Trailer Park Elegy by Cornelia Hoogland Pdf

In response to her brother's sudden death, Cornelia Hoogland explores the shift in gravity his dramatic absence creates. Set on the Salish Sea on Vancouver Island's east coast, Trailer Park Elegy reaches back two thousand years to the First Peoples, as well as to the brother whose delight was summers spent at Deep Bay. Hoogland looks to her child-experiences of death, as well as to literature, chaos theory, dark matter, geological time and the effect of noise pollution on whales. She turns grief round and round, enlarges it, pushes beyond received ideas of closure and grief's stages. Death is not only part of life; the dead assign their unfinished work to the living. Hoogland's narrator puts in the time. Listens. Attends. But the responsibility for connection belongs as much to the dead as to the living. The book's form, a long poem, provides thematic coherence for the multiple contingencies that disturb the narrator's present. Like keeping balls up in the air, Hoogland expertly catches and tosses, thus sustaining her imaginative energies throughout the book. Here she is, contemplating the cliché that life flashes before the eyes of the dying, or questioning the memories stored in her body like trauma or fat, when suddenly there she is, fifty years earlier, constructing the highway at the accident site. The reader participates in Hoogland's excavations as she leans in, digs up an absurdity, hits a fault line. Similarly, she inquires deeply into her brother's life, listening for what he reveals. Through spare, never-sentimental language, Hoogland's lyric resources are adequate to human loss and suffering. "I see reflected in my daughters' faces / the story my brother animates. / He opens his hands, / shapes a funnel his life / pours through." "Part emotional excavation and part memorial, Trailer Park Elegy is a deeply moving meditation on how to be present when "[t]he worst has already happened". Retracing her brother's steps in the wake of his untimely passing, Cornelia Hoogland attends to grief until "the field of his death / becomes my field", and little by little, her brother's life overlaps with her own as a kind of dark matter. An intensely poignant, heart-rending read." -Jim Johnstone, author of The Chemical Life

Air-proof Green by Maleea Acker Pdf

Poems in Maleea Acker's second collection range over continents and countries, asking an essential question for our time: How do we live in the world? The poems seek always to approach that threshold between human and natural worlds, attending to what can be seen and sensed with a fine ear and eye. We meet one another at the threshold, through a "splice of intimacy," displaced, the poet says, finding temporary homes and intimacies with one another and with all living things.

Put Your Hand in Mine by Elaine Woo Pdf

"Put Your Hand in Mine dips your hand in a subtly humorous, surreal paint pot of behaviours forming the rainbow of social good. An archetypal ego pinnacles in pride, plummets in valleys of rage, triggering the explosion of a light bomb. A boy shooter has a gun--his hand--poised. The poet recipient of his "bullets" melts them into lead for her poems. When stuck in a well of depression, a crack is found in the stonework, an idea seeps in to rope up or down. Emotions peak, particularly in post #MeToo interactions where leering at the office water cooler is met with a feminine mask of a smile, as a beleaguered woman grinds her heel into the perpetrator's instep, and contemplation natural, when iconic Barbie's friends, Hispanic Teresa and African American Christie bear unrealistically Caucasian features. You'll laugh when a pained hen berates three mallards. When you put your hand in the poet's you'll be tickled to find wisdom, too, in unexpected places."--

The Lost Letters by Catherine Greenwood Pdf

Poetry. Atmospherically light and stylistically expansive--poems that regard our givens as a gift. At the centre of THE LOST LETTERS is a sequence of radically diverse poems based on the story of Heloise and Abelard, truly lovers in a dangerous time, the twelfth century. The raw material is heavy, tension between flesh and spirit being the serious issue carried forward from the twelfth century into the twenty-first. But Greenwood's deft and delicate handling of scenarios of love requited but balked becomes a perceptive reading--extraordinarily inventive and constantly surprising--of contemporary secular society.

Into The Heart Of The Country by Pauline Holdstock Pdf

Longlisted for the 2011 Scotiabank Giller Prize Set in the eighteenth century, in what is now Manitoba, this unflinching and powerful novel takes the reader deep into unexplored territory. Molly Norton, mixed-blood daughter of Governor Moses Norton, is ill-prepared for the ordeal fate has in store. Dressed in English clothes unsuited to the harsh conditions at the Prince of Wales Fort and forbidden to practice the traditional skills of her mother’s people, Molly bears witness to her father’s increasingly tyrannical rule. Governor Norton is suspicious of every man, but particularly resentful of Matonabbee, the esteemed hunter and Dene captain, whom he once considered his brother. But it is the explorer Samuel Hearne who receives the brunt of Norton’s temper when, returning from his expedition, he sets his sights on Molly. In the days that follow, larger events unfold and every man, woman and child at the fort is confronted by forces greater than themselves. Allegiances are both broken and tragically upheld as one of history’s cruel ironies takes shape in the harsh ancestral landscape from which Molly descends.

Take Us to Your Chief by Drew Hayden Taylor Pdf

A forgotten Haudenosaunee social song beams into the cosmos like a homing beacon for interstellar visitors. A computer learns to feel sadness and grief from the history of atrocities committed against First Nations. A young Native man discovers the secret to time travel in ancient petroglyphs. Drawing inspiration from science fiction legends like Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury, Drew Hayden Taylor frames classic science-fiction tropes in an Aboriginal perspective. The nine stories in this collection span all traditional topics of science fiction--from peaceful aliens to hostile invaders; from space travel to time travel; from government conspiracies to connections across generations. Yet Taylor's First Nations perspective draws fresh parallels, likening the cultural implications of alien contact to those of the arrival of Europeans in the Americas, or highlighting the impossibility of remaining a "good Native" in such an unnatural situation as a space mission. Infused with Native stories and variously mysterious, magical and humorous, Take Us to Your Chief is the perfect mesh of nostalgically 1950s-esque science fiction with modern First Nations discourse.

Against the contemporary backdrop of intensified capitalist fascism, toxic nationalism, and climate disaster, the figure Jejune asks, how have I come to make home out of unrecognizability. Marked by and through diasporic life, Jejune declares, I was not myself. I am not myself. My self resembles something having nothing to do with me.

Once They Were Hats by Frances Backhouse Pdf

Beavers, those icons of industriousness, have been gnawing down trees, building dams, shaping the land and creating critical habitat in North America for at least a million years. They were once one of the continent's most ubiquitous mammals. Then the European fur traders arrived. In Once They Were Hats, Frances Backhouse examines humanity's 15,000-year relationship with Castor canadensis, and the beaver's even older relationship with North American landscapes and ecosystems. Along the way she discovers how we can learn to live with beavers as they return.
