The Rise of K-Dramas by JaeYoon Park,Ann-Gee Lee Pdf

Korean dramas gained popularity across Asia in the late 1990s, and their global fandom continues to grow. Despite cultural differences, non-Asian audiences find "K-dramas" appealing. They range from historical melodrama and romantic comedy to action, horror, sci-fi and thriller. Devotees pursue an immersive fandom, consuming Korean food, fashion and music, learning Korean to better understand their favorite shows, and travelling to Korea for firsthand experiences. This collection of new essays focuses on the cultural impact of K-drama and its fandom, and on the transformation of identities in the context of regional and global dynamics. Contributors discuss such popular series as Boys over Flowers, My Love from the Star and Descendants of the Sun.

The Dramas of Lajos Walder by Lajos Walder,Agnes Walder Pdf

In the dramatic and tragic years of World War II, the Hungarian poet Lajos Walder was probably looking for a broader expression of his philosophical beliefs than poetry seemed to allow. Following Huxley, Aragon and Celine, he turned to prose. Drawing on his education in Greek and his love of theatre he penned plays with '... insights so pertinent, that they seem universally valid some six and a half decades later'. Lajos Walder (1913-1945) was a well-known poet in 1930s Budapest, but his plays, written in the early 1940s, were not known until 1990 when they were first published in Hungarian and described by a major critic as '... uniquely beautiful creations of an original mind'. Lajos Walder died on 7 May 1945, the day of liberation and just four hours after walking out of the Death Camp of Gunskirchen: he was not yet 32 years of age. These plays should be staged. In the meantime, they may be read in Agnes Walder's fine translations which evoke the essence and mood of her father's time and capture his expressive literary style.

Trials and Tribunals in the Dramas of Heinrich Von Kleist by Kim Fordham Pdf

What makes the trial so appealing as dramatic form? Why do we watch? Is it simply the quest for truth and justice? Or is it much more than that? From the time of Sophocles, the court has fascinated audiences and dramatists alike. Kleist is no exception, as each of his dramas and many of his stories and anecdotes contain a trial of some sort from its most primitive form of hand-to-hand combat in the duel to more conventional legal proceedings in secular, military and ecclesiastical courts. At trial, we desire, whether consciously or unconsciously, to have our own system of beliefs and behaviours affirmed rather than to attempt to achieve justice: self interest prevails at the expense of truth and equity. The focus of this book is the tension between the restoration of dike, the balance of natural order, and the pursuit of truth and justice as impetus behind the trial. With recourse to the concept of legal instrumentalism, which underscores this preference for order over justice in both the law and literature, the author examines Kleist's dramas to determine the extent to which those individuals in positions of power are able to manipulate the proceedings, seeking not justice and truth, but rather the validation of their own particular version of order. The trial, a tool generally thought to be designed to discover truth and to mete out justice, is used instead, in the hands of the powerful, as an instrument of control and degradation.

Chinese Fans of Japanese and Korean Pop Culture by Lu Chen Pdf

How can Japanese popular culture gain numerous fans in China, despite pervasive anti-Japanese sentiment? How is it that there’s such a strong anti-Korean sentiment in Chinese online fan communities when the official Sino-Korean relationship is quite stable before 2016? Avid fans in China are raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding to make gifts to their idols in foreign countries. Tabloid reports on Japanese and Korean celebrities have been known to trigger nationalist protests in China. So, what is the relationship between Chinese fandom of Japanese and Korean popular culture and nationalist sentiment among Chinese youth? Chen discusses how Chinese fans of Japanese and Korean popular culture have formed their own nationalistic discourse since the 1990s. She argues that, as nationalism is constructed from various entangled ideologies, narratives, myths and collective memories, popular culture simply becomes another resource for the construction of nationalism. Fans thus actively select, interpret and reproduce the content of cultural products to suit their own ends. Unlike existing works, which focus on the content of transnational cultural flows in East Asia, this book focuses on the reception and interpretation of the Chinese audience.
