Practical Organic Chemistry (Classic Reprint) by Julius Berend Cohen Pdf

Excerpt from Practical Organic Chemistry The present volume is an enlarged edition of that published in 1887, and has been completely rewritten. The preparations have all been carefully revised, some of the former ones omitted and many new ones introduced. The chief additions are the introductory chapters on organic analysis and molecular weight determinations, and an extension of the appendix. The book does not aim at being a complete laboratory guide, but is intended to provide a systematic course of practical in struction, illustrating a great variety of reactions and processes with a very moderate outlay in materials and apparatus. An Introduction to the Study of Organic Chemistry (Classic Reprint) by Hans Clarke Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Organic Chemistry IN the writing of text-books of Organic Chemistry there are two distinct and incompatible systems. In the one, it is the practical aspect of the science which is kept in chief view in the other, its symmetry and homogeneity. The one constantly directs attention to detail the other approaches the subject with the desire of displaying its orderly principles and structural unity. The present writer adheres with conviction to the latter method. The reader of text-books based upon the practical point of view is apt, if he be a beginner, to lose the thread of the argument in the wealth of facts for the mass of information necessary for the proper comprehension of the main principles of organic chemistry is so great, that additional details hinder rather than assist the student in his laborious task of assimilation. Laboratory Manual of Organic Chemistry (Classic Reprint) by Harry Fisher Pdf

Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Organic Chemistry The experiments are, in general, the usual ones found in laboratory manuals, changed of course in accordance with our experience, and they were chosen for their teaching value and for the good all-round practical manipulation involved. There are only a few innovations. Menthone and menthone oxime illustrate typical reactions even though their formulas may seem large to the beginner. Glycocoll is prepared by hydrolysis, thus linking up the chemistry of the proteins with that of simpler compounds. Limonene dihydrochloride has tremendous teaching value and the synthesis of camphor from pinene gives an opportunity for select work in an enticing field. The methods described give good yields in most cases, but the yield was not the prime reason for choosing any experiment. Elementary Practical Chemistry by John Theodore Hewitt Pdf

Excerpt from Elementary Practical Chemistry: Inorganic and Organic This small work on qualitative analysis is intended to supply a text-book for students working according to the syllabus of the elementary stage of Practical Inorganic and Organic Chemistry. The substances for which tests are given are those contained in the new syllabus (1894), but it is hoped that the methods given for their detection and separation are such that the student will have nothing to unlearn when he proceeds to a more advanced course of qualitative analysis. Directions are given in the making up of reagents for students who are working without the aid of a teacher. Objection may be taken by some to the way in which it is recommended that results should be stated, but the authors find after several years practical experience in laboratory teaching, that this method leads to clearness of expression, and the rapid examination of a student's work. Experimental Organic Chemistry (Classic Reprint) by Augustus Price West Pdf

Excerpt from Experimental Organic Chemistry IN several respects this book is somewhat different from similar ones which are in general use at the present time. It is a combina tion of textbook and laboratory manual in which the theoretical discussions and the laboratory experiments are blended together. This arrangement encourages the student to consult the text while he is doing the experiments in the laboratory, with the result that he is more likely to perceive clearly the relation between the theory and the practice. Methods of Organic Analysis (Classic Reprint) by Henry C. Sherman Pdf

Excerpt from Methods of Organic Analysis IN rewriting this work after six years of constant use in the classroom and laboratory, the author has endeavored to keep in mind the needs both of students and of practising chemists. Methods which are commonly used as exercises for beginners (such, for example, as the determination of alcohol by the distillation method) are fully described with detailed explana tory and precautionary notes, while those methods which are apt to be used only by advanced students or professional chemists are given more concisely. At the end of each chapter will be found, first a list of reference books arranged alphabetically by authors, and then a chronological list of journal articles, bulletins, etc., particularly of the last few years. The abbreviations are those used by the American Chemical Society in the publication of Chemical Abstracts. A Laboratory Manual of Chemistry for Beginners by Arnold Frederik Holleman Pdf

Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Chemistry for Beginners: An Appendix to the Author's Text-Book of Organic Chemistry IT is admitted universally that chemistry cannot be learnt by the study of text-books only, and that laboratory practice is essential. A student new to the science derives most benefit from a laboratory course of inorganic preparations, simple quantitative experiments, and qualitative inorganic analysis. He is brought thus into contact with work closely connected with the text-books and lectures on this division of chemistry, and is enabled to understand the subject much better than by any other method. A student beginning the study of organic chemistry usually has to content himself with text-books and lectures, and very seldom has the opportunity of handling the compounds about which he has to read. There is, evidently, therefore, a lack in the methods of teaching the elements of organic chemistry adopted in the Universities. Experimental Organic Chemistry by Augustus Price West Pdf

Excerpt from Experimental Organic Chemistry In several respects this book is somewhat different from similar ones which are in general use at the present time. It is a combination of textbook and laboratory manual in which the theoretical discussions and the laboratory experiments are blended together. This arrangement encourages the student to consult the text while he is doing the experiments in the laboratory, with the result that he is more likely to perceive clearly the relation between the theory and the practice. Only the more important compounds are discussed, and thus the student is not bewildered with a mass of information relating to a large number of compounds of minor importance. Again, experiments which are dangerous or very difficult for a beginner have been purposely omitted. The application of general reactions and the general relations between the different groups of compounds have received special attention; in fact, at frequent intervals review tables are given, showing the relation between the principal members of various groups of compounds. These review tables are very helpful in enabling the student to review at a glance the chemistry of a number of groups of compounds. Special emphasis has been laid upon the exact preparation of organic compounds, as this constitutes the most important feature of a course in organic chemistry. In accordance with this view the directions for performing the experiments have been written in a most precise and accurate manner and will be found unusually free from ambiguous statements; in fact, the student is usually told exactly what to do and how to do it. This method has given excellent results in the University of the Philippines, where it has been necessary to handle laboratory sections of more than one hundred students. It trains a student to follow directions and to rely upon himself rather than an instructor, it enables a teacher to handle large laboratory classes in a satisfactory manner, with the result that accidents and explosions seldom, if ever, occur.
