The Laughing Cavalier by Baroness Orczy Pdf

The Laughing Cavalier is the first book by Baroness Emma Orczy in the Scarlet Pimpernel series, but was actually the 5th one written (first published in 1914). The story is set in the year 1624 (a hundred years before The Scarlet Pimpernel). Partially inspired by Frans Hals' painting The Laughing Cavalier, Hals is actually a character in the story. Unlike the later books in the Scarlet Pimpernel series, which are set in France and England, this book is set in Holland. The heroine Gilda accidentally overhears of a plot against Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange. Gilda's brother, one of the plotters, catches her and orders her not to tell anyone what she has heard. As Gilda is on the prince's side (unlike her brother Nicolaes), she is torn regarding whether or not to notify him. Nicolaes, being in cahoots with the villainous Stoutenburg, makes plans to kidnap his sister and keep her out of the way until the plot is completed. The half-dutch hero "Diogenes" and his friends "Socrates" and "Pythagoras" find themselves in the thick of the plot, as they are hired to kidnap Gilda. But as Diogenes slowly comes to a knowledge of the facts behind the kidnapping, he begins to question his allegiances and responsibilities. What results is a masterful battle of wits and wills between the villain Stoutenburg and the hero Diogenes. Black & Gold House of Books strives to provide the best quality literature at a fair price. The Laughing Cavalier by Emmuska Orczy Pdf

Baroness Emma Magdolna Rozalia Maria Jozefa Borbala "Emmuska" Orczy de Orczi (23 September 1865 - 12 November 1947) was a British novelist, playwright and artist of Hungarian noble origin. She is most known for her series of novels featuring the Scarlet Pimpernel. Set in Holland in 1623/1624, The Laughing Cavalier, by British novelist Baroness Orczy, revolves around Percy Blake, a foreign adventurer and ancestor of the Scarlet Pimpernel who goes by the name Diogenes. Diogenes, we are told by Orczy, is the real subject of the famous painting The Laughing Cavalier by Frans Hals. The son of an English Nobleman and a Dutch woman, his father abandoned his mother after Diogenes was born, and he was brought up by Hals in Haarlem. He has spent his life fighting in various battles as a mercenary for hire, but now, along with his two sidekicks - fellow 'philosophers' - Socrates and Pythagoras, he is back in Haarlem, penniless and looking for entertainment. The book is followed by The First Sir Percy. (wikipedia.org"

Baroness Orczy's The Scarlet Pimpernel by Sally Dugan Pdf

Since its publication in 1905, The Scarlet Pimpernel has experienced global success, not only as a novel but in theatrical and film adaptations. Sally Dugan charts the history of Baroness Orczy's elusive hero, from the novel's origins through its continuing afterlife, including postmodern appropriations of the myth. Drawing on archival research in Britain, the United States and Australia, her study shows for the first time how Orczy's nationalistic superhero was originally conceived as an anarchist Pole plotting against Tsarist Russia, rather than a counter-revolutionary Englishman. Dugan explores the unique blend of anarchy, myth and magic that emerged from the story's astonishing and complex beginnings and analyses the enduring elements of the legend. To his creator, the Pimpernel was not simply a swashbuckling hero but an English gentleman spreading English values among benighted savages. Dugan investigates the mystery of why this imperialist crusader has not only survived the decline of the meta-narratives surrounding his birth, but also continues to enthrall a multinational audience. Offering readers insights into the Pimpernel's appearances in print, in film and on the stage, Dugan provides a nuanced picture of the trope of the Scarlet Pimpernel and an explanation of the phenomenon's durability.

Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XLII THE FIGHT IN THE DOORWAY It seemed to Stoutenburg that from the back of the hut there came the sound of bustle and activity: he thought that mayhap Beresteyn had had the good idea of making the sledge ready for departure, and he called out loudly to his friend. It was a mocking voice, however, that rose in response: "Was your Magnificence perchance looking for me?" Out of the mist which still hung round the small building Diogenes' tall figure suddenly loomed before the Lord of Stoutenburg. He was standing in the doorway of the hut, with his back to it; one hand -- the right one -- was thrust inside his doublet, the left was on the hilt of his sword; his battered hat was tilted rakishly above his brow and he was regarding his approaching enemy with a look of keen amusement and of scorn. At first Stoutenburg thought that his fevered fancy was playing his eyes a weird and elusive trick, then as the reality of what he saw fully burst upon his senses he uttered a loud and hoarse cry like a savage beast that has been wounded "Plepshurk! smeerlap!" he cried fiercely. "Rogue! Villain! Menial! Varlet! and all that you care to name me, my lord 1" quoth the philosopher lightly. "and entirely at your service." "Jan!" cried Stoutenburg, "Jan! In the name of hell where are you?" "Not very far, my lord," rejoined the other. "Jan is a brave soldier but he was no match for three philosophers. even though one of them at first was trussed like a fowl. Jan stuck to his post, my lord, remember that," he added more seriously, "even when all your other followers and friends were scattered to the winds like a crowd of mice at the approach of a cat. We did not hurt Jan because he is a brave soldier, but we tied him down lest he ran to get...

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy Annotated Edition by Baroness Orczy Pdf

The Scarlet Pimpernel was initially rejected by publishers, when Orczy finished it in 1903. Undeterred, she reinvented the book as a play, which went on to be successful, leading to the publication of the book in 1905. The book was an instant success with the public, relieving Orczy of her financial troubles, but critics found it superficial, classist, and ultimately little more than a disposable lark. And yet, the public took to the book, looking past its overt sympathies with the noble class, and their demand for more such adventure stories led Orczy to write a slew of Pimpernel sequels over the next forty years. These include The Laughing Cavalier (1914), The First Sir Percy (1921), Pimpernel and Rosemary (1924), and The Scarlet Pimpernel Looks at the World (1933).
