Excerpt from The Journal of the Franklin Institute: Devoted to Science and the Mechanic Arts; January-June, 1895 As was, perhaps, first stated explicitly, by Liebig, we find that the sources of all forces, powers, energies, in man and animals, are to be found in the food constructed by the plants out of mineral substances under the active energy of the sun's rays, which energy, becoming thus latent, is re awakened by the vital apparatus and directed into useful channels, constructing the whole animal machine, and doing all its work - muscular, thermal, electrical, vital, mental. Excerpt from The Journal of the Franklin Institute, Vol. 99: Devoted to Science and the Mechanic Arts; January to June, 1875 It is estimated that the explosive power of nitro-glycerin is equal to ten times that of gunpowder, and that half a kilogram (11 pounds) would lift from the ground and project a weight of kilograms. The heat evolved in the reaction is about calories for each kilogram. This same kilogram of nitro-glycerin, exploding in a closed space having a volume of one liter, develops a theoretical pressure of atmospheres, a temperature of degrees, and a quantity of heat equal to calories. Excerpt from The Journal of the Franklin Institute, Vol. 155: Devoted to Science and the Mechanic Arts Safe rupture operation. No device is universally safe unless the arc and explosive effect, coincident with the rup turing of the circuit under any condition for which it is intended, is entirely suppressed or eliminated. It should not only prevent damage to extraneous devices, but should also be non-destructive to all connected parts other than those directly operative. Newton and Galileo before him studied with the greatest care the simplest cases Of motion and matter, such as the impact Of one body against another, a' body falling towards the earth or thrown up away from the earth, an arrow or bolt shot from a cross-bow, etc.' Both these great philosophers sought to express their Observations in simple form, and to formulate certain laws or postulates. Excerpt from The Journal of the Franklin Institute, Vol. 154: Devoted to Science and the Mechanic Arts It would be out of place to do more than glance at one or two of the main points in preparing and examining sec tions, because the subject has been carefully treated by Stead, Le Chatelier, Sauveur and many others. One of the most important points is the preparation of the alloy or metal, because its final structure will in almost every case depend upon its rate of cooling, the uniformity of cooling, prevention of oxidation, etc., and, in the case of an alloy, upon the thorough mixing of its constituent metals when liquid. As a general rule, the slower the cooling the larger the structure. In many metals and alloys, this holds good not only during solidification, but also afterwards, because profound changes often take place long after solidification. As examples, one immediately thinks of iron and its alloys, of the bronzes and of the brasses. As an example of the necessity for guarding against oxidation, we need only con sider copper and the rapidity with which its oxide diffuses through it. Excerpt from The Journal of the Franklin Institute, Vol. 167: Devoted to Science and the Mechanic Arts; January-June, 1909 Continental United States has been but imperfectly explored, but in Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico exploited deposits maintain an iron and steel industry approximating in capacity the product of Sweden, and show large reserves of available mineral. The abundance of our minerals, the comparatively low cost at which they can be obtained and transported, and the high rate of labor which has prevailed in this country, have retarded the introduction of many economies, but in the iron industry waste ful methods have been modified, ores formerly refused are utilized, advances in metallurgy reduce the fuel and labor cost per ton of metal produced, and an effort to conserve resources is growing in appreciation.
