Pioneer Work in the Alps of New Zealand by Arthur P. Harper Pdf

Excerpt from Pioneer Work in the Alps of New Zealand: A Record of the First Exploration of the Chief Glaciers and Ranges of the Southern Alps Of adventures we had, of course, enough to satisfy any ordi nary human beings, but they were so bound up with the work that we were apt to take them as a matter of course. I have, however, in recording our progress, described a sufficient num ber to convey an idea of the conditions under which the work had to be carried out. If the life was rough, I fear my account of it is rougher, but hope that the facts here set down may be none the less interesting because they appear in somewhat crude language. Should any fellow member of the Alpine Club decide to come and climb our peaks, I shall be only too glad to give him all the information in my power, and trust that he will take this offer seriously, and write to me should he need advice. The Alps by W. A. B. Coolidge Pdf

Excerpt from The Alps: In Nature and History The following pages are not intended to be either an exhaustive description of the Alps or a series of impressions of travel amongst them. But they do claim to offer to the reader an account of the most interesting features presented by the Alps from several points of view, and an account that is based on the personal experiences of over forty years' wandering through almost every district of the great chain. No attempt has been made to explain how the Alps came into being, or how in the course of long ages their outlines and valleys may have changed. They are taken as they exist in the early twentieth century, and treated as practically unchangeable. In the early chapters they are looked at from the physical side, - their extent, their pastures, their glaciers, their flowers, and their beasts and birds being successively described. Then we come to Man in the Alps, first man in himself as a human being actually inhabiting various districts of the chain, speaking divers languages, and professing several forms of belief, and next man as the subject of political vicissitudes of history, which naturally have affected his home as well as himself. In particular, an attempt has been made to trace out the political or territorial history of the chief summits of the Alps. The Alps (Classic Reprint) by Arnold Lunn Pdf

Excerpt from The Alps For the early chapters of this book I have consulted, amongst other authorities, the books mentioned in the bibliography on pp. 251- 254. It would, however, be ungracious if I failed to acknowledge my indebtedness to that most readable of historians, Mr. Gribble, and to his books, The Early Mountaineers (Fisher Unwin) and The Story of Alpine Climbing (Nelson). Mr. Gribble and his publisher, Mr. Unwin, have kindly allowed me to quote passages translated from the works of the pioneers. Two friends, experts in the practice and history of mountaineering, have read the proofs and helped me with numerous suggestions. The Alps From End to End by William Martin Conway Pdf

Excerpt from The Alps From End to End: With 52 Full-Paged Illustrations Previously mountaineering was one Of the best forms of training for a traveller, and indeed supplied, for busy persons whose annual holiday must be Short, experi ence Of all the Charms, excitements, and delights which reward the explorer Of distant and unknown regions Of the earth. The Object of the journey now to be described was to discover whether the time had not come when a return might be made to the habits Of Alpine pioneers. Of course the mystery is gone from the Alps, how completely none but climbers know. Almost every mountain and point of View of even third-rate importance has been ascended, most by many routes. Almost every gap between two peaks has been traversed as a pass. The publications of some dozen mountaineer ing societies have recorded these countless expeditions in rows Of volumes Of appalling length. Of late years vigorous attempts have been made to co-ordinate this mass Of material in the form Of Climbers' Guides, dealing with particular districts, wherein every peak and pass is dealt with in strict geographical succession and every different route and all the variations Of each route are set forth, with references to the volumes in which they have been described at length by their discoverers. Nearly half the Alps has been treated in this manner, but the work has taken fourteen years, and of course the whole requires periodic revision. Life of Man on the High Alps (Classic Reprint) by Angelo Mosso Pdf

Excerpt from Life of Man on the High Alps On the intimation Of the acquiescence of the Ministry I went to Ivrea where the Alpine regiment was stationed. My errand being made known, a number of soldiers immediately Offered to join the expedition to the glaciers of Monte Rosa. I shall Often have occasion to mention by name those who accompanied me; I take, however, this early opportunity of remarking that their behaviour and discipline were worthy of all praise, and of giving expression to my feelings of admiration for the sterling qualities Of these humble comrades of mine, to whom likewise my heartiest thanks are due. The first month, from the roth Of June to the r1th Of July, 1894, was devoted to preliminary researches with the object of ascertaining the physio logical conditions of the soldiers. As it was necessary to know what was their power Of resistance to fatigue at ordinary elevations, I let them march with arms and baggage from Ivrea to Turin, a distance of 60 kilometres. I had purposely chosen some soldiers who were very strong and others of average strength: these I divided into two squads. I started with one squad and made the ascent at a slow rate Of progress, about metres per week. The other division climbed up to the summit of Monte Rosa rapidly, em ploying only three days, the rest being by that time installed in the Regina Margherita Hut, awaiting their arrival. This arrangement was made with the intent of discovering the effect of slow and rapid changes of altitude on the organism. Scrambles Amongst the Alps in the Years 1860-69 (Classic Reprint) by Edward Whymper Pdf

Excerpt from Scrambles Amongst the Alps in the Years 1860-69 In endeavouring to make the book of some use to those who may wish to go mountain-scrambling, whether in the Alps or else where, undue prominence, perhaps, has been given to our mistakes and failures; and it will doubtless be pointed out that our practice must have been bad if the principles which are laid down are sound, or that the principles must be unsound if the practice was good. The reason is obvious - we were not immaculate. Our blunders are not held up to be admired, or to be imitated, but to be avoided. Wanderings Among the High Alps (Classic Reprint) by Alfred Wills Pdf

Excerpt from Wanderings Among the High Alps It has always appeared to me that ladies might see much more of the grander scenery of the High Alps than they usually do and it will be a pleasure to me, if I have succeeded in showing, by the instances recorded in the following pages, how much it is really practicable, with due care and suficient precautions, for one of the gentler sex to undertake. The expedition which forms the subject of Chapter II is as feasible for any other lady, as for the lady who actually performed it - who is a fair, but by no means a particularly good, walker. Here and There Among the Alps (Classic Reprint) by Frederica Plunket Pdf

Excerpt from Here and There Among the Alps These sensational and highly exciting works have, however, one great disadvantage, they check the energies and chill the aspirations of moderate walkers. To 'ladies they are particularly discouraging. How are they to attempt the ascent of the horns or dents, or pointes or spitzes of which they read and hear, if they are beset with such dangers and difficulties? How are they to clamber up precipices, where at each step the treacherous rocks may break beneath their feet '9 How are they to walk on the knife-like edges of snow ridges, where a single false step would be destruction, or to descend the steep ice-s10pe, where a slip is fatal? They feel that to attempt such performances would be absolute madness, risk ing other lives as well as their own, and they lay aside the fascinating volume with a sigh, and regret fully confess that the high Alps are beyond their powers, and that they must content themselves with small expeditions, and mule paths at moderate ele vations.
