The Books of Joel, Obadiah, Jonah, and Micah by Leslie C. Allen Pdf

The eloquent and uncompromising calls for social righteousness by the Minor Prophets are familiar to many, yet the writings themselves are probably the least-studied and least-known texts of the Old Testament. Those who are familiar with these books are also aware of the historical and literary problems that plague their study. Drawing on theological, historical, and literary insights, Leslie Allen’s commentary on Joel, Obadiah, Jonah, and Micah carefully and imaginatively reconstructs the context in which the original Hebrew audience received the prophets’ messages. In turn, Allen shows what relevance they hold for contemporary Christians. For each of the books, Allen includes a substantial introduction, presenting and assessing a broad range of scholarship, a select bibliography, and an extensive commentary on the author’s own translation of the text. Allen pays special attention to Micah, in which he treats at greater length many of the forms and motifs that also appear in Joel, Obadiah, and Jonah. The introductory material for Joel includes discussions of canonicity and textual criticism that apply to the entire volume.

Expository Parenting by Josh Niemi Pdf

There is much to be said for men and women who courageously evangelize on college campuses, in prisons, and near shopping centers. After all, the Bible indicates that disciples are primarily made by going out to meet lost people where they are. But make no mistake about it: if you're a parent, The Great Commission has come to you-in a bassinet, a booster seat, or a bunk-bed. While other parenting philosophies rely on "what seems to work" (i.e. pragmatism), "what we've always done" (i.e. traditionalism), or "what's right for us" (i.e. relativism), a better perspective is founded upon a biblical approach: teaching the full counsel of God and allowing Scripture to do its work in a child's heart. How do we accomplish this? We must examine the Bible's instructions for pastors, and then apply those principles in the home. In other words, just as the preacher must be committed to expository preaching, so too must the parent be committed to expository parenting.

How Israelites Pray to Their ABBA by Unknown Hebrew Pdf

When we pray to our Abba, we are presenting a petition on our behalf or the behalf of another. It is a plea; not a demand. In our sincerity, the Father looks at our hearts. But what is it that we are trying to do? Are we asking for something, or are we trying to see if the Father is listening to us? Take a look at the book of Proverbs 28:9, it says, "He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination." So, for all who say, the law is dead; do you think your prayer is being heard? Go to 1 Kings 8:27-29, David wanted to build the Father a temple; but the Father told him no, someone from your loins would build it. Solomon builds the temple, and he is dedicating it. It reads, "But will ELOHIM indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?" Verse 28, "Yet have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O YAHUAH my EL, to hearken unto the cry and to the prayer, which thy servant prayeth before thee to day:" Verse 29, "That thine eyes may be open toward this house night and day, even toward the place of which thou hast said, My name shall be there: that thou mayest hearken unto the prayer which thy servant shall make toward this place.' So, when we pray; we always pray towards Jerusalem. The reason why is because the Father placed his name there; this is where the temple was built, and the Father's eye would be on it night and day. Let us stay in the same book, and chapter; but go down to verse 38, it reads, "What prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house:" This is an instruction on how to pray correctly. There is a right and wrong way to do anything; although we know that in a time that we cannot pray properly; YAHUAH will hear us. However, if it is possible; there is a proper way of doing it. What is going on in verse 38 is; it is being explained how we should do it. Not only are we to face toward Jerusalem; we are to stretch out our arms. Let us look at what Solomon did in verse 22-23, it reads, "And Solomon stood before the altar of the YAHUAH in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven:" Verse 23, " And he said, YAHUAH ELOHIM of Israel, there is no ELOHIM like thee, in heaven above, or on earth beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart:" Abba knows our hearts; He really does; it is evil from its youth, but those who walk before Him; properly, and do the things that He requires of us. He also knows that heart as well. After the temple was built, Solomon was praying to the Father in the presence of the Elders of Israel. He is explaining in this pray and instructions; that we are to pay towards the temple; forever. Go to 1 Kings 9:3, it reads, "And the Lord said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually." Obadiah Through Malachi by William P. Brown Pdf

Taken together, the nine prophets found in the books Obadiah through Malachi lived during a tumultuous two hundred years of Israelite history. Their communities dealt with the crisis of the impending Assyrian threat in the eighth century and the Babylonian exile in the sixth, as well as the hopeful age of restoration in the late sixth and early fifth centuries. Intimately connected to the travails and needs of their communities, these prophets had the responsibility of bringing God's message of hope - even in the bleakest times - to their people. Their questions - Where is the God of justice and mercy? What is God up to these days? and What are we, in turn, to do? - are timely for our own church and society. William Brown offers readers a look at these important prophets and their message about where the God of justice and mercy is at work today.

Die Walking by Obadiah M. Pdf

An unforgettable first-person account of surviving the Rwandan genocide and its aftermath Featuring a foreword by Globe and Mail Africa Bureau Chief Geoffrey York In 1994, Obadiah was the thirteen-year-old son of a Hutu pastor, living comfortably in Rwanda and dreaming of becoming a pilot, when violence and bloodshed began to engulf the country. His family soon fled their home, pursued by soldiers and stalked by death and hunger. As the genocide led into a horrific war, Obadiah was forced to survive unrelenting terror and the darkest despair as a refugee, both in neighbouring Zaire and eventually in the American refugee detention system. Obadiah was sustained through these horrors by his faith and the philosophy of ubuntu — finding one’s self through connection with others. In the spirit of Night by Elie Wiesel, Die Walking is one boy’s horrific story of shared humanity in a chaotic world.

The Books of Joel, Obadiah, Jonah, Nahum, Habakkuk and Zephaniah by John D. W. Watts Pdf

The six Old Testament books dealt with in this volume of the Commentary are part of a larger unit originally copied on one scroll and called, for the sake of simplicity, the books of the twelve or minor prophets. The prophetic visions, liturgies and oracles contained in the twelve books were collected over a period of more than 300 years and given their final shape not earlier than the middle of the fifth century BC. In his opening chapter Dr Watts provides the historical and liturgical background to the books and discusses the nature and role of prophecy in worship. In the style established for the series, the NEB translation of the text then follows, divided into brief sections alternating with sections of commentary. The results of Old Testament scholarship and modern theological though are conveyed to the student and the layman in simple language.

Obadiah by Johan Renkema Pdf

In spite of its diminutive size, the book of the minor prophet Obadiah has consistently occasioned major literary-critical, exegetical and hermeneutical questions. Jerome's observation 'the shorter, the more difficult' serves as a useful illustration of the complexity of the work. The present commentary seeks to answer some of the questions surrounding the book and its author on the basis of the literary structure of the transmitted text. The volume makes use for the first time of ancient text divisions gleaned from the Masoretic, Syriac and Greek textual traditions, with the help of which the colometry of the book is established and the larger literary units thereof delimited. The exegetical comments are based, among other things, on recent tradition-historical and linguistic research. The result is a contemporary commentary, accessible to students and scholars alike.
