Short Stories by Jesus by Amy-Jill Levine Pdf

The renowned biblical scholar, author of The Misunderstood Jew, and general editor for The Jewish Annotated New Testament interweaves history and spiritual analysis to explore Jesus’ most popular teaching parables, exposing their misinterpretations and making them lively and relevant for modern readers. Jesus was a skilled storyteller and perceptive teacher who used parables from everyday life to effectively convey his message and meaning. Life in first-century Palestine was very different from our world today, and many traditional interpretations of Jesus’ stories ignore this disparity and have often allowed anti-Semitism and misogyny to color their perspectives. In this wise, entertaining, and educational book, Amy-Jill Levine offers a fresh, timely reinterpretation of Jesus’ narratives. In Short Stories by Jesus, she analyzes these “problems with parables,” taking readers back in time to understand how their original Jewish audience understood them. Levine reveals the parables’ connections to first-century economic and agricultural life, social customs and morality, Jewish scriptures and Roman culture. With this revitalized understanding, she interprets these moving stories for the contemporary reader, showing how the parables are not just about Jesus, but are also about us—and when read rightly, still challenge and provoke us two thousand years later.

The Story of Jesus Participant's Guide by Randy Frazee Pdf

The Story of Jesus small group video Bible study is a seven-week exploration into the life and ministry of Jesus that is adapted from the original The Story Adult Curriculum. Pulled straight from the pages of the Bible, this study provides individuals and groups of all sizes the opportunity to learn, discuss, and apply Jesus’ life, work, and teaching to their everyday lives. Pastor and author Randy Frazee presents seven ten-minute teachings on how the story of Jesus intersects with the story of our modern day lives. To understand the Bible, says author and pastor Randy Frazee, you need bifocal lenses, because two perspectives are involved. The Lower Story, our story, is actually many stories of men and women interacting with God in the daily course of life. The Upper Story is God's story, the tale of his great, overarching purpose that fits all the individual stories together like panels in one unified mural. The Story of Jesus Participant’s Guide includes DVD teaching notes, discussion questions, between session personal experiences, and also includes seven chapters of the full text of The Story hardcover book as it relates to Jesus, from his birth to the beginning of the church. Sessions include: The Birth of the King Jesus' Ministry Begins No Ordinary Man Jesus, the Son of God The Hour of Darkness The Resurrection New Beginnings Designed for use with The Story of Jesus Video Study (sold separately).

What Did Jesus Look Like? by Joan E. Taylor Pdf

Jesus Christ is arguably the most famous man who ever lived. His image adorns countless churches, icons, and paintings. He is the subject of millions of statues, sculptures, devotional objects and works of art. Everyone can conjure an image of Jesus: usually as a handsome, white man with flowing locks and pristine linen robes. But what did Jesus really look like? Is our popular image of Jesus overly westernized and untrue to historical reality? This question continues to fascinate. Leading Christian Origins scholar Joan E. Taylor surveys the historical evidence, and the prevalent image of Jesus in art and culture, to suggest an entirely different vision of this most famous of men. He may even have had short hair.

Jesus Short Stories by Jay Santiago Pdf

Jesus Short Stories is my own effort to shed light on Jesus's parables. As someone who is a regular churchgoer and has spent countless hours studying the Bible, particularly the words of Jesus, it has always perplexed me that seldom do you ever find anyone trying to uncover the hidden meaning behind Jesus's parables. If you spend time reading the gospels, that is exactly what happened in Jesus's time as well. A few years ago, I began seeing Jesus's parables in a new light. First and foremost, these Jesus Short Stories are Christian fiction. I want to stress that they are indeed fiction. However, they are presented in a way that will help the reader to also gain insight on the hidden nature of Jesus's parables. Throughout this book, there is one rule that I have regarding the words of Jesus...under no circumstances ever, do I put words in the mouth of Jesus. But that said, I have found clever ways of shedding light on the hidden mysteries. On a side note, the very first short story is my sincerest effort to reconstruct the lost gospel.
