Excerpt from The Wealth and Biography of the Wealthy Citizens of the City of New York: Being an Alphabetical Arrangement of the Names of the Most Prominent Capitalists To render this publication more interesting to the general reader, we have procured from various authentic sources, brief genealogical and historical or biographical notices of some of the more remarkable men and families in this community, into whose hands wealth has concentrated. We have endeavored to do equal and exact justice to the parties, and have deemed that we have been rendering an especial service to those, more particularly, who by honest and laborious industry have raised themselves from the obscure and humble walks of life, to great wealth and consideration. If there be, by any possibility, any erroneous statements, we pledge ourselves to correct them in our next edition. Our aim has been to wound the feelings of no one, but to do strict justice to all, and to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. This edition has been carefully revised, and almost every biographical notice entirely re written so as to remove whatever errors and objectionable remarks had crept into the former editions. It has been found necessary to exclude several names, while new names to the amount of nearly one-third the whole number in the book have been added to this edition. There has been added also a large quantity of interesting biographical and historical matter, as derived from the consultation of books and living authorities; so that the work may now be regarded as complete and accurate as its nature and scope admits. Duncan Phyfe by Peter M. Kenny,Duncan Phyfe,Michael Kevin Brown Pdf

"Duncan Phyfe (1770-1854), known during his lifetime as the "United States Rage," to this day remains America's best-known cabinetmaker. Establishing his reputation as a purveyor of luxury by designing high-quality furniture for New York's moneyed elite, Phyfe would come to count among his clients some of the nation's wealthiest and most storied families. This richly illustrated volume covers the full chronological sweep of the craftsman's distinguished career, from his earliest furniture-- which bears the influence of his 18th-century British predecessors Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Hope--to his late simplified designs in the Grecian Plain. More than sixty works by Phyfe and his workshop are highlighted, including rarely seen pieces from private collections and several newly discovered documented works. Additionally, essays by leading scholars bring to light new information on Phyfe's life, his workshop production, and his roster of illustrious patrons. What unfolds is the story of Phyfe's remarkable transformation from a young immigrant craftsman to an accomplished master cabinetmaker and an American icon."--Publisher's website.
