Early New England Schools (Classic Reprint) by Walter Herbert Small Pdf

Excerpt from Early New England Schools The order is that of the logical development of the schools through their various transition periods, with such excerpts from the laws as show the growth in legal power. The motive for the work lies in the following statement in Mr. George H. Martin's preface to his book, The Evolution of the Massachusetts School System. He says, This book is not a history for such a work the materials are ample and only await the approach of some one who has time and the inclination to use them. The curiosity aroused by that statement led to the first record, that to the second, until curiosity became a disease. However, this is not a history, but rather the materials out of which history may be made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Rise of the High School in Massachusetts by Alexander James Inglis Pdf

Excerpt from The Rise of the High School in Massachusetts: Teachers College, Columbia University Contributions to Educations, No; 45 The high school in Massachusetts had its beginning in the third decade of the nineteenth century. Within that period fall the estab lishment of the English Classical (high) School of Boston in 1821, the founding of the Boston High School for Girls in 1826, and the passage of the act in 1827 which formed the basis of all subsequent legislation affecting the high school in Massachusetts. In a wider sense, however, we must trace the origin of the Massachusetts high school and secondary education in the nine teenth century back to an earlier period, and, to gain a conception of the meaning and extent of the change then brought about, we must examine the conditions prior to the nineteenth century and antecedent to the beginning of the high school movement proper. Such an examination will involve some consideration of the colonial Latin grammar school and of the academies which prae tically dominated secondary education at the beginning of the nineteenth century, together with a consideration of the public school system in general. N o exhaustive treatment of these movements can be attempted here, but sufficient attention must be given to them to afford a knowledge of the situation immedi ately preceding the period with which this discussion is concerned. Abstract of the Massachusetts School Returns by Massachusetts Board Of Education Pdf

Excerpt from Abstract of the Massachusetts School Returns: For 1839-40 Another very important requisite in a teacher is a skill in governing a school. Unless good order is kept in school, there can be but little improvement. This is a faculty, the deficiency of which can never be made up by the application of corporal punishment. Children will. Very soon learn whether order is to be observed or not. And since we have, in all our Common Schools, those who are incapable of governing themselves, they must be governed, or there is an end to the improvement of that school. Your committee feel, therefore, con strained to direct your attention to these qualifications in a teacher, because they feel that our schools have suffered in consequence of deficiencies in these particulars. They have called your attention to these particulars, in hope that the several districts would instruct their prudential committees to make due inquiries concerning the character of the individuals who apply for our schools helbra they employ them. Historical Development of the New York State High School System (Classic Reprint) by Walter John Gifford Pdf

Excerpt from Historical Development of the New York State High School System Since this general survey was made, only one exhaustive and intensive study has appeared, dealing with a considerable number of schools. This is the monograph of Dr Alexander Inglis, The Rise of the High School in Massachusetts. Doctor Inglis limited his study largely to the period previous to 1860 and, aside from indicating the progress of legislation in the state, he established conclusively the number of schools founded in that period and the nature of the curriculum. This was made possible by a detailed research through the local town records and reports of school committees which in Massachusetts have been preserved with great care.
