McGill University by Stanley Brice Frost Pdf

James McGill is an important figure in Canada's history in his own right. The bequest made in 1813 for the founding of a university of which one college was to bear his name only increased that significance. The political tensions of Lower Canada delayed implementation of his plans for sixteen years; and then it was only by incorporating the Montreal Medical Institution as Faculty of Medicine that in 1829 a beginning could be made. Thirty years after his death, the Faculty of Arts was finally established, but not until the trustee-body known as the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning was moved from Quebec City to Montreal and established as its board of governors did McGill College begin to revive and hold out promise of a respectable future.

Compositional Crossroads by Eleanor Stubley Pdf

McGill University's Faculty of Music - now the Schulich School - has been a centre of new music in Canada for decades, helping to shape contemporary composition, electro-acoustic research, performance, and sound recording. Compositional Crossroads focuses on McGill's location in a culturally dynamic city and shows how the interplay between place, community, identity, and memory and individuals, faculty, and students created institutional pathways that have lead to an explosion of new music activity. Visionary deans, composers, musicologists, and students associated with the Faculty of Music between 1970-2004 offer insights into the early contributions of Istvan Anhalt, the birth of the Electronic Music Studio and McGill Records, the importance of visiting composer-teachers, opportunities for composer/performer collaborations, the development of performing spaces and ensembles, and new ways of considering sonic creativity. Several essays are devoted to major composers who taught at the school, including Bengt Hambraeus, alcides lanza, Brian Cherney, Bruce Mather, John Rea, and Denys Bouliane. Contributors include Robin Elliott (Toronto), alcides lanza (emeritus, McGill), John Rea (McGill), Paul Pedersen (emeritus, Toronto), James Harley (Guelph), Laurie Radford (City University, London), Bruce Mather (McGill), Pamela Jones (author, Montreal), Neil Middleton (Montreal), Steven Huebner (McGill), Jérôme Blais (Dalhousie), and Patrick Levesque (Université de Montreal).

The Music of Joni Mitchell by Lloyd Whitesell Pdf

Joni Mitchell is one of the foremost singer-songwriters of the late twentieth century. Yet despite her reputation, influence, and cultural importance, a detailed appraisal of her musical achievement is still lacking. Whitesell presents a through exploration of Mitchell's musical style, sound, and structure in order to evaluate her songs from a musicological perspective. His analyses are conceived within a holistic framework that takes account of poetic nuance, cultural reference, and stylistic evolution over a long, adventurous career. Mitchell's songs represent a complex, meticulously crafted body of work. The Music of Joni Mitchell offers a comprehensive survey of her output, with many discussions of individual songs, organized by topic rather than chronology. Individual chapters each explore a different aspect of her craft, such as poetic voice, harmony, melody, and large-scale form. A separate chapter is devoted to the central theme of personal freedom, as expressed through diverse symbolic registers of the journey quest, bohemianism, creative license, and spiritual liberation. Previous accounts of Mitchell's songwriting have tended to favor her poetic vision, expansive verse structures, and riveting vocal delivery. Whitesell fills out this account with special attention to musical technique, showing how such traits as complex or conflicting sonorities, dualities of harmonic mode, dialectical tensions of texture and register, intricately layered instrumental figuration, and a variable vocal persona are all essential to her distinctive identity as a songwriter. The Music of Joni Mitchell develops a set of conceptual tools geared specifically to Mitchell's songs, in order to demonstrate the extent of her technical innovation in the pop song genre, to give an account of the formal sophistication and rhetorical power characterizing her work as a whole, and to provide grounds for the recognition of her intellectual stature as a composer within her chosen field.

Musical Canada by John Beckwith,Frederick A. Hall Pdf

The foremost historian of Canadian music and musical life, Helmut Kallmann is the inspiration for this volume. Its twenty-three contributions, written by prominent composers and writers representing many different regions and both national languages, present a cross-section of current work in historical research, bibliography, analysis, criticism, and creative composition. Among the subjects covered are bibliographical and historian research on recent musical findings from New France and on early musical activities in various Canadian cities and regions; critical appraisals of Canadian composers and performers; and surveys of Canadian musical organizations and their programs. Four short compositions have been written especially for the volume. The title is drawn from two early Canadian musical periodicals, the English-language Musical Canada and the French-language Le Canada musical. As those journals did for their time, so this volume provides a contemporary overview of Canadian music and music scholarship.
