The Infinite Thread by Alexandra Kennedy Pdf

The loss we feel when a loved one dies is profound, often accompanied by regret for all that we didn’t say or do. Such regret can hinder emotional growth and create wounds that affect all other aspects of our lives. But loss doesn’t necessarily mean the end of a connection with a loved one. In fact, it can open the doors to a unique relationship that offers intimacy, healing, and renewal. In The Infinite Thread, author Alexandra Kennedy helps us deal with loss in a powerful new way: by using active imagination, letters, and inner dialogue to re-create and heal past relationships. In doing so, we also amend the often-strained ties with those still living. The Infinite Thread strips away the veils of mystery surrounding death and transcends preconceptions about death and dying. Rich with opportunities for reflection, it brings enormous comfort to anyone who has ever lost a loved one or been faced with their own mortality.

Benefit from unobtrusive contexts: Towards the recognition of short and non-periodic activities by Andreas Jahn Pdf

Context-aware systems can be used in a multitude of scenarios and applications. Examples include a pedestrian safety system which can help to detect a potential upcoming accident based on the knowledge of the pedestrian’s activity. In the field of human activity recognition, a majority of research focuses on long-lasting and continuous activities, such as walking or attending a dinner. Yet, the recognition of short and non-periodic activities, such as stepping onto the road, is still poorly understood. Due to the non-periodic nature, missing or incorrect recognitions of such activities imply that the entire activity is not recognized and remains unknown. This thesis focuses on short and non-periodic activities, gives a definition and investigates three challenges in their recognition: inconsistent sensor data, overrepresentation of periodic activities and evaluation of the recognition. For each challenge a possible solution is proposed. It is shown that applying these solutions addresses the challenges and improves the recognition rates of short and non-periodic activities up to 20%.

Meaning in Life by Joel Vos Pdf

This inspiring, insightful new text provides a practical guide to helping clients live a meaningful and satisfying life despite the challenges they may be facing. Divided into three parts, it starts by drawing on empirical research to demonstrate the effectiveness of meaning-oriented practice and reviews a large body of literature on meaning in a wide-range of psychological and philosophical approaches, translating this into specific recommendations for practitioners. It continues by exploring the basic skill set required for working effectively in this area – from how to assess clients' needs and address issues of meaning, to specific existential, phenomenological and mindfulness skills. Finally, it provides a step guide to applying the skills to clinical practice with the support of examples and case studies from a range of professions. In what is still an emerging area of practice, this text stands alone as a comprehensive source of reference for both students and practitioners across the full range of people professions.

The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins Pdf

The million copy international bestseller, critically acclaimed and translated into over 25 languages. As influential today as when it was first published, The Selfish Gene has become a classic exposition of evolutionary thought. Professor Dawkins articulates a gene's eye view of evolution - a view giving centre stage to these persistent units of information, and in which organisms can be seen as vehicles for their replication. This imaginative, powerful, and stylistically brilliant work not only brought the insights of Neo-Darwinism to a wide audience, but galvanized the biology community, generating much debate and stimulating whole new areas of research. Forty years later, its insights remain as relevant today as on the day it was published. This 40th anniversary edition includes a new epilogue from the author discussing the continuing relevance of these ideas in evolutionary biology today, as well as the original prefaces and foreword, and extracts from early reviews. Oxford Landmark Science books are 'must-read' classics of modern science writing which have crystallized big ideas, and shaped the way we think.

Pulling the Right Threads by Laura Zimmer-Tamakoshi,Jeanette Dickerson-Putman Pdf

A tribute to Jane C. Goodale, Pulling the Right Threads discusses the vibrant ethnographer and teacher's principles for mentoring, collaborating, and performing fieldwork. Known for her ethnographic research in the Pacific, development of the Association of Social Anthropology in Oceania, and influence in the anthropology department at Bryn Mawr College, Goodale and other contributors renew the debate in anthropology over the authenticity of field data and representations of other cultures. Together, they take aim at those who claim ethnography is outmoded or false.
