A Book of Cambridge Verse (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Edward Kellett Pdf

Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from In Cap and Gown: Three Centuries of Cambridge Wit IT is my pleasant duty to express my sincere acknowledg ments to all those who have kindly allowed me to reprint their pieces in the present volume. My warmest thanks are also due to the Rev. H. R. Luard, who permitted me to consult documents preserved in the University Registry; to Mr. R. The Cap and Gown in America by Gardner Cotrell Leonard Pdf

Excerpt from The Cap and Gown in America: To Which Is Added an Illustrated Sketch of the Intercollegiate System of Academic Costume The typical American college gown, however, is shown in Type 6, the Oxford Bachelors' gown. It is worn at Harvard, Amherst, Dartmouth, Tufts, Union, Beloit, Lafayette, University of Vermont, Dickinson, Wesleyan, South Western Presbyterian University, New York University, Napa, Livingstone College, Trinity and others. Modified to close in front as shown in Type 6c it is worn at Yale and Williams. The beauty of its workmanship, the fullness yet softness of its lines and draping, it adaptability by proper cutting to the man or woman whose shoulders fill it, have contributed to its wide adoption and made it the true American gown, for which the writer has heard only words of praise. The cap is throughout the Oxford cap, or Mortar Board. The cap with stiff skull part is still used, but has been displaced in best outfits for men by that with a folding skull part, an improvement which admits of carrying easily when off the head and packing compactly at any time. It fits a man's head more comfortably, stays on more firmly and cannot get out of shape unless the flat board is broken. The Works of Victor Hugo (Classic Reprint) by Victor Hugo Pdf

Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church. The English Regalia (Classic Reprint) by Cyril Davenport Pdf

Excerpt from The English Regalia N the summer of 1896 I was allowed, by Her Majesty's gracious permission, to examine and photograph the Regalia out of their cases, and without this privilege it would have been im possible to obtain plates of the excellence and reliability of those illustrating this work, as the light in the Jewel House is most unfavourable. I am also much indebted to the two Keepers of the Regalia who have been the victims of my search after knowledge. General Sir Michael A. S. Biddulph, himself an admirable artist, and his successor, lieut.-general Sir Frederick D. Middleton, c.b., have both most patiently and courteously given me every facility in their power, as well for my photographs as for my sketches, and indeed I believe they have both taken a personal interest in my researches into the history and the details of the decoration of the treasures intrusted to their care. On the occasion of my seeing the Regalia out of their cases I obtained permission to take with me Mr. William Griggs, as I mistrusted my own powers as a photographer, and was anxious to reap the full advantage of the rare occasion and get the best negatives possible. Mr. Griggs succeeded better than I had expected; but nevertheless much artistic work has been necessary in addition, in order to produce the plates in the present book. I feel that I owe Mr. Griggs many thanks for the patience with which he has listened to my various suggestions, and for the skill with which he has carried them out; and I trust that our united labours may have produced illustrations of the Regalia as they now are which may some day have an historic value beyond the artistic one which alone can be claimed for them to-day.
