The Economics of Mutual Fund Markets: Competition Versus Regulation by William Baumol,Stephen M. Goldfeld,Lilli A. Gordon,Frank-Michael Köhn Pdf

The original impetus for this research was provided several years ago by a request to assist Counsel for Fidelity Management and Research Corporation in analyzing the mutual fund industry, with particular emphasis on money market mutual funds. We were asked to focus our efforts on the mechanism by which the advisory fees of mutual funds are determined. This request arose out of litigation that challenged the level of advisory fees charged to the shareholders of the Fidelity Cash Reserve Fund. Subsequently, we were asked to provide similar assistance to Counsel for T. Rowe Price Associates regarding the fees charged to shareholders of their Prime Reserve Fund. 1940, advisers of Under the Investment Company Act of mutual funds have a fiduciary duty with respect to the level of fees they may charge a fund's shareholders. Since the passage of the Investment Company Act, there have been numerous lawsuits brought by shareholders alleging that advisory fees were excessive. In these lawsuits, the courts have failed to provide a set of standards for determining when such fees are excessive. Instead, they have relied on arbitrary and frequently ill-defined criteria for jUdging the reasonableness of fees. This failure to apply economic-based tests for evaluating the fee structure of mutual funds provided the motivation for the present book, which undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the economics of the mutual fund industry.

The Management of Mutual Funds by G.V. Satya Sekhar Pdf

This book provides insight into the multi-dimensional process of coordinating and supervising mutual funds. This book focuses on the management of mutual funds within financial markets, with an emphasis on how corporate governance and benchmarking influence asset and portfolio management. Chapters explore four important aspects of this process in particular detail: corporate governance, benchmarking, asset management and portfolio management. The author shows that the mutual fund industry provides wider access to payment systems and to a savings safety-net that operates similarly to deposit insurance. Furthermore, he demonstrates that the Indian government’s focus is on establishing the right of every person to have access to affordable basic financial services offered by banks and non-banks.

Guide to Hedge Funds by Philip Coggan Pdf

Hedge fund managers are the new "masters of the universe." The best earn more than $1 billion a year and are so sought after that they can afford to turn investor money away. The funds they run have, to some extent, established an alternative financial system, replacing banks as lenders to risky companies, acting as providers of liquidity to markets and insurers of last resort for risks such as hurricanes, and replacing pension funds and mutual funds as the most significant investors in many companies—even in some cases buying companies outright. The revised and updated second edition of this lively guide sheds much needed light on the world of hedge funds by explaining what they are, what they do, who the main players are, the regulations affecting them, the arguments as to whether they are a force for good or bad, and what the future holds for them. "More people have a view about hedge funds than know about them. Philip Coggan bridges the knowledge gap in this clearly written guide. Every chapter is a goldmine of information and analysis, making it easy to learn about hedge funds. No investor, no investment adviser, no trustee, no dinner-table conversationalist should express opinions on the sector until they have read this book." —Elroy Dimson, BGI Professor of Investment Management, London Business School "While much has been written about hedge fund strategies and their (occasionally spectacular) failures, we have not yet seen a general primer to help the investor understand the world of hedge funds. Philip Coggan presents us with exactly that—a well-written, succinct summary of a world we all need to understand better." —Rob Arnott, Chairman of Research Affiliates and Editor Emeritus of the Financial Analysts Journal
