Out of the Sun by Esi Edugyan Pdf

An insightful exploration and moving meditation on identity, art, and belonging from one of the most celebrated writers of the last decade. What happens when we begin to consider stories at the margins, when we grant them centrality? How does that complicate our certainties about who we are, as individuals, as nations, as human beings? Through the lens of visual art, literature, film, and the author’s lived experience, Out of the Sun examines Black histories in art, offering new perspectives to challenge us. In this groundbreaking, reflective, and erudite book, two-time Scotiabank Giller Prize winner and internationally bestselling author Esi Edugyan illuminates myriad varieties of Black experience in global culture and history. Edugyan combines storytelling with analyses of contemporary events and her own personal story in this dazzling first major work of non-fiction.

Capital Culture by Neil Harris Pdf

American art museums flourished in the late twentieth century, and the impresario leading much of this growth was J. Carter Brown, director of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, from 1969 to 1992. Along with S. Dillon Ripley, who served as Smithsonian secretary for much of this time, Brown reinvented the museum experience in ways that had important consequences for the cultural life of Washington and its visitors as well as for American museums in general. In Capital Culture, distinguished historian Neil Harris provides a wide-ranging look at Brown’s achievement and the growth of museum culture during this crucial period. Harris combines his in-depth knowledge of American history and culture with extensive archival research, and he has interviewed dozens of key players to reveal how Brown’s showmanship transformed the National Gallery. At the time of the Cold War, Washington itself was growing into a global destination, with Brown as its devoted booster. Harris describes Brown’s major role in the birth of blockbuster exhibitions, such as the King Tut show of the late 1970s and the National Gallery’s immensely successful Treasure Houses of Britain, which helped inspire similarly popular exhibitions around the country. He recounts Brown’s role in creating the award-winning East Building by architect I. M. Pei and the subsequent renovation of the West building. Harris also explores the politics of exhibition planning, describing Brown's courtship of corporate leaders, politicians, and international dignitaries. In this monumental book Harris brings to life this dynamic era and exposes the creation of Brown's impressive but costly legacy, one that changed the face of American museums forever.

Durer's Journeys by Susan Foister,Peter van den Brink Pdf

Albrecht Durer's (1471-1528) travels across Europe in the early Renaissance led to a fascinating interchange of ideas with his fellow artists, both northern and southern. This book explores Durer's extensive influence on his contemporaries and his sources of inspiration, bringing together paintings, drawings, sculptures, glass, and prints by artists he may have encountered along the way. It also examines the complex development of Durer's own status as an artist entrepreneur and innovator in artistic theory.0 Durer's journal records his pursuit of commissions and details his visits to Italy, Antwerp, Cologne, Brussels, Ghent, and Bruges. During this time he produced a trove of landscapes, portraits, and animal drawings, and studies for larger projects, such as the painting of Saint Jerome that would become his most copied work. Durer's travels informed some of his most exciting and engaging works, and their visual legacy extended far beyond his lifetime and throughout the continent.00Exhibition: The National Gallery, London, UK(06.03.?13.06.2021) / Suermondt-Ludwig Museum, Aachen, Germany (18.07.-24.10.2021).

The National Gallery in Wartime by Suzanne Bosman Pdf

"In August 1939 the National Gallery's Collection was in danger. War was imminent, with the grim possibility looming of saturation bombing of London. Days before war was declared, the National Gallery closed its doors to the public and secretly evacuated the paintings. The collection was initially hidden in selected country houses, but later relocated for permanent storage in the cavernous chambers of a disused quarry, deep in the Welsh mountains." "Back in Trafalgar Square, the gallery - now empty - stayed open to house a popular series of music concerts fronted by internationally acclaimed pianist, Myra Hess. Despite significant risk the gallery remained open throughout the Blitz, also opening a canteen and temporary display space, bringing culture and solace to Londoners." "This book brings together previously unseen material from the National Gallery's archive with black and white photographs in an account of how the National Gallery functioned during this eventful period."--BOOK JACKET.

Monochrome by Lelia Packer,Jennifer Sliwka Pdf

Painting "without color" has long held a fascination for artists. In this striking and original book, the authors explore how and why artists from the 15th century to the present have chosen to paint in black, white, and shades of gray. Sometimes artists used trompe l'oeil monochromatic effects to represent other media, such as sculpture, prints, or photography; others have consciously limited their palette as a means of re-focusing the viewer's attention, while contemporary artists such as Gerhard Richter and Bridget Riley have often found inspiration in pushing black and white to its limits, and in new directions. The authors trace the history of this art form, from the symbolism of sacred images in medieval church ritual - epitomized in Netherlandish painting from the 15th century onwards by Hans Memling and Jan van Eyck - to the modern era and the work of artists such as Josef Albers and Ellsworth Kelly.
