Lives and Voyages of Drake, Cavendish, and Dampier by Christian Isobel Johnstone Pdf

Excerpt from Lives and Voyages of Drake, Cavendish, and Dampier: Including a View of the History of the Buccaneers This volume is devoted to the lives of three of the most eminent men whom England has at any time sent forth into the field of her most brilliant achieve ments: and the relation of their Voyages, Discover ies, and Adventures, is, to a certain extent, the his tory of her naval power and reputation. If the first aspiring thoughts of British youth are inseparably connected with maritime enterprise, - with the perils and vicissitudes, the novel and romantic incidents, the valour, daring, and heroic endurance, which are displayed in the narratives of the elder voyagers, - this work cannot want interest. From the very nature of the subject, it necessarily contains much curious and valuable instruction drawn from many sources, but in every instance verified by a careful examination of the original authorities. A Pirate Of Exquisite Mind by Diana Preston,Michael Preston Pdf

William Dampier, (1651-1715), was an English adventurer and pirate who preyed on ships on the Spanish Main. Poor and ill-educated and determined to make his fortune, he nonetheless had a passion for exploration and scientific research. Dampier was the first to map the winds and currents of the world's oceans; led the first recorded party of Englishmen to set foot on Australia - 80 years before Cook; wrote about Galapagos wildlife 150 years before Darwin, who drew on Dampier's notes in his own work; was the first travel writer: A NEW VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD was instant bestseller when it was published in 1697 - said to have influenced the novels of Swift and Defoe. A man full of contradictions: he who achieved so much 'blew it' later in life, declining into scandal, failure and even farce. A unique man ahead of his time, he lived a large part of his life among pirates yet managed to preserve what Coleridge called his "exquisite refinement of mind". A classic example of the best narrative history.

A Voyage to New Holland by William Dampier Pdf

William Dampier (1651-1715) was an English buccaneer, sea captain, author and scientific observer. He was the first Englishman to explore or map parts of New Holland (Australia) and New Guinea. He was the first person to circumnavigate the world three times. In the 1670s he crewed with buccaneers on the Spanish Main of Central America, later transferring to Captain Charles Swan's ship, the Cygnet, and setting out across the Pacific to raid the East Indies. After further adventures Dampier returned to England in 1691 via the Cape of Good Hope, penniless but in possession of his journals. The publication of these journals as New Voyage Round the World in 1697 created interest at the British Admiralty and in 1699 Dampier was given the command of HMS Roebuck with a commission to explore Australia and New Guinea. On the return voyage to England, Roebuck foundered near Ascension Island on 21 February 1701 and the crew were marooned there for five weeks before being picked up by an East Indiaman and returned home. He wrote an account of the 1699-1701 expedition entitled A Voyage to New Holland (1703) and a few years later added A Continuation of a Voyage to New Holland (1709).

The Complete Works of William Dampier by William Dampier Pdf

The Complete Works of William Dampier: Containing Particular Descriptions of Life in the Torrid Zone at the Dawn of Modern Science and at the Intersection of the Golden Age of Sail, the Golden Age of Exploration, and the Golden Age of Piracy THE PIRATE-SCIENTIST WILLIAM DAMPIER (1651-1715) lived at a remarkable time in human history: at the dawn of modern science and at the intersection of three golden ages: the golden ages of sail, exploration, and piracy. Curious to see the world and keen to add to the world's sum total of useful knowledge, he ventured out upon the high seas. He kept a careful account of his adventures in the world's Torrid Zone, describing as he went the soil, rivers, harbours, tides, currents, winds, plants, fruits and animals of the lands he visited, together with the inhabitants, their customs, religion, government and trade. WILLIAM DAMPIER sailed the great southern Pacific ocean four times, was the third Englishman to circumnavigate the globe, was the first person to circumnavigate the globe three times, was the first person to visit six continents, captained England's first scientific expedition, and touched Australian shores nearly 100 years before Captain James Cook. His writing immediately made him famous throughout Europe and impacted England's great poets and writers: Lord Byron, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Daniel Defoe, and Jonathan Swift. His scientific efforts influenced the work of Charles Darwin, Alexander von Humboldt, Edmund Halley, and Matthew Flinders. His writing inspired the English to challenge the Spanish and Dutch dominance in the South Seas. He wrote of free trade a century before Adam Smith. He introduced important new words to the English language, words like: banana, barbeque, castaway, sea-breeze, and subspecies. He was once left for dead by a crew of vicious mutineers, but survived against all odds. Dampier was a poor pirate, but precisely because he was a pirate he was able to travel the world and discover true and lasting treasure: hard and useful foundational knowledge in the realms of science, natural history, economics and political economy, hydrography, botany, zoology, ethnography, anthropology, navigation, geography, map-making, literature, and language.
