Role of Transportation in the Industrial Revolution by Rick Szostak Pdf

Szostak develops a model that establishes causal links between transportation and industrialization and shows how improvements in transportation could have a beneficial effect on an economy such as that of eighteenth-century England. This model shows the Industrial Revolution to involve four primary phenomena: increased regional specialization, the emergence of new industries, an expanding scale of production, and an accelerated rate of technological innovation. Through detailed analysis, Szostak explicates the effects of the different systems of transportation in France and England on the four components of the Industrial Revolution. He outlines the development in late eighteenth-century England of a reliable system of all-weather transportation, made up of turnpike roads and canals, that was far superior to the system in France at the same period. He goes on to examine in detail the iron, textile, and pottery industries in each country, focusing on the effect of the quality of available transportation on the decisions of individual entrepreneurs and innovators. Szostak shows that in every case these industries were more highly developed in England than in France.

Homicide by Joan Swart,Lee Mellor Pdf

Forensic psychology plays an increasingly important role in criminal investigations and legal decision-making. Homicide: A Forensic Psychology Casebook guides readers through the practical aspects of homicide cases across the entire criminal justice system, from the investigative process to the criminal trial process, and beyond. Each chapter contains a description and analysis of selected cases and offenders, and provides a crime narrative and offender narrative to illustrate the underlying theory and practical considerations of homicide investigations. Criminal justice students and practitioners alike will benefit from the comprehensive scope of this text. In order to ensure fair and efficient criminal justice practices in the field of forensic investigation, there is still a need for conformity and standardization of sound protocols and approaches based on improved knowledge and education. This book is part of that effort to understand homicidal behavior and offenders better in order to prevent similar crimes.

The Highland Clans of Scotland; Their History and Traditions by Todd George Eyre Pdf

THOUGH the Scottish Highlander is proverbially tenacious of the memories of his race, and almost invariably well-informed regarding the descent and relationship of his clan, there has hitherto been a notorious lack of collected information regarding the individual histories and traditions of the Highland tribes. Of several of the clans there are admirable monographs in existence, and for the general history of the Gael one may consult books like Skene's Celtic Scotland and Browne's History of the Highlands; but in the way of a collection of histories of the separate clans nothing sufficiently detailed has been available. The present work is designed to supply in convenient shape information regarding each clan which is only to be found in widely scattered quarters elsewhere. On thorny points, like the chiefship of the MacDonalds, the headship of Clan Chattan, and the relationship of the MacArthurs and the Campbells, it is hoped that the facts have been stated without bias. It is hoped also that, while it would be impossible, within even a generous compass, to furnish complete narratives of all that is known of each clan, the net has been cast sufficiently wide to include all events of real importance, and to show their relationship, causes, and effects in a reasoned narrative., With only a very few alterations the list of septs put forward by Mr. Frank Adams in his excellent compendium of the Highland Clans, Septs, and Regiments has been adopted, and it is hoped that the reproduction of the spirited colour prints from Mclan's celebrated Clans of the Scottish Highlands, now almost unobtainable, will add a further feature of interest...
