, former editorial director, CMT: Country Music Television and CMT.com “Country Music USA is the definitive history of country music and of the artists who shaped its fascinating worlds.” —William Ferris, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, former chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities and coeditor of the Encyclopedia of Southern Culture Since its first publication in 1968, Bill C. Crowd Control by David Marx Pdf

I wrote "Crowd Control" during my senior year at P.S.U. Most was written in my dorm room at P.S.U., but also at Greg and Elenor's apartment. "Crowd Control" is the third book of a four book set of books. Sad to say I was in an eastern religion phase back then. The religion tends to threaten to swamp the poems and pages and does not really resolve itself until Book Four, "The Salvation Shuffle". Now, in 2011, I am about through with these works finally. Originally the poetry was not punctuated, that only added later on. I stopped writing like this about 30 years ago, now doing only prose.

Sentimental Journey by Marvin E. Paymer,Don E. Post Pdf

Sentimental Journey is a cornucopia of 546 rang portraits that tell the story of America's very own great music, from its beginnings on Tin Pan Alley through its flourishing in step with the rise of the Broadway musical, radio, recordings, the big bands, and the film musical. The book spans 25 years, broken up into three decades entitled The Roaring Twenties, The Depression Years, and The War Years, each of which begins with a prologue giving a general description of the decade. Each year within the decades gives further historical background against which the individual songs were written -- including the political, social and artistic events. Within each year thc songs are portrayed individually, telling what made the song special and gives its vital statistics along with composer, lyricist, publisher, and when, where and by whom it was introduced. The twenty-six chapters of Sentimental Journey is finalized with a set of Appendices containing glossary, bibliography, index of composers and lyricists and an index of songs. No matter from what generation the reader is part of, the music from this book is being constantly rediscovered, and has become part of the American heritage.
